Topic: What about Goldsmith's Detroit concert?

I've been reading everywhere about the program of the LSO concerts that Goldsmith will be conducting.I'm going to one of the Detroit concerts in June but I haven't heard what that program will be. I know Goldsmith has apretty standard lineup with his concerts but lately he has been mixing it up a bit.
Does anyonw know what the Detroit program is yet? I'm hoping he'll give a sampling of his Hollow Man score. That would be cool.

*I* was going to post something like this. I wonder less about the programme than I do:WHO ELSE IS GOING? (I definitely am. I did see him at Carnegie Hall, but he may not choose to return to NY -- this may be my last chance to see him at a relatively accessible venue.)
Speak up, people.

Don't feel so bad Riddler.I've literally waited for years for JG to come give a concert with the our local orchestra but Detroit is as close as he's ever gotten. I wasn't gonna let this chance pass but I still have to jump on a plane to get there. I heard that he frequently does the concert curcuit in your area. I think he was in San Jose a couple of years ago. And last year he also did his big bash with the Hollywood bowl orchestra. At least those are in the same state in which you live.

Well, sir Wedge, you could start by designating a meeting place. I'm not sure anyone else here knows the city at all, and the map the DSO provides is none too informative.

HAL 2000 - I don't think Goldsmith has ever been to the Bay Area, especially San Jose. I used to live right near there for 20 years (before moving less than a year ago), and I never heard of Goldsmith coming there to perform. John Williams was in SF once about 4 years ago or so, but if Goldsmith had come to San Jose (or anywhere in the South Bay Area) I would've known.Oh, well. Guess I can always hope he comes there.

Maybe you're right dantoris. I just remember reading an article a couple of years ago written by a guy who drove to hear a Goldsmith concert in San Jose (Or was it San Diego?). Anyway, he said that there was obvious friction between Goldsmith and the players and toward the end of the program it was REALLY obvious because Goldsmith made a couple of sly digs at the orchestra and during the applause at the conclusion the players refused to stand up. Yow!

Ouch! That reminds me of something Goldsmith said WELL before he started doing concert tours: "American orchestras are conductor killers." That suggests to me he really DID enjoy working with the New York FILMHarmonic -- he insisted on singling them out for applause, and if I remember right, they joined in the original standing O. (I still remember the trumpet player who did a satirical little version of the MACARTHUR march, partly warming up or tuning the instrument, but also partly, I felt, because he liked it -- this was during the intermission, before MACARTHUR was actually played.)Goldsmitn enjoyed that concert so much that he decided to reward us not just with a pre-planned encore (the tango from SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION) but an encore performance of STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT. (I'm still touched by remembering his reaction to our endless applause -- "But I don't have anything else," he said. Thinking a bit, he said "Okay, bring out my STAR TREK score." I hope the Detroit orchestra loves him just as much as we do.)
NP: "Still" (Alanis Morissette, written for and appearing on the DOGMA soundtrack -- it only just occurred to me what this song is actually about, and I am awesomely moved by it now -- previously I just liked the beat)

I was wondering if the soloist was Dominick Derasse...
I was just finding my seat again, at the end of the intermission, when I heard this wonderful little "sketch" of a familiar movie theme.
I laughed out loud!I really want to be there in Detroit...

H Rocco - Is that the same concert that I read about? Where, when Goldsmith said he couldn't think of anything else to play, someone in the audience yeld out, "Write something!" and he laughed and responded with, "That's a good one."NP: Stargate - "Caravan to Nagada" *****/*****

This will not be the first time Mr. G has performed with the Detroit orchestra. I almost went to the last one about 9 or 10 years ago.I imagine his return suggests that he had a good experience there. I'm expecting a great concert.

dantoris, I don't remember if he said that there -- it's something I'd hope I'd remember. I *DO* remember someone yelling "Play THE OMEN, Jerry!" and him replying over his shoulder, "You need a CHOIR for that." I think this was the same fellow who let out a big "YEAH!" earlier, when Goldsmith mentioned IN HARM'S WAY.It is the very conversational nature of these concerts that makes them extra-special, to my mind. I remember hearing the tape of his LSO concert from 1989 and being amazed that he actually had prepared comments. "He wants to talk to us!" It flabbergasted me at the time ... Perhaps he's taking a page from the Bruce Springsteen concert principle: "Audiences go wild if you actually talk to them -- they love hearing you do something besides just sing." And Jerry is certainly the equivalent of a rock star to those of us who care ...
NP: HIGH VELOCITY (by the man!) (minor, but pleasant -- I particularly like the little three-note motif for, I think, cymbalom.)

It is apparent that some of you guys have been to multiple Goldsmith performances. What is the best one you ever saw and why and how goes a Goldsmith concert compare to a Williams one (if you've ever seen both such as last year when both visited the Hollywood Bowl )?

Pffft ... there was so much to remember, that one just went over my head, obviously.I've only been to the one Carnegie Hall concert, and heard the LSO tape -- that's the extent of my experience. I've READ a lot of accounts of them in the original Goldsmith Society magazine (don't know what they're calling it this week, haven't seen a copy in forever.)
Now that I think of it, the Goldsmith Society people ought to reprint some of those old articles, like their accounts of watching scoring sessions for LEGEND -- people would really be interested in that material today, more people than were apparently interested THEN. I don't have all those issues myself, but it seems that a few of them were allowed to witness recording for pretty much ALL the Goldsmith/NPO sessions from 1985 on.
WEDGE: HAVE YOU FIGURED OUT HOW OR WHERE WE'RE ALL GOING TO GET TOGETHER FRIDAY? YOU ARE MR. MICHIGAN, AFTER ALL. Jeez, do we wear name tags? I only ran into Chris & Bonita because I happened to remember where their seats were. (I walked to the fourth row, cocked my head and stared -- they're in there SOME-place -- that did the trick.)
NP: MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (James Horner) (as with a lot of his albums, there are some pearls within the overlength: here, to me, it is the "Windsong." I really ADORED this movie.)

Looks like I won't be able to go after all. That is the same weekend that my Dad has his 50th High School reunion, and he and my Mom are going to it. Not a big deal for me, as I hated high school, but he's from a smaller town than me, and he wants to see everyone.
Ss that means I'm going to have to stay around here. Bummsville.

Since Rocco was so kind as to resurrect this thread I would like to ask those among you Goldsmith concert veterans how people get backstage (or wherever) to meet Goldsmith and get him to sign things. I am taking my copy of Islands in the Stream in the hopes that, just maybe, I can get his signature on it. Any tips?

But only for the orchestral stuff! I am usually a big fan of electronic scoring, but not so with most of the cues on this one. "The Sun" is sublime, however.posted 04-03-2000 11:55 AM PT (US) H Rocco

Hey, brother Hatfield! "The Sun" is amazing, but the one I'd really want to hear in concert is "The Monument." I don't own that article Jeff Bond wrote about Goldsmith's concert performances, but I think he hit the nail on the head many times, and one particular thing about his concerts that strikes me is -- they're like "Greatest Hits," they don't often give the general public an impression of how deep and broad his range can run. As an extended piece of what, seven or eight minutes in length, "The Monument" shows off what he can do in an extended passage -- that he's not just a tunesmith (ironically he's often been accused in his career of not being able to write a tune at all, which is ridiculous). That's one reason I was amazed and thrilled that he played the suite from PLANET OF THE APES -- of course, the movie itself is an American favorite, he'd have a harder time selling anyone on a suite from 100 RIFLES ("what's that?")
Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have brought this one back up, now we have dueling Goldsmith Concert threads.
Will Goldsmith be signing? I wonder. He's going to be there for at least four days (which is remarkable to me in itself). At Carnegie Hall, the only chance one had to meet him would have been to buy one of those crazy-priced extra-special, post-concert-cocktail-party type tickets -- I have no idea how it'll go in Detroit. I'd be shy to barge in on him, frankly, but I'll bring the SPFM CD (and gold sparkle-pen, to match the gold seal on it) anyway. He'll have touched the same pen as did Akira Ifukube ... I'll have to encase the thing in Lucite or something after that. (Actually no, I still want signatures from Williams, Morricone, Burwell and Christopher Young, among others. Yeah, dream on. And on.)
NP: TITANIC suite from Varese's "Towering Inferno and Other Disaster Classics" just ended.

I'm SORRY, Marian, I'm not trying to rub it in, but contrary to the lyrics of "Unchained Melody," time does NOT go by so-slowly. If there are still people who intend to go and yet don't have their plans in order, they may be surprised how expensive it can get. (Strange that I am becoming the cheerleader here. But this weekend will undoubtedly be the high point of my entire year so far.)Dry those tears, Mr. Schedenig -- Goldsmith does love doing those concerts, he's still doing piles of 'em, so he may well get to your neck of the woods eventually (hasn't he already?)
