At the Other Board, we had a nice big Godzilla thread going. But almost no one from MM (to my knowledge) posted there. I wonder what you assorted gentlemen (and the occasional ladies) think of the Godzilla movies (and please let's not discuss that travesty that the Evil Twins Emmerich & Devlin perpetrated in 1998).

Gamera fans are welcome to contribute as well. (Actually the recent Gamera pictures are way BETTER than the recent Godzilla pictures -- but we'll get into that, or we won't.)

NP: KING KONG VS. GODZILLA (Akira Ifukube, 1962, stereo mix -- really amazing sounding in stereo -- the stereo tapes had been lost until 1991, ironically around the same time Ifukube came out of movie retirement to score GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDRAH)

    GODZILLA is very cool,
    haven't seen many lately.
Guess I'll have to catch up,
    very busy I will be.

    I really like the first,
how the killed him was oh so cool.
But my favorite is TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA,
man I love the final duel.

Lucky thing I dipped into Page 2. You liked TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA, eh? Very rare reaction, indeed!

Did you see the Paramount Home Video version? I'm assuming you did. It's chopped to shreds, I'm afraid, even the broadcast TV version was better.

Or were you lucky enough to see the Japanese subtitled version that Toho occasionally lets out for theatrical play?

And will you have a hard time composing a verse answer to these questions?

    Ever wondering.

NP: MOTHRA VS. GODZILLA (Akira Ifukube)

Have not seen the Paramount version,
    just the one on TV.
I used to have it on video,
my cousin gave it to me.

Would like to see the subtitled version,
if I ever get the opportunity.
My cousin and I would like to see it soon,
    big GODZILLA fans are we.

I'm a big fan of GODZILLA. I have most of his movies and all of Ifukube's GODZILLA scores as well as some of his other Sci-Fi scores. I know I'm going to get some nasty comments for this, but I actually enjoyed Tri-Star's GODZILLA. However, I think that Devlin and Emmerich should have told Sony they wouldn't do GODZILLA and make their own monster movie. I think if they would have made the same movie and got rid of GODZILLA's roar and changed the title to "ATTACK OF THE MUTATED LIZARD" or "THE GIANT IGUANA" then the movie would have been received better. I took it for what it was; a movie about a giant monster. The plot was as silly and meaningless as any 1950-1960 monster movie. Plus I think the creature design was cool. I also think GODZILLA's looks would need to be updated for American audiences, but they could have stayed closer to the original design. I love the design for G-2000. Too bad the music is horrible.
I have both english dubbed versions and letter-boxed, subtitled versions of GODZILLA's movies on video. I've been a GODZILLA fan since I was 5 years old and saw my very first monster movie; GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS. I've was fortunate enough to see the original version of GOJIRA when I was 10.

    Mr. Olivarez,

you have managed to isolate many of my own basic objections to that obscenity that the Evil Twins (Emmerich/Devlin) cooked up. I, too, thought that they might as well have called it something like ATTACK OF THE GIANT EARWAX CREATURE and it would have gotten a BETTER RECEPTION. Calling that beast "Godzilla" was just a big old spitball in the face of anyone who cares about the way our reptilian buddy there is portrayed ...

When you're referring to G 2000, do you mean the most recent Japanese picture, GODZILLA MILLENNIUM? I'm still trying to seek out people who have actually watched that one. (Not bad, in my humble.)

NP: TORA! TORA! TORA! (Goldsmith, rerecording)

I watched an enjoyable Godzilla yesterday. Godzilla vs. King Ghidrah. (Hey, one
character was called Kirosawa. Homage?) This was a fun, layered, and very political
movie. Sometimes I wish I could have watched these films in order of production as it’s a
tad bit confusing as to the attitudes toward the “Big Guy.” Savior/sinner/victim/destroyer.
The tones in the films vary. This movie seems to depict Japan’s love/hate relationship
with Godzilla...and America and WWII. Time machines, the origin of Godzilla, destiny,
economic dominance, and the always ubiquitous ecological-nuclear wastes are all tackled
here.. Ifukue’s musical themes are back and seem and more developed plus there are some
additional Ghidrah motifs. A fun watch. (However, the scene of the general remembering
the origin of the kinder Godzilla was very tragic.)

somebody needs to digitally camcord Godzilla 2000 so we can download it...

Evil twins-- but according to aint it cool news they're going to get all oscared on acount of their newfound breathtaking artistry and genius, though if the Academy of late is an indication of the heights of cultural purity, that's probably true (Michael Bay'll get his the next year).

Rocco, yes I was referring to GODZILLA MILLENIUM. I have not seen the movie, just the pics and a sample of some of the score. I love the new design Toho came up with.

Actually, Ware-san, Michael Bay will probably TECHNICALLY have to wait until 2002 before he receives his rewards for PEARL HARBOR.

GODZILLA MILLENNIUM is an interesting picture -- gets off to an amazing start, then somehow sort of peters out. I agree the new suit design IS pretty terrific.

Rocco-san, a while back the Sci-Fi Channel had a "Godzilla" marathon, and I watched "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah" (Ghidora or Ghidra?). I really loved it, but what impressed me most was the craftsmanship in the monster design. It was as if Godzilla had a face-lift!
As a child, I was always disappointed with the look of the Godzilla suits, having seen the beautifully sculpted Ray Harryhausen monsters, but this "new" look was a wonderful upgrade, or at least I thought so.

A couple of weeks ago, I watched Godzilla l985, which reintroduced Raymond Burr's character. Before the movie started, I was surprised to see that the video had the Canadian short "Bambi Meets Godzilla." (I wondered if the Godzilla makers would want this hooked to one of their movies.) Anyone know how the Toho company felt about this satirical short piece?

Being the sort of company it is, I'm sure Toho would want to sue the thing out of existence. As it constitutes a parody, however, they wouldn't have much luck. The history of Toho's suits in the United States is awesome, and awesomely petty. But Toho's lawyers are chump change compared to Disney's -- THEY'RE the ones I'd have been scared of -- but the Bambi CHARACTER as such is in the public domain, since it derives in an old German children's novel.

Timmer, haven't you ever seen "Bambi vs. Godzilla"? It's a hilarious short film (very short) that was made by a group of school students years ago.
It's an animated line drawing that features dainty little Bambi grazing in a field, while the credits roll alongside. As soon as the credits are finished, a giant reptilian foot comes swiftly down, flattening Bambi, and then the same list of credits rolls alongside the picture again...cracks me up every time!
