I got to wondering how many in this forum have ever heard or seen "Altered States?"IMHO it's one of the most important scores of the last 20+ years and given John Corigliano Oscar win for THE RED VIOLIN, it made me wonder how many of the younger fans (I'm 39) might not have been exposed to this earlier effort by Mr. Corigliano
If you haven't, I'd strongly suggest you put it on your list.
If you love the work of Christopher Young or Elliot Goldenthal, this one will blow your socks off.
Any opinions?

ALTERED STATES is a knockout, both score and film. I saw/heard it in college, and I adore it to this day. And, yes, the music is an obvious influence on such subsequent worthies as Elliot Goldenthal and Christopher Young.Who won Best Score that year? Michael Gore for FAME.

Yeah, asides from Corigliano's ALTERED STATES nominees included John Williams for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and John Morris for THE ELEPHANT MAN, all worthy scores, every one of them deserving, and who picked up the statue for best original score? Michel Gore for FAME! The only movie that HAD no score. I can understand FAME's song nominations, but best original SCORE? Here was the Academy's music taste clearly at an all time low.

Nicolai, thanks for the bad memories. I listened to Altered States just a few days ago and am even more impressed by it today than when I first heard it. And yes, Ford, I was there in the theatre when it first came out. Disappointing film but Corrigliano's score is a jewel. There are so many wonderful scores from the last 25 years that noone mentions either because they've never heard them or they simply can't connect with them. Among them The Elephant Man, Altered States, Under The Volcano, Cross Creek, Iceman, Eye of The Needle, GreyStoke, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Return To Oz, The Final Countdown, Quest for Fire, Ghost Story, Old Gringo, Man on Fire, Dragonslayer, Lifeforce, and about half a dozen more. There is fertile territory for these "Have you Heard?" threads.

Oh yes. Altered States. Yummy score, but I found the movie a little too pretentious. A little too existential for my tastes.

I love the Altered States score. Has some really great creepy music in it. I put some of the tracks on my Halloween music compilation disc that I play at (of course) Halloween for all the trick-or-treaters.

Yes, Altered States is a singular score, and comes from that fertile period when scores dared to be complex. Hal2000 -- the scores you listed were all favorites of mine, especially Elephant Man, Under the Volcano, Dragonslayer, Return to Oz, Ghost Story, Lifeforce. I've been out of soundtrack collecting since the 80's, and I wonder whether my taste has changed, or whether what I loved about film music is no longer there.

David,Even if you can't get into today's scores (Although both Red Violin and American Beauty are both excellent places to start up again) there are more pre 1985 scores available than ever before, including ones that I will bet you never thought that you would see.
