We had a similar thread on FSM and I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to bring in some new listeners and viewers to this incredible show.

I was inspired by how good "Hush" was. The first time I saw it, I was caught up in the story. This time I really listened to the score.

It is quite a challenge to tell the story without any dialogue, just action and music. But what music Beck gives us! More than any other episode (except for maybe "The Becoming") the music was almost a character in the story! Even my sister, who considers me a freak, commented on how good the score was.

Christopher Beck certainly deserves another Emmy nomination (He actually won for "The Becoming") and he (and "Hush") certainly deserves a score release.

I know that there is a promo of his stuff out there and I would be interested in hearing from those who have it how it is.

There are actually two Beck promo cds put out by his agency. One contains music from the second season and one has third season music.

So THIS is where everyone went! Finally got around to checking here. Maybe we should try to keep this baby on the first page so others can find it.

MWRuger: pretty sure the mp3s on the CBCC site (which is FINALLY back up) ARE from the second season promo CD. 3rd season promo mp3s are not posted because (according to Beck) Fox & TVT records are in negotiation as we speak on the score album.

Couldn't agree more on Hush. Also, what did you think of the music in the 2 parter of Faith's return? Some damn fine stuff!

    Jack!! Same question to you.

    Where's Joan?

Missed you guys--let's catch up! And hey, anybody else who wants to join in the fun, the more the merrier!

Hi debi. I'm here. Welcome. Me shy, H R? And I'd rather look a little uncouth than look like Darwell or the latest Howardism..DeNiro.

Loved the rerun of HUSH last week, but it almost cost me my marriage. My husband never watches Buffy, but I insisted he'd love HUSH. He hated the whole thing and even had nightmares. (Maybe he needs a dose of my estrogen!! ) I'm enjoying the whole new "Adam" spin off and Beck's wonderful scoring. I wonder if Faith will ever return?
    Again, welcome debi.

Welcome Back! I just about gave up on the ongoing Buffy/Beck Thread.

The second part of Faith's return was excellant. The music in box car was poignant without being maudlin. Very well done.

We have to a SCORE CD out! Those MP3's are okay but there ain't two CD's worth there.

PS. My offer of a CD of those MP3's from the other board still stands. Just let me know if you want one and I will do the deed!!

    Unfortunately, no.

The only Buffy that can be found is a track on the Buffy Soundtrack album. There is a promo of Beck's buffy stuf, but it is not generally available. Curse the luck!

Joan: oooh, hubby had nightmares, huh? But wasn't that the whole point? I feel his pain. Those "gentlemen" just give me the shivers. Nice that the promos for the second showing of Hush had some really nice quotes from the Washington Post etc: "brilliant" and "a classic." I mean, WE knew that, but... Now if we could only get Roush (TV Guide critic) who's a BIG BtVS booster to notice the DANG MUSIC!

Anyone rewatch the crossover? Beck did the several cues (besides the obvious one at the end). Back to your point about melody, Joan, I always know if a cue is his--just listen for the melody line.

TimT: Since Hush is THIS season, it couldn't be on a promo disk yet--those are generally produced after the season is over. However, I'd be SHOCKED if it wasn't on the soundtrack.

MWRuger: Faith 2 parter--LOVED the eerie stuff when she was wandering the hospital. And the dream cues. Oh AND under the spell that Tara & Willow did. Wow.

Hi H Rocco! Good to see ya again!

BMustang: you mentioned some of my faves. By the way, ever notice that Vision of Jenny is a dreamlike, eerie version of Remembering Jenny?

BMustang--Vision of Jenny mp3 is available on the Chris Beck site along with about 20 others at: http://oxfordtwentyfour.ne.mediaone.net/cbcc/

Streaming does not work, but downloading does. If you have trouble downloading, I know an alternate site as well.

By the way, if anyone should have a burning musical question they'd love to ask Chris Beck, there's a discussion board at that URL above, and Beck does stop by to answer questions, usually every 3 weeks or so.

Here's an interesting note re: that Willow/Tara spell music in the Faith 2 parter: Beck posted on the BtVS board that "The W/T music was mostly just strings. I slaved over the sampled strings in that scene for half a day before giving up and hiring a violinist to come over and overdub on top of himself 6 times or so, to make a little mini-violin-section. Made a big difference." Gotta love a perfectionist.

    New eps on Tuesday!

Yet another clever episode for the Buffster. I loved the way they re-shot the opening credits to include Jonathon. A very nice touch. It took me a while to figure out whether it was real or not. Adam is very scary. He is far too “Awake”, as he puts it, for my taste. You know, I wouldn’t be shocked to see someone go down hard in the battle to stop him. I used to think Anya was wearing a red shirt, but now I think Tara’s clothes are starting to look crimson.

Uranium powered? Don’t think so. Unless he’s carrying around a nuclear powerplant in his chest. More likely its Magic drawing on the uranium to power the spells that keep him going. Still wicked.

Angel was good, but not as interesting. There was one nice musical bit though. When Cordeila faked her vision, the music came on hard enough to make you wonder for a split second and then kind petered out as she started noticing that no one was buying.

Jack & MW: Wasn't that the biggest HOOT!! I mean, sending up John Barry/007! When we got that Bond musical punchline at the end of the teaser, I almost shot pop out of my nose! I was practically on the floor laughing from the music alone! Really, really well done.

timmer: aren't you a Barry fan? You had to have loved this ep!

MW: Actually, I liked the Angel ep "Eternity" a lot. Cordy was certainly more Cordy than she's been. I liked that the Angel/Angelus thing has now gotten so much more fragile. It's become more than he has to lose his soul to go bad. Now it's apparent that it's more like Angel has a multiple personality disorder--that the Angelus personality is just submerged & can be made to come out under the right circumstances. That's a lot more scary than only having to worry about the "true happiness" thing.

I think that might mean that every vampire has its original host's soul along for the ride. It just takes some extraordinary circumstances to put the host back into control.

BTW, I never said I didn't like angel, just that I thought Buffy was more interesting.

The music in this last "Buffy" seemed to start off as a Barry tribute, but then it also seemed at times to reflect David Arnold's take on the series. Either way, a great episode and the score had me laughing out loud.

FYI, Beck stopped by the CBCC discussion board (URL above) over the weekend to answer some questions. Re the last "Bond" Jonathan ep, he said:

"…Superstar, indeed it was a blast. My first draft went even further in the 70's direction but that aspect was toned down for the final airing - it was a bit much in places."

Bel366: "David Arnold's take"--thought it was just Walter Murphy and Shawn & Sean who'd worked on BtVS. I know Danny's done Stargate SG1...

Really like the range of styles in the series, makes for a lot of musical variety!

debi-I guess I could have been a bit clearer.
I meant that I thought the music was close in feel to David Arnold's take on the Bond series. There were times I thought that the episode's music sounded a lot like the score for THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH.

Again, a great episode and the music continues to be one of the best parts of the series.

Bel366: Okay, I get it now. Didn't see The World is Not Enough. Meant to.

FYI all, Beck posted on the BtVS board this week. Seems episode #19 (New Moon Rising, written by Marti Noxon) contains MORE music than Hush. Apparently, we can expect to experience some pain. Given the title, I'm thinking it involves the return of a "written out" character. And he said he's "heard great things about the finale from a scoring standpoint." There's news about the forthcoming score soundtrack, too, I'll post that later.

As promised, re: the forthcoming soundtrack, there's good news & bad news. Good news: production will be "very soon." Bad news: not all requested cues may be on it. Here's Chris Beck's answer to the score soundtrack question:

"It would be premature to think too hard about this, but one of the decisions facing me soon (very soon I promise) will be whether to a) include only season 2 and 3 material, and hope there will be a volume 2, or b) put season 4 material on there as well at the expense of some oft-requested clips from seasons 2 and 3."

Me again. Only S2 & 3 would mean, among other things, no Hush (!!) no Willow/Oz theme, etc. etc. But eliminating cues from S2 & 3 is a tough choice, too.

Question: which would you prefer, option a or option b?

This brings up the whole question of tv soundtracks. Do you want episodic ones (ala the BABYLON 5 cds that Sonic Images have done) or just a collection of different themes from different episodes.

Personally, when the music is substantially different from episode to episode, I say go with the complete scores. In the case of the BABYLON 5 ones, they do tend to sound somewhat alike.

I don't know if that many soundtracks would be economically viable. I wouldn't mind a two cd set, but I can't imagine that it could be produced profitably.

Maybe a 2-3 Season CD followed by a Season 4 standalone would work. Hush is long enough that I wouldn't want it cut short to just fit.

If season 2/3 sold well enough, a follow up should be possible.

Jack: I'd LOVE a double CD. Sounds like TVT is unwilling to consider that. Fools! I think it would sell--a lot of people have been asking for that. How do we convince TVT?

Obi Jok Kenobi: (I love that name!) Hush --I agree, one the best eps ever. Critics here in the states went NUTS praising it. Funny story--Beck came on the posting board after having read the script, saying how great it was, but that it was an OPERA, a month wouldn't be enough & he was gonna beg Joss Whedon for more time. Then Whedon posted, and Beck DID beg him right there on the board. He got ONE more day. He said later he needed three weeks and a 70 piece orchestra. I wish! He also said:

"Hush". It took a while to get used to the lack of dialog - I (and many of my colleagues) am very preconditioned to tone it down when characters are speaking - otherwise the music fights with the dialog. When I first started writing I found myself creating all this room in the score for the characters' mouthing, then realizing the space didn't need to be there and rewriting. Plus, there was just so much featured music. Your average Buffy cue (by necessity) is normally not very interesting or dense, otherwise it would draw attention to itself in the scene. "Hush" was twenty minutes of the opposite kind - the cues were just full of notes and counterpoint and went ON and ON. But I wouldn't have traded it with an episode of, say, Law & Order, which contains, on average, three minutes of extremely simple (and effective, I might add) scoring. Opportunities like "Hush" are rare for composers in TV, and I'm forever grateful to Joss for giving it to me."

BTW, Hush is as far as y'all have gotten? Oh, you have SUCH good things in store for you! Just wait!

Bel366: That is a really interesting idea! You mean episode suites? I actually think that would work quite well since the eps and the music they contain are so unique. Probably couldn't do every ep though. Which ones would you want?

MWRuger: I wouldn't want Hush cut either just to be included. And if it WAS included, then other cues would have to go. You've heard the S2 cues. Which cues would you be willing to part with, if it came to that? Which cues would you be really upset to see go?

My thinking on Hush was more from a marketing standpoint since that episode and it's music drew a lot of attention from non-score fans. Maybe we could just have a sticker "From the composer of Hush"?

I guess it's the accountant in me trying to figure what would sell the most so we might get a second cd. How about "Buffy and Angel love themes"?

I definitely would rather have more of SEasons 2 and 3, and just wait for season four. I don't remember much music from season 4! Silly Me. I have some homework for someone to do. Can someone name all the scores songs from seasons 2 and 3, in the order of the episode, and the order they were played on the episode? And possibly from season four also. That would make it easier for me to remember some. Here are some I would like to see on the score release: Ampata's Kiss, Moment of Happiness, Remembering Jenny, Vision of Jenny, Waking Willow, definitley "Slayer's Elegy", the one where Buffy kills Angel on Becoming Part 2, and the one on Lover's Walk, where they are walking away from the funeral at the end of the episode, after Cordelia gets impaled.

Yeah. Australians are quite far behind in some shows.

Buffy/Angel and The X-Files aren't so far behind, but Star Trek is like 2 years behind. But then again, Star Trek is only around 7 months behind with episodes on video.

Bel366 - The Babylon 5 scores sound a lot the same as most of the episodes are linked thematically, so to save time, Chris Franke uses the same themes over to give some sort of linkage, besides the storyline.

I have to admit to being something of a latecomer to this show. Thanks to the badgering of a friend in L.A., I started watching full time during the second season and have been hooked ever since (thank God there are new episodes starting next week).

debi: I guess with the exception of this season's "Hush," "Fear Itself" and the one with Jonathan, my impressions of the music comes more from a series of moments rather than entire episodes. My personal favorite
moment this season was easily when the "fight" music kicked in full blast during Xander and Harmony's slap fest. On a side note, I work in the cd section of a bookstore and we had someone come in looking for The Sundays cover of "Wild Horses" after they heard it on the prom episode.

Obi Jok Kenobi: I liked the music from BABYLON 5. I have a few of the cds (I had to get "Sleeping in Light," which has some of Christopher Franke's best work on the series, I think).

I can't think of any that I want cut. What I think they should do is do a full cd of season 2/3 and then release episode cd's for Hush and The Becoming.

Both are long enough and acclaimed enough to warrant a B5 style disc.

Jack: How's about "Emmy winning composer of the Buffy/Angel love theme"?

BMUSTANG: Season4--Caveman music (Beer Bad), Willow/Oz theme (Wild at Heart), action music (The Initiative), Indian motif (Pangs), ALL of Hush, Floating the Rose (A New Man), a lot of music from the two parter (NOT going to spoil Obi), & the OO7 stuff (Superstar). I agree with your choices for S2. Beck only did half the eps (IMO, the better eps!) that season. The complete list:

"When She Was Bad"-- Resurrection, Sledgehammer
    "Inca Mummy Girl"-- Ampata's Kiss
"The Dark Age"-- Mark of Eyghon
    "Ted"-- Accused, Robot Rampage
    "Surprise" --Escape
"Innocence"-- Moment of Happiness, What's That Do?
"Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered"--The Buffy Rat, Mob Rush, Twice the Fool
    "Passion"-- Angel Waits, Remembering Jenny
"I Only Have Eyes For You"-- Love is Forever
"Becoming 1 & 2"-- Show Me Your World, Cursed, Devil Child, As Angel Becomes, Massacre, Waking Willow, Vision of Jenny, Close Your Eyes.

Obi Jok Kenobi: I hear the UK is a LOT behind. And eps shown all out of order.

Bel366: Besides Hush, Fear Itself & Superstar, I'd add Pangs and This Year's Girl/Who Are You to the S4 "entire ep" list. Re: sidenote, Amazon's buyer reviews of the BtVS CD were interesting--considering most would be buying for the bands/songs, quite a few folks mentioned Beck's Close Your Eyes track. Unexpected since that track is VERY orchestral and hardly alternative.

MW: I'd hate to lose any of 'em. But it would REALLY upset to me to lose Ampata's Kiss, Angel Waits, Accused, Cursed, Remembering Jenny/Vision of Jenny, Buffy Rat (for fun!) or ANYthing from Becoming. Which is practically every cue. BTW, I like the idea of stand-alone Hush & Becoming CDs!

Well in all honesty, I'll take what I can get!

It seems like if it's not Star Trek or B5 song compilations seem to be the order of the day.
Not that most series have all that great a set of scores anyway, but look how long we had to wait for a decent release of Lost in Space.

    Oh well, Here's hoping!!!

debi - I belive the UK is actually not that far behind, depending on which channel it is on. Sky One shows both Buffy and Angel on Friday nights, but the BBC (I think it is, or Channel 4) is only upto season 2.

    Also, reposting this from earlier.

I would like a track order/listing for the season 2 promo please! I have the mp3's, but they aren't numbered in any order. I would like to know in what order they go. Many thanks.

New episodes tonight means new music from Beck. Both promise some interesting scoring choices tonight.

    Great Episodes!

    Buffy:
It was really interesting to see mostly the gang deal with this issue as Buffy and Riley were…,um, ..Occupied. Beck did some awesome work on the very creepy music just when we start to realize that the place is haunted. Very much Ghost music!

    Angel:
This is my favorite episode so far! It was great to see faith dealing with the ramifications of what had happened in Sunnydale. I knew that Faith was hurting in that boxcar, but I didn’t know she was that gone to despair that she was seeking death so assiduously! Great battle music!
