ok. this is a very silly topic but I kinda wanted to get some feedback anyway. Have any of you ever noticed that John Williams always wears the same thing? When he is not in a tuxedo he is always wearing a black turtleneck. I can somewhat understand this. I mean. I love to wear black turtlenscks - they are my personal favorite article of clothing (and not because its what Williams wears - i just think that I look reaaly good in them) But I am hard pressed to find pictures of him in anything else. I know this is a really superficial thing to be bringing up but I was just kind of musing over the fact. any thoughts?

You know, subconsciously, this is something I've wondered about, too. Honestly, I really don't care about what Williams wears, but in every single picture I've seen him in, it's like what you said, Cole - either the tuxedo or the black turtleneck. It's like he's a cartoon character with an endless supply of the same threads![This message has been edited by Rang (edited 04 April 2000).]

The turtlenecks are very comfortable to conduct in, I guess. He's also usually dressed with dark pants. Never jeans, which is what Goldsmith frequently wears (despite his age).I've also noticed that a lot, if not most, film composers wear blazers and a simple shirt underneath. Is it just me, or? And does it really matter?

I've always thought that he wears this so that he is easily recognizable up on the podium during a scoring session.I think this because the only time you every see a picture of Williams is when he is at a special social event or at a scoring session. I don't think I've every seen a picture of him just walking down the street.

Maybe he's only got one jersey. So have I.

The first time I ever saw Jerry Goldsmith was on an extra interview, and I taped it, about scoring CONGO, that's when I first saw the pony tail, and he was wearing a Snoopy shirt.NP. SUPERMAN*****

Cole,
I have a picture with me and Williams. Williams is wearing a dark brown polo shirt. In fact, I have never seen him here in LA with a turtelneck.

Well, on this subject, conductors/composers where what is most comfortable to them. Williams has indeed worn turtlenecks, but I have seen him numerous occaions wearing different types of clothes. In regards to tuxedos, who ever wears 70 tuxes? All conductors I am familiar with have one tux. That's all they need! I have one tux and that is good for all my conducting gigs. So, the tux statement is kind of ridiculous!Well, those are my thoughts. I won't rag on Cole, because I like him to much!

I've noticed that John Scott ALWAYS wears a WHITE tux ... whether conducting orchestras (at least according to the few stills I've seen) or just going out to functions -- including the Goldsmith SPFM tribute in '93 (I got to hang out with him for a while, actually, and he's a really sweet guy. I wished I had something for him to sign, but maybe he was just as happy not to be mobbed with autograph-hunters, although he got more attention -- since it wasn't "HIS" night -- than I suspect he expected. As true a gentleman as he is a fine composer.)NP: THEMES by Vangelis (heh, who knows what he dresses like, does he ever leave the studio?)
