    After listening to and watching the Metallica/Michael Kamen collaboration for the umpteenth time, I've become interested in finding out what movies Kamen has scored for. So, what are some of his most acclaimed film scores?

    Hey Alwin-

    I'd definitely recommend the following:

    Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
    The Highlander
    License to Kill
    101 Dalmations

    I haven't heard his score to Brazil, but I've heard only good things about it. Actually, I'd recommend every Kamen score I own - that includes Don Juan DeMarco, What Dreams May Come, Mr. Holland's Opus, The Three Musketeers, Hudson Hawk, and The Iron Giant. I haven't heard a bad Kamen score yet, and I'm definitely looking forward to X-Men.

    That's a tough question, Alwin.

    Kamen has done so much, and is extremely versatile and adaptable.

    An excellent sampler of some his more subdued scores is to be found on the MICHAEL KAMEN SOUNDTRACK ALBUM. Among his action scores, which he also does brilliantly, I'd recommend ROBIN HOOD, DIE HARD/LETHAL WEAPON-franchise and HIGHLANDER (just to mention but a few).

    I highly recommend his IRON GIANT score, but I also recommend that you hear it in the movie first to hear how well it works. It's fantastic.

    The only Kamen scores I can recommend (and of them I only own the first) are Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and the Lethal Weapon trilogy. (I saw trilogy because I refuse to accept number four as an installment of the franchise because it's soooooooo very bad). Die Hard 2 and 3 have their moments (the third more so than the second), but the first is very lackluster, except for a few key moments.

    I really dig(like)The Winter Guest. Beautiful horn writing! Robin Hood is always great and Iron Giant is very hip too!

    THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN is my favorite -- absolutely awe-inspiring, gorgeous orchestral and choral work. A nice long album too, having been recorded in Munich (no re-use, though Kamen was angry about the situation for years afterwards, thinking that such an expensive movie should certainly have paid for a more experienced orchestra. Though the problem was, the movie was so far over budget already, that's why the producers wanted to keep SOME kind of cost down. Kamen and director Terry Gilliam have made up, however.)

    I also think the album "Mr. Kamen's Opus" is a very solid introduction to certain of his themes that might not be worth buying entire other soundtracks just to get. DON JUAN DE MARCO has some lovely stuff as well.

    Producer Joel Silver's two favorite composers during his action-movie height in the 1980s and early 90s were Alan Silvestri and Michael Kamen. Kamen recalled how Silver said to him during the scoring of LAST BOY SCOUT -- having just heard Kamen's BARON MUNCHAUSEN -- "You know, you write really beautiful melodies. How come you never give me a melody?" Kamen replied, "How do I write a melody for some guy getting his nose punched through the back of his head?" And Silver said "THAT'S WHAT I MEAN! Give me a melody for THE SOUND OF A GUY GETTING HIS NOSE PUNCHED THROUGH THE BACK OF HIS HEAD!" I'm not sure Kamen quite managed that, though one of his very best scores, the original DIE HARD, was for Mr. Silver. (And I don't relate that story to make fun of him, I don't know Joel Silver personally, but as Hollywood types go, he seems pretty likable, seems to have a sense of humor about himself, and his output isn't as overall terrible as some guys I could mention ... hey, most of you loved THE MATRIX.)

    I adore Kamen's main title/end title theme for one of his earlier jobs, VENOM (1982, Klaus Kinski and Nicol Williamson vs. a giant snake which winds up crawling up Oliver Reed's trousers -- hmmm, this all makes it sound more fun than it actually is), and I've never ever ever found anyone who either has that melody or has even heard of one existing in ANY form apart from the film. I even have studio tapes of VENOM, and the only reason I wanted them was for that main title. No dice. My source laughed, "Maybe Mike didn't write it." But I'm sure he did, it's too quintessentially a Kamen tune.

    I would have to say that Kamen is definitely not one of my favorite composers. I will elaborate if necessarily, but his scores lack that special something (?). True, Robin Hood and Three Musketeers are really good, especially the former, but it`s too bad some of the best music from the films is missing from both the albums. I am looking forward to what he does with the X-men (though with a degree of dread).
    Hey, why aren`t there any expanded boots of his work?

    NP-The Mummy complete *****/***** (Imagine what Goldsmith could have done with Robin Hood!)

    The following scores are hard to track down, and they're comedy scores, but good ones:

    NOTHING BUT TROUBLE(clearly the only entertaining aspect of that film)
    SPLITTING HEIRS(an enjoyable work that remains unreleased; fairly inexplicable considering it was recorded in London)

    The Nothing but Trouble album only had one cue by Kamen, and not very interesting at that. I remember some decent enough music in the film though.

    I can't believe no one has mentioned The Dead Zone -- a terrific, suspenseful score. Highlander is wonderful also, probably the best I've heard from Kamen. I found Die Hard (from the 1st film, only available as a boot) disappointing, relying too heavily on overly familiar source music. I'm not sure that was Kamen's fault, though. In any event, Michael Kamen is an inventive, talented composer, underappreciated by the Goldsmith/Williams- addicted hordes.

    I agree with most of the above, but i would like to see an expanded Robin Hood. Too much of the last half of the movie is left off.
