For those of you who have heard me say this 100 times before, just scroll on down...Ron Grainer's score for "The Omega Man" is very, VERY "Seventies", complete with the guitar riffs and trombone solos.
The main theme is exquisite, and worth the price of the CD. There are also several other beautiful cues in this soundtrack, which will make a much better stand-alone listen than as a film score.
What I hold against the music is that too often it causes the movie to be unintentionally funny.
During the last scene, as Heston is dying in a pool of his own blood, the music breaks out into a seventies "samba" thang...the only thing missing is Lawrence Welk saying, "Let's all dance!"
I'll buy the CD, because there's some excellent music in that score...but I'll also be giggling in several places...

So quit knocking it. Besides, the reason Grainer got funky when Neville bloodied up the fountain is obvious. It's because Neville would have wanted it that way. So quit griping and LET'S SAMBA!

dantoris: status on the remake: Not happening any time soon, from the look. Schwarzenegger was connected, but he's doing TRUE LIES 2 at present instead (and most certainly and obviously will not be doing PLANET OF THE APES -- hmmm, he keeps meaning to follow in Heston's footsteps ... and Heston played his boss in TRUE LIES as well ... a pattern here? You have to wonder.)Ridley Scott was going to make THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, possibly even with Ah-nuld, but it doesn't look like a go anymore. File this one under "ten years later some so-called wunderkind will get around to it." Hell, look at the variety of directors attached to TOTAL RECALL, and the amazing number of versions of that script that were written ... (David Cronenberg's TOTAL RECALL, what a scary-ass concept ... I haven't seen exIsTenz [however the hell the capitalization goes], but it sounds rather like some of the stuff he probably wanted to do with TOTAL RECALL.)

EXCERPT FROM *IN THE ARENA* BY CHARLTON HESTON:From the beginning, our director, Boris Sagal, was at odds with Russ, though it was hard to see why. Certainly we were getting fine footage, and no one could fault Russ's pace. Perhaps Boris felt threatened by his cameraman's reputation.
In truth, Boris had a volatile disposition, given to spectacular displays of anger when roused. This is a bad idea. Everyone gets angry, but the higher up the chain you are, the less you should show it. The director, never. You can correct, rebuke, reprimand, even excoriate, but you should never raise your voice. It diminishes the control of the company a director needs. Boris didn't understand this.
Some years later Boris was coming back from a day's helicopter shooting on his current film. They landed while he was angrily reviewing the day's work with his cameraman. Boris stepped down from the chopper, turned brusquely away---and walked into the tail rotor blade. As far as I know, he's the only member of the Directors Guild ever killed in the line of duty.

The film in question was the TV miniseries WORLD WAR III, completed by David Greene. Sagal's last complete work was the excellent miniseries MASADA. He also made the Roddy McDowall segment for the original telefilm of NIGHT GALLERY; the director of the third (and I think best) segment with Richard Kiley, named Barry Shear, who also made the terrific (says me) WILD IN THE STREETS, also died prematurely. The only director of this film still with us is the fellow who helmed segment #2 with Joan Crawford, a kid named Steven Spielberg. And even he isn't doing too well these days (poor fellow's down to a single kidney).

http://www.ew.com/ew/features/archive/guilty_pleasures/charlton_heston.html MARY KAY SCHILLING ON CHUCK HESTON: "the glinty-eyed, impossibly toothy grimace used to express each and every emotion; the staccato delivery, no matter the sentiment conveyed; the curiously girlyman run; his continuing (and quite touching) proclivity for topless scenes, despite the hard-to-miss love handles."

Well, I was going to add something to this thread, but it has veered uncontrolably off-topic.Let's just say I ordered the CD, my eyes didn't well-up with tears, but my heart beat quicked and rate of breathing increased.
I'm looking forward to the video release of "MYSTERY ALASKA" so that more voices will be added to mine for the release of this soundtrack.

ROCCO!To my (limited) knowledge, YOU are the first and ONLY person EVER to speak of "Wild In The Streets" at any film score message board that I have been involved with!
That's some kind of honor in itself (isn't it?).
"WILD IN THE STREETS"!
"14 OR FIGHT!"I LOVE THIS FLICK! I played the LP soundtrack until it was smooth as a china plate...too bad. I might've made some BIG BUCKS if I had never unwrapped it.
Is this film available on Home Video?
OR do we have to wait until AMC gets around to showing it (they've been ever-so-slowly releasing the old AIP films)?posted 04-06-2000 09:20 PM PT (US)

Timmer:"Mystery Alaska" was a Russell Crow movie released last year (late summer or early fall, I think). It was about a group of week-end hockey playing guys from a small town in Alaska who play the New York Rangers.
It's kind of like a hockey-themed "Rocky."
The movie has a "Northern Exposure" feel to it as well, with eccentric characters as well as "plain good folks" populating the town. I loved the movie. Most critics panned it. The public stayed away in droves.
The movie begins with some spectacular Alaskan winter scenery and a guy skating on a frozen river to Carter Burwell's main theme, which is best described as "Last of the Mohicans" meets "Rudy."
The rest of the score is equally compelling, accurately portraying the inner emotions of a wonderful cast of characters.
I've been lobbying for a soundtrack release since I saw it in October. When this comes out on video -- I want all of you to watch it and hear for yourselves how great this score is.
If I'm not mistaken, Chris is the only other Board member who has taken up this call. I hope the rest will join in when you get a chance to hear it.

Marc is correct in his pursuit of this music. The FIRST thing I noticed in the movie besides the fabulous scenery was the rousing, rocking music. It is, of course, a feel good, Rocky twin movie with a wonderful, feel good sound track. I too look forward to its release. PLEASE!

I'm pretty sure WILD IN THE STREETS is out of print. Copies show up on e-Bay, but they go for $30 to $40 -- as does the soundtrack LP. (Even Pauline Kael liked this one. Well, sort of: "This blatant, insensitive, crummy-looking American International Pictures movie is entertaining in a lot of ways that more tasteful movies aren't.")

SILENT RUNNING is by Peter Schickele. Schickele also wrote a psychedelic masterpiece called THE FANTASTIC GARDEN. It's on a record called THREE VIEWS FROM THE OPEN WINDOW. If you live near a large record library, you might find it there. If you like hypnotic music, you'll like THE FANTASTIC GARDEN.

Schickele also has won at least two Grammys for his comedy-classical albums under the name "PDQ Bach." Splendid fellow, used to live in my neighborhood, made two amateur films at his former house.SILENT RUNNING is a good guess for the next FSM album. I'd shoot for TRON, but recognize that is probably not realistic.

http://www.wendycarlos.com/news.html#baketapeTRON was recorded on defective tapes. But those tapes were eventually salvaged. The tapes had to be dried out with a dehydrator. Wendy Carlos says: "You can expect CDs of essentially all the older music, including TRON, once contractual arrangements are made."

When did Wendy Carlos say this? TRON was scheduled for CD release several years ago. (I'm not arguing she did say this, although I don't know the quote ... just wondering how much longer we gotta wait.)

I'm going to bring this thread back on topic, since I spent about 10 minutes searching the archives, and this is the only Omega thread I could find using my patented manual search method.Anywho... I finally picked up The Omega Man and I love it. The sound clips at FSM had caught my attention, and I'm so glad I picked this one up.
I'd heard some really nasty comments about this one, but I have no clue what they were talking about. Like Chris said a year ago, it's got a fantastic main theme and some other great stuff. I really wish I hadn't waited a year to pick this one up!

Man, more than a year has already gone by ... and no SILENT RUNNING, much less TRON.Chris, did you ever find WILD IN THE STREETS? I think the original video was released by Vestron, but don't own a copy myself.
Still snubbing the wood-fired chicken,
H.
P.S. Given all the stuff written here about Boris Sagal, I now wonder where the recently elusive "Boris" picked his tag ...

Boy, it takes more than a year for jonathan to get this thread back on track and "H" takes an immediate 180 onto a different subject. Not complaining, just observing. Is there something about "Omega Man" that inspires this shift? Have other threads seen similar hi-jackings? Have I just continued this inexpicable switching of subject?
