    Yes, Phil Collins won *sigh*

And what the hell did they do to Blame Canada??? Robin Williams sung a completely butchered version. Still, was it only me, or did the song get the greatest applause? If you ask me, the songs is miles ahead of the other nominees...

When Best Sound Effects Editing went to The Matrix (I'd have chosen Fight Club, I think for Fincher music and sound are 50% of his movies), they played the fighting scene from the film. But you only heard the music, they didn't play the sound fx!

I hate the oscars, they always pick the wrong people, Caine, no way, Cruise was much much better, his role in Magnolia was out standing, Caine was Caine, Damn the academy, Pil Collins was nothing either...a double Damn you for the oscars!

John Corigliano (sp?) for The Red Violin (which I have not heard).

I'm going to sleep now - it's 6 o'clock in the morning! Why can't they put the Original Score award at the beginning of the show??

ARGH! Can't believe Williams didn't win. At least Phil Collins got it for "Tarzan." I can't believe Cruise was even nominated. I like him, but Caine was the best of the bunch.

Was that the shotest "In Memorium" segment ever? There were more people than they showed. Where was Gene Siskel, Clayton Moore? Charles Gray?

And for those of you who knew who she was, I think they should have included the multi-talented Mary Kay Bergman.

Any others you knew of that were left out?

I'd admit, Kevin Spacey was great in this film. Then again, he's great in every film he's been in, no matter how bad they are. A couple more come to mind, but at the risk of being lynched, I'll keep come saying them.

The best part of the show for me, however, was watching Faith Hill. Man oh man! What a hottie!!!!

The screenplay nominations always bother me. They don't actually READ the shooting script, but just seem to judge the screenplay by what is filmed. The American Beauty screenplay is NOT very good. What was left in and filmed is superior.

Check the screenplay for all thouse court room scenes that yes, WERE shot, but would have totally screwed up the film. These court room bits were part of the "bookeneds" and you'll find the opening and end of the script are actually quite different.

Best screenplay to me (and screenplay as in "yes I read it and it was outstanding even on the page!") was Magnolia. And adapted, Green Mile.

    My thoughts on the Oscars:

Best Actress Hilary Swank: I have nothing against her, it's just that it really caught me by surprise, what with Annette Bening being the front runner.

Best Original Score - The Red Violin by John Corigliano (sp?): Once again, no beef, but then again, I really had no connection to this year's scores, not like last year(GOLDSMITH WAS ROBBED!! THEY STOLE IT RIGHT FROM UNDER HIS NOSE!! LOUSY S.O.B.s)
Anyway, it's amazing that he has only scored three films in his life, and he has an award. Good for him, and he sounded fairly humble in his acceptance speech.

NP - Batman ("Kitchen, Surgery, Face-Off")

    THE OSCAR TO JOHN CORIGLIANO!!!!!
It was the most wonderfull news i've heard for a long time!It was the best score award for years.I can't believe all the things i read in this topic guys!I mean, is it a point when you say that you are surprised that Corigliano took the oscar with only three noms?Does it really matter??John Corigliano is one of the most gifted concert masters and composers of our times. His scores are really amazing and a music experience for everyone who really likes filmmusic. His music for ALTERED STATES shooked the world when the film was released. His score for REVOLUTION was a work of a master.
It is a honour for the academy that a person like Corigliano took the oscar. He deserved it and i believe that noone deserved it as much as him.Do you people really believe that ANGELA'S ASHES had a better score than THE RED VIOLIN?!For god's name!!

I figured Corigliano would win -- he represents the "classy" vote, which the Academy can rarely resist. I still think it would have been Morricone, though -- EXCEPT that he was not nominated. I thought otherwise there was a teensy chance for Thomas Newman in an AMERICAN BEAUTY sweep, but the others ... why was THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY even nominated? One of the most ordinary scores I've heard in a long time. I still don't know ANGELA'S ASHES.

Dan Brecher has a good point about the difference between shooting scripts and final versions. I thought AMERICAN BEAUTY a somewhat self-satisfied, borderline cartoony and effete piece of work, elevated principally by its actors and the sober direction of Sam Mendes (HARDLY the best job I saw last year, though competent).

Another Best Original Script winner, THELMA AND LOUISE, is DREADFUL on the printed page; it was Ridley Scott and his two leads who made sense out of it.

Hey, do they ever read in Hollywood till they're sure they'll have to learn the lines?

Worst Sport of the Evening award probably goes to Denzel Washington, who had a distinct "I don't wanna be here just to lose to Kevin Spacey" look on his face every time the camera found it. He probably should have won his second award for MALCOLM X, except that the movie was such a load ... he seems to have an instinct for tracking down good roles, but he doesn't seem to think too hard about the movies enveloping them. Jim Carrey made the same mistake with MAN ON THE MOON -- I think the reason he wasn't nominated was because the movie is formless and bizarrely thought out (or NOT thought out -- another example of an insanely overrated pair of scribes, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, whose work is only as good as the directors and actors who interpret it -- I read the ED WOOD script and thought "this is NEVER gonna play," but Burton, Depp, Landau and co. made it play much better than it had any right to.)

    Dex,

How can you say that there was no political speeches? I don't remember who it was, but someone accepting an award for The Cider House Rules went on and on about pro-abortion, going so far as to thank planned parenthood. Someone always has to put in their political views in these awards shows.

    Rocco,

I disagree with your "Worst sport of the night" award. I think that goes to Russell Crowe. Everytime they showed him he looked bored out of his mind. He did seem to perk up and do a good job presenting though.

    Over-all I think that this was one of the better Oscar shows I've seen in recent years. The only problems were;
    a) Burt Bacharat, I think he is horrible.
    b) I was really mad that Dogma didn't get nominated for anything.
    c) And I like that Corigliano won, but was mad that they didn't nominate one of the many fine scores that Carter Burwell composed last year.

Oops. Didn't see that (thankfully). I think award shows should be political-free. Just get up there and concentrate on the movies and talent involved in what you're celebrity. It isn't that hard to do.

Wow! What a movie! Let's watch Kevin Spacey play with himself and chase after a sixteen year old girl!

One of the lamest movies I've ever seen, though Spacey did deliver a good performance. (He's one of those actors who can do a great performance now matter how bad the movie is. L.A. Confidential comes to mind).

Russell Crowe just appears to be a very layed-back guy, as I've witnessed in interviews and such. He probably knows not to get all excited and smiley over something he might not win. (I, personally, would've like to have seen him win, just because I saw one of his early Australian films and went, "Damn! Give this guy an Oscar!" He's an amazing talent). Still, I like Kevin Spacey as well, but I'd give it to Crowe if I could.

I would have to agree that American Beauty was not a great film, it lacked emotional punch, originality,It did ave a good script though, but the movie lacked. I was not blown away by American Beauty, but I was by Magnolia and 3 Kings, now they were good flicks, I just could not believe the characters in AB, I kept thinking that I am watching kevin Spacey and Annete Benning, so all in all, AB was good, but not great, It was too simple.
