I'm wondering about these two scores. I've heard good stuff about them. What are they like, and are they worth buying?

Do they have good action music, good themes, etc....

I'd get A Bugs Life. It has alot of nice moments, especialy the final suite which is a montage of all the main themes from the movie. If you have a DVD player get the collector's edition dvd (the 2 disc one) `cause it has an isolated score which is complete.

I would also have to go with Antz. I bought both cds and A Bug's Life was not as good as Antz so it just sat in my cd holder for the longest time and then I decided to sell it. The only good track on A Bug's Life was the final suite. Plus, Antz has more action music and better themes.

The two scores are so incredibly different, it's hard to compare them...

A Bug's Life is much more traditional. It has some okay action cues, and I really like the main theme. It's very catchy and pretty charming.

Antz is much different, and pretty hard to describe. Think of Zimmer's action music and then try to imagine it melded with big band or swing, with some techno to back it up... it is very odd, but very, very good. It's also a lot more humorous than Newman's score in many places.

If you must choose only one, then get Antz, but if you don't mind getting both then do so.

I highly recommend ANTZ. It rates a 4 out of 5 stars, because of it's clever compositions, sheer genius and fun. It's Zimmer very subdued with a twist. (Ever thought what THE ROCK might sound like if it was a fun comediatic movie and the main characters were bugs?) Goes to think, doesn't it. It changes musical color and tempo so often but has moments to spare reintroducing the main ANTZ-theme.

Unless you're on a budget, get both. But, rest assured, in a years time you won't play either of them. Antz is noise and A Bug's Life is prettier noise.

Looks like we have mixed reviews here, and personally I think its not really helping Alwin.

I have A Bug's Life but not Antz. So I can't say much, but watch the two on video and compare the music for yourself. Remember... 'One man's meat is another man's poison'...

My strongest recommendation to the fellow is to spend his money on worthier scores or, if he must, purchase them used since neither is worth full price.

"A Bug's Life" is an adequate musical effort and a competent score. Beyond that, there's nothing really outstanding about this CD. You may be enchanted enough with the themes to justify buying it, but I wasn't. It *certainly* shouldn't have won the grammy over "Phantom Menace."

"Antz" on the other hand is just eccentric enough to remain interesting. I still listen to it moderately often, and I've had the disc for well over a year. Compositionally superficial, the score makes up for this deficiency with a number of infectious themes and some impressively creative scoring. It's great fun, and I can safely say that there's nothing like it in my collection; a unique listen every time, which is more than I could say for "A Bug's Life."

That, of course, is just my 2 cents. I recommend you rent the movies (both of which are worth watching -- though "Antz" is more inspired) and see what you think. In addition, you can probably find sound clips at amazon.com and cdnow.com

I think both scores are worth getting. I love the way Bug's Life sounds like a western score.

I agree with Audacity, get both scores. On the whole, I think I like ANTZ better because it does have more action cues. Also, I love the use of Guantanamera in the cue for the bar scene. But Bug's Life also has some good stuff. My favorite cue from Bug's Life is still "The Flik Machine".

Just watched Bug's Life again last night and still love it. Haven't heard Antz so I can't say.
