Great article, Aaron. I hope to have you score one of my pics in the near future. The link should still take people directly to the article. Usually only the front pages change, while the actual article remains save in its own link.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the comments. I will be releasing a cd soon and I have just made a deal with Roland keyboards and Hector Olivera or Marco Mendez will be performing a whole cd of my music on the brand new Roland Organ. So I am excited about that! My final performance with this band is Sunday. If you want to, send your home address to acollins@bv.net and I will try to send you a copy of the actual performance on video! But, tapes do get expensive, so.... (I will let you fill in the rest) Well, off to the studio! Thanks,
AaronBTW Scott: sending the package to you(the video and book)

Hey Aaron--this is great. Way to go! If you're ever in the Tampa Bay area be sure to post a message and we'll meet at a conveniently located pub for some good grog & film music talk. The drinks're on me.--Oops, you're not of age; make that a cup of java at Barnes & Nobles or Einstein Bagels or whatever. This is great. Nothing like being on the ground-floor with a rising star.
PS

Let me add to the pile of congrats. But I'm curious:
Do any of the performers of your music react to your age in either a negative or positive manner? Judging from the picture, most of the performers are 40+. Are they in awe of your talent or do they feel uncomfortable performing under the baton of a high school "brat"? What do they think of your music?

Thor:Hey, great questions! Actually, this particular group is a group I have performed with numerous occasions on the horn. I have developed a great rapport with these musicians. So, in this case, they were great to work with and felt very comfortable playing under my baton. They all loved this piece, and actually it sounds more like a "film" piece, rather than a wind ensemble" piece! They have played my music a number of times and support me very much!
My first time rehearsing a proffessional group was uneasy at first, but began to flow great as the piece got better under their fingers. They are more in awe than thinking "why is this high school 'brat' up there waving his arms."
I hope I answered your questions, and any more feel free to post them or email me at acollins@bv.net or catch me on Aol IM at shaggenman.
Thanks,

I see, Aaron. Because I know from experience (although in another area) that it is difficult for adult, academically educated people to accept the fact that a teenage mind can create something better than what they themselves are capable of (relative-wise). They often forget that the INTUITIVE, UNTAUNTED "gut feeling" of a youngster (lacking all the formalities and theories that tend to brainwash the student mind on univeristy level - believe me, I know what I'm talking about) can actually be an ADVANTAGE and ASSETT in certain respects.Once again, I can only speak for myself. I was a mere 10/11 years old when I first discovered film music back in the mid 80's. No one, not even my parents, really understood how a child as young as that could grasp the intricate complexity of a film score (bordering on contemporary classical music) and how it appealed to me, when everyone else was listening to Glen Medeiros and Kiss or whatever (or even children's records). I can't explain it. I just know that some musical minds (including yours and to a certain extent mine) mature earlier than others (need I mention Wolfgang?). And that's great.

This "early music awareness" business interests me, for it was Herrmann's work (on Twilight Zone in particular) that hit my film music radar screen at a very early age. REAL early.

I was six years old when PLANET OF THE APES caught my attention, though I didn't quite understand how or why. Picked up STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS at age nine, and we were off and running from there ...

Congrats Aaron! For me it was Mancini (on 8-track of course) at the tender age of 12. My Fair Lady, 1776 and Oklahoma followed shortly thereafter!

I never even thought about film music at that time, but I taped the end credits of "Lord of the Rings" when I was about 13 or so and listened to stuff like Guns'n'Roses and Metallica. LOTR is one of my very favourite scores now, so I guess it was a case of "early subconsius music awareness".
