Hey! After a VERY long day, I have finally finished isolating the score from the 1941 DVD. Unlike the 77-min. bootleg, I have included all that great Swing music. (Also, several of the track-titles on that release were erroneous, and it wasn't the COMPLETE complete score.) I also added a few concert presentations for a total of 113 minutes on two CDs! The film-version of the End Title contains the cannons. The Ferris Wheel calliope music did require some equalizing, and it was worth it! Here's my track list. Most of the cue titles were taken from the DVD chapter list, but a few are my own.

    DISC ONE (57:30)
    1. Main Titles: To Defend Their Homeland... (1:28)
    2. The Northern California Coast/Something Honorable to Destroy/The Dancing Dishwasher (7:06)
    3. The Boogie-Woogie Suit ("Jingle Bells")* (1:27)
    4. War Nerves/A State of Insanity (2:28)
    5. Planes on the Brain (1:09)
    6. B-17 Pick-Up Line (0:42)
    7. The Douglas Home* (0:35)
    8. Mr. Douglas on the Prowl (0:57)
    9. For the Civil Defense (2:56)
    10. Sitarski's Manners/The Landing Party/Hollis "Holly" Wood (5:09)
    11. The Ace of the Air/Prisoner of the Axis (2:20)
    12. The Acrophobe and the Idiot (2:18)
    13. Dishonorable Discharges/Message from the Madman (3:51)
    14. Hollywood Nights* (5:43)
    15. "Down by the Ohio"* (2:24)
    16. "Down by the Ohio"* (reprise) (1:33)
    17. "Daddy"* (1:06)
    19. "Swing, Swing, Swing"*
    20. The Battle for Hollywood (concert version) (5:03)
    21. End Titles (March from 1941) (film version) (4:06)

    DISC TWO (54:40)
    1. March from 1941 (concert version) (4:14)
    2. The Big Brawl (1:18)
    3. Madman Maddox/Pandemonium/The Suicide Mission (4:12)
    4. Wild Bill Comes to Barstow/To Hollywood and Glory! (3:38)
    5. Riot Outside the U.S.O. (1:19)
    6. A Memorable Occasion* (1:39)
    7. Invasion! (1:14)
    8. Hellcats Over Hollywood (3:07)
    9. This Is War! (2:42)
    10. The Invasion of Ocean Park (1:42)
    11. Betty Besieged (1:50)
    12. Get That Sub!/We're Sinking a Sub Tonight!/Right in Their Sights (6:03)
    13. The Long Way to Ocean Park/Ward Takes His Shot/Sitarski's Sayanora (4:21)
    14. Ward's Last Shot (0:57)
    15. Trapped Like Beavers!/The Ferris Wheel/A Long Roll off a Short Pier (4:01)
    16. The Tank and the Torpedo/Wild Bill Kelso vs. Japan (5:47)
    17. End Cast/End Titles (March from 1941) (6:12)

Other than the march, I don't remember too much about this movie (though Dan Aykroyd shouting, "I'm a bug! I'm a bug!" is etched in my memory for eternity), but is this score really worth having, especially in its entirety?

John Williams is my Favorite so I'm going to be biased and say yes. I don't like the original release on BAY CITIES label (now available on VARESE) because of the sound effects on some tracks. So I took it upon myself to make my own version I would like. If you aren't sure buy the Varese version, it has mostly the main themes.

John Williams joins Jerry Goldsmith, Akira Ifukube, Bernard Herrmann, Christopher Young, Masaru Sato and (perhaps) Carter Burwell and Elliot Goldenthal, on my short list of composers about whom I can assert, "Yes, I want every note. Every single note." (I think I respect Goldenthal's work more than I like it. While Burwell works so steadily these days that he no longer feels like such a rare and special treat, though when he's on top of his game, few composers are more fun. He's been robbed of Oscar nominations (not to mention actual awards!) at least five times, for MILLER'S CROSSING, RAISING ARIZONA, FARGO, ROB ROY and CONSPIRACY THEORY. The Academy should only be publicly stoned. By rocks, I mean.)

Wedge, you're really frightening me. How on earth are you doing all this? What are your limits? Could you conceivably you run off, say, a complete PAPILLON? That's on DVD now, ya know, though without isolated score ... not that I'm asking you to do it just for my sake or anything ... no, really, I'd never never never never never ask for something like that ... why would I ... right ... ?

    NP: PAPILLON (coincidence?????????????????)

Well, Mr. Rocco, that would depend. It's been a while since I've seen Papillion ... if there are chunks of score that can be edited around, I'd LOVE to do it. But I fear you may be overestimating my "powers."

Basically, I can put any audio -- from VCR to cassette to DVD -- onto my computer. Once there, I can cut it up, put it back together, or otherwise distort it. Then I can burn it. Would Papillion benefit from this treatment? I'll watch for it, and we'll see, 'cause that's definitely a score that's worth the effort.

As for the quality of 1941 -- I'll be honest: it's not in Williams' top five. Nonetheless, the maestro is in top form. It's a highly creative and energetic score, featuring one of the best marches of all time. It's peppered with fantastic Swing and Big-Band tunes, and the longer, more spread-out presentation really gives the music room to breath. *I* think it's great.

    Rocco,
Are you deliberately leaving out Being John Malkovich from that Burwell Oscar list?

I haven't seen that picture, although I have the album. It doesn't do much for me as an album -- when I hear it with the picture, perhaps it'll mean more to me.

NP: CONTRACT ON CHERRY STREET (Goldsmith, just an excerpt I downloaded -- nice, kind of foreshadows CAPRICORN ONE)
