I've been looking through some of the movies that are coming out this year. Some of them look great (Dinosaur) and others look like trash (Battlefield Earth.)

However, a thought dawned on me. This last year was one of the best movie years of the decade. However, when I entered that year, the movies that I wanted to see (mainly Star Wars: Episode I, The Blair Witch Project and The Green Mile) turned out to be the most dissapointing.

Movies such as The Matrix, American Beauty, Being John Malkovich, and The Sixth Sense all came out of nowhere but soon became my favorites of the year.

It's interesting how much hype is really involved in the business of making movies. This year, I hope that the films released can stand up better to the hype. Hopefully, there won't be a major dissapointment this year. And even if that happens, there are always those underdog pictures.

Even though it's only March and there are many more months for movies to surface from nowhere and take ALL those pesky Oscars, I was wondering what's on that list of yours for movies to see this year. Then, after the films come out, I would like to see which one's stood up to the hype and which ones failed horribly. It would be interesting to see .

Of all the movies I saw in the theater last year, only about six were worth my money, and of out of those, only The Mummy, Double Jeopardy, and Galaxy Quest were worth owning. (Well, Quest isn't out yet, but I'll have the DVD as soon as it arrives).

As for this year, Scream 3 exceeded my expactations. The trailers made it look pretty bad, and I was very worried it would be worse than the second - if that was even possible. But it actually surprised me, and I enjoyed it.

I have my doubts about M:I2, but will see it simply because I liked the first one. Battlefield Earth looks interesting. I like Travolta a lot, and am looking forward to hearing Elia Cmiral take on his biggest picture yet. (Hopefully, this will be Cmiral's breakout film, and this talent will get a lot more attention). X-Men I'll probably see (though I can tell it's gonna suck beyond belief) just to see Famke Janssen in that cool skin-tight outfit. Not many other ads make me even remotely interested in the films they're for, so I doubt this year will be a satisfying experience, movie-wise.

Of course, of all the years I've been going to the theater, none have come close to the year of 1996, when practically every movie released was just fun, fun, fun.

    dantoris,

Please furnish your list of the "fun fun fun" movies from 1996. I'm just curious.

Keep in mind, this aren't necessarily the greatest films ever made, but they sure are entertaining (to me, anyway):

    Executive Decision
    MST3K
    Twister
    Mission: Impossible
    Dragonheart
    The Rock
    The Phantom
    Eraser
    The Nutty Professor
    Broken Arrow
    The Frighteners
    Escape From L.A.
    Mulholland Falls
    The Glimmer Man
    The Ghost and The Darkness
    Ransom
    Star Trek: First Contact
    Mars Attacks
    Scream

1996 has been my favorite movie year of them all. I'm sure I caused a few laughs in there somewhere, but hey - I'm me, and I like what I like.
