RAZZIES® GO WILD OVER 'WEST' ALSO NAMING THE WORST of THE 90's - AND THE CENTURY!

Celebrating two decades as Tinseltown's Tackiest Anti-Awards Show, The Golden Raspberry Award Foun-dation chose The Traditional Day BEFORE That Other Award Show to unveil "winners" of its 20th Annual RAZZIE® Awards, Dis-Honoring Worst Achievements in Film. For 1999, The 1990's and The 20th Century.

To the surprise of no one unfortunate enough to have seen it, the Most-RAZZed movie of 1999 turned out to be WILD WILD WEST. A wretched remake of the mid-60's TV hit as a behemothly over-budget, special-effects-laden box office bomb, WEST "won" five RAZZIES, including not only Worst Picture of The Year but also Worst Director ("Berry" Sonnenfeld), Worst Screenplay, Worst Song (for its rap-style title tune) and Worst Screen Couple for co-stars Kevin Kline and Will Smith, who Roger Ebert said had "so little screen chemistry they seem to be acting in front of rear screen projections of each other!" 

Other 1999 RAZZIES went to: Adam Sandler for Worst Actor as an amazingly idiotic adoptive father in BIG DADDY; Heather Donahue as Worst Actress, playing the increasingly irksome director of a doomed documentary in THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT; Computer-created creature and Internet Whipping Boy Jar-Jar Binks of STAR WARS: EPISODE I as Worst Supporting Actor; And tank-topped "nuclear physicist" Denise Richards of THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH for Worst Supporting Actress. 

Special RAZZIES were also awarded to Pauly Shore as The Worst New Star of The 1990's, SHOWGIRLS as the decade's Worst Picture and Perpetual RAZZIE Targets Sylvester Stallone and Madonna as the Worst Actor and Actress of The 20th Century. The Worst Picture(s) of The Century are yet-to-be determined. They are being voted on right now by the general public in a poll entitled 100 YEARS, 100 STINKERS being conducted on The RAZZIE Website (WWW.RAZZIES.COM.) More than 6,250 people have already participated, and results will be unveiled at mid-year 2000. 

RAZZIE nominations and "winners" were determined by mailing ballots to more than 465 G.R.A.F. members (film fans, film journalists and film professionals) in 34 US states and eight foreign countries. The RAZZIES were founded in 1980 by John Wilson, a UCLA Film School graduate and author of EVERYTHING I KNOW I LEARNED AT THE MOVIES. The actual RAZZIE Award, a gold-spray-painted plastic raspberry atop a mangled Super 8 film reel, now has an inflation-adjusted estimated street value of about $4.27.
