    Hey Guys,

Can I ask what your opinions are on the following Goldsmith titles:
    Morituri/The saboteur (Tsunami)
    Freud (Tsunami)
    Flim Flam Man/Studs Lonigan (Tsunami)
    Justine (Tsunami)
    The stripper/The travelling ex (Tsunami)
Von Ryan's express/Our man Flint (Tsunami)

Should I get any of the above?

    Thanks in advance.

    Foobs

Justine is good with reasonable sound quality, The others i didn't bother with as I had read reviews at the time saying the sound quality was awful.

Slightly off topic here, but if you like Bernstein, Tsunami's SONS OF KATIE ELDER and HALLELUJAH TRAIL have superb sound quality.

Morituri and Justine are the ones to get. Justine's theme adds a middle section to the theme of Studs Lonigan. Go listen to it at Tom and Sami's page. Morituri and In Harm's Way sound generally fine (and, at 75 minutes, you can't beat it!). Both good scores. Morituri was one of Horner's many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many "inspirations".

    Foobsie,

Of the ones you listed I've got Morituri and The Stripper.

Morituri didn't do too much for me, but I think that The Stripper is one of Jerry Goldsmith's most underrated scores. It's almost like Alex North in its hothouse melodrama blend of orchestra and bluesy undertones.

The Travelling Executioner, which accompanies The Stripper, is a wild hodge-podge. Some of it is very burlesque, but the experimental "concrete music" (apparently) is hugely interesting.

Sorry, I'm not an audiophile, so I can't knowledgebly rate the sound quality. I haven't scrutinized either of these through headphones, but I would say that they were fair to good. Certainly better than those "Best" releases (100 Rifles, The General With The Cock-Eyed Id, etc.)

I'd go ahead and get The Stripper, but beware, it's not typical Goldsmith. Actually, now I WOULDN'T get The Stripper, because it's a boot, and, leaving aside the morality of the issue (yeah, I know, boring moralist), having the terrible boot of 100 Rifles has prevented me from getting the FSM release.

If I were a rich man, doo bee doo bee doo bee doo bee doo bee doo bee doo bee dee.

    Thanks for your invaluable input.
But I still don't get it.

I found these titles available for ordering on amazon.co.uk. How can such a retailer sell bootlegs. Oh BTW did I mention that I am an audiophile? So sound dynamics is as important for me as anything else. Especially with Goldsmith scores. The percussive elements really shine in Dolby Surround.

BTW, where can I find "In Harm's way?"

    Thanks in advance,

    Foobs

I'm going to have to contact Amazon..."Studs Lonigan" is a UA title and Tsunami has no authorization from MGM (the owners of the score) to release it on a soundtrack CD. They get by under a loophole in German copyright law, but legally they can only sell in Germany. (Eventually the titles that MGM owns will have an official release).

    Thanks for the Amazon info!

And so yes, Mr Neal.... (your colors are evident now)

Please tell me, when is MGM planning on releasing the scores? What marketing info do you guys hope to obtain from our discussions? And why would you deny someone the opportunity to obtain and listen to the score of his/hers likings?

The intent of this discussion was not to rattle!

    Hey foozbie!

Drop me an E-mail and I'd be more than happy to discuss this with you . I don't want to deny anybody anything, but, there are right ways to do things and wrong ways to do things. Bootlegs can affect our decision as to what scores we release. They really do affect the sales of legitimate releases.

I'll say. I'll believe the reissues when I see them (current Rhino and Ryko releases excluded, of course). I want expanded releases, not run-of-the-mill LP transfers!

MGM and Chapter III will be releasing Goldsmith's WILD ROVERS/THE LAST RUN, LOGAN'S RUN/COMA on June 20.

The duo will also be releasing more than 30 other titles from the MGM library, including RYAN'S DAUGHTER, THE DIRTY DOZEN, GUNS FOR SAN SEBASTIAN, GRAND PRIX, and THE CINCINNATI KID!

    "LOGAN'S RUN/COMA"
Does this mean that these two scores will be combined on one single CD? I think I remember they are both long enough to warrant seperate complete releases. Still, I'll sure get that CD when it comes out.

BUT WHAT ABOUT "GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY"!!!!!?

NP: The Final Conflict (Jerry's best?)

Chapter III is issuing 25 discs that will represent 40 different scores. Some will be two scores on one set. I'm sure a lot of these two-for-ones are straight issues of the original LPs on MGM Records.

I don't specifically know what the Goldsmith releases will be like.

The "slash" titles (LOGAN'S RUN/COMA) are supposedly two scores on the same disc.

I just wonder if WILD ROVERS/THE LAST RUN will include the extra cue that the MCA LP reissue of WILD ROVERS did ... which another "slash" reissue, WILD ROVERS/GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY, did not ...

I don't think ChrisN will mind my passing this information on . . .

I e-mailed him to inquire about the likelihood of a CD release of Elmer Bernstein's score for THE SCALPHUNTERS, and he replied that he's "working very hard to get the [United Artists] masters in shape and ready for release. The Bernstein titles are at the top of my list." Great news!!!
