Sho nuf like a mug.
In fact I would like the whole treatment with alternate cues if any exist. This was recorded in the UK so it stands a good chance that this could become a reality some day. I know there's expanded boot with mediocre sound but somebody oughtta give us all the goods on a legit release. Intrada are you listening?[This message has been edited by HAL 2000 (edited 10 March 2000).]

I WANT TOO!!!Why the complete score wasn't released yet is beyond me... What's their excuse in TOTAL RECALL? It was performed by the Nation Philarmonic Orchestra of LONDON, right? So they can say it was because of the terrible re-uses fees, or whatever it is called...
Someone, please!! Help us....

Is the normal release still worth buying? I see it occasionally and have been considering picking it up anyway.

Dantoris! It's only the most innovative action score of the 90s!The expanded version leaves off a few choice score moments, such as Quaid (or is it Hauser.....?) seeing Mars for the first time (the big cymbal crashes and such), and the "Two Weeks" cue, which would have been nice. The version I have has really good sound. Slight hiss, but it's leagues above the horrible-sounding version that was out before.

Earth, last time I checked.
I know the music is great. I was just wondering if it was well-represented on the Varese release before I bought it.[This message has been edited by dantoris (edited 10 March 2000).]

The Varese release is fine, and not UN-representative, but isn't there a gigantic expanded bootleg out there?I was told that another label packaged the original deal to release TOTAL RECALL, and that disc would've run an hour, but Varese bought it out from under them for twice the fee the other label was able to pay, and then, to compensate for the amount of cash lost in that deal, forewent the extra fees for extra music. This is only what I was told. It was ultimately worth it to Varese, I understand, it was one of their bigger sellers in the last decade.
Having listened to that edition for nearly ten years now, I'm more than ready for the alleged expanded boot.

I don't know about you, but the regular release is fine by me. I especially love "The Dream", "The Mutant" and perhaps one of the all-time greatest finale cues in a film score, "A New Life".

Dantoris, get it! GET IT! G E T I T !!!!I just wanted to create a similar thread, as I thought about the score being recorded by the NSO and why it hasn't had an expanded official release yet. You were faster, Hector.

But WHY hasn't there been a more complete release? The score seems to be regarded as one of Jerry's best (which it IS), and there are no re-ues fees. It should be a good deal for any record company to release it.

Is the Varese release still pretty easy to find in most stores? I saw it occasionally when I was relatively new to score collecting (before I had seen the movie and before I really got into scores). I will grab it next time I see, but I'd just like to know what my chances are of actually finding it in the stores now that I want it.

dantorisThe Varese cd of Goldsmith's TOTAL RECALL is still readily available. I'm sure they'll have it at Amazon.
What can I add to what everyone has said about this fantastic score? Despite the omission of plenty of great material, the official release is a 'must have'.

Any New York record store with a halfway decent soundtrack session is going to have TOTAL RECALL, suggesting it's still in print. If so, Intrada should have it. Varese might even sell it, though I've never taken a close look at their back-catalog. How well did the album sell? Goldsmith addresses that when he performs the RAMBO/TOTAL RECALL medley in concert: "Rambo bought my house," he deadpans; "Arnold remodeled it."One thing about the profusion of bootleg CDs -- now that there's a giant RECALL boot, that all the fans are going to snap up one way or another, sooner or later -- any record company is going to realize that only the real collector-FANATICS are going to want to own an "official" release as well. Hence it might not be worth the plunge. If the bootleggers had been quicker to run off RAMBO II, for example, I doubt we'd have seen the Silva release.
There have been exceptions to this -- the BLADE RUNNER boot, for example, wasn't widely known or distributed, and this was before CDRs became such a household item (I never even heard of CDRs until a couple of years ago, and they didn't exist in such volume then). The official release probably sells well.
On the other hand, I'm told that the official release is MISSING music that the bootleg has, and inserts a bit or two of dialogue to boot (although it wasn't terribly intrusive, as dialogue overtracks go).
Some other time I mean to compose a larger essay about the implications of DVD, isolated scores, and the CDR -- the market is already changing dramatically, and even a year from now is going to look very different. I do not have time at present to put together all my better thoughts on the subject.

H Rocco: A very amusing anecdote.I'd like to say a few words about the theme.
It is a wonderful theme, but, unlike so many movie themes, it just can't survive outside of the soundtrack. A complex work of beauty highlighting horns, strings and electronics, it doesn't help that the theme is placed on a number of soundtrack compilations where the electronics are:- unnessecarily augmented(The Great Fantasy Adventure Album - Telarc), or
- stripped away(Frontiers - Varese)In essence, the theme is becoming not unlike that scene in the first SUPERMAN, where he was fitted with that striking Kryptonite necklace.

I *COMPLETELY* AGREE that the TOTAL RECALL main title doesn't work outside the OST version. The "Frontiers" version (which is the same one he performs in concert) is just not very interesting, and I don't like listening to it. Goldsmith got it absolutely right the first time, and it's one of those pieces that is as much made in the mixing room as on the studio floor. The TOTAL RECALL theme's debt to CONAN THE BARBARIAN is obvious and probably intended, but am I the only one who thinks he also slipped in a bit of a reference to Brad Fiedel's TERMINATOR theme?

I don't like Goldsmith's score for Total Recall. It just sounds like a lot of synth to me. The Main Title and Finale are very good. The movie and the rest of the score isn't very interesting to me.Hey SBD? What was wrong with the expanded Supergirl? I want that score because the Main Title is so good but I really need to see the movie first! I have listened to clips from every track of the Silva disk and they all sound very good!

I guess to answer his question, Silva's Supergirl added back in all of the synths that Goldsmith had originally intended, resulting in complete overload. Get both versions and compare. See, THAT's how you get 'em to buy BOTH versions!Shaun

Up until Silva's Supergirl release I had been listening to the Varese version since it first went on the market and, having gotten exceptionally used to it, my reaction to the synths was immediately negative, particularly in "The Monster Storm". But, you know what, after repeated comparisons I came to the conclusion that the Varese version sounded awfully naked and I ended up selling off the Varese.

Hey, any one have the track titles for the expanded release? BTW My `unreleased` tracks sound muffled. Is there a better version of it out there? There are definitely a lot of good music missing from the varese releaseNP-The Red Violin (John Corigliano)
