having just gotten finished reading the book, I am hoping so much to see this movie done right, and I immediately wanted to know who was scoring it. I found the name Elia Cmiral at imdb.com. Having never seen Stigmata, or Ronin, is this person's work any good?

Haven't seen STIGMATA, but I enjoyed his work in RONIN very much. I'm eager to hear what he'll do with such a big action movie as BATTLEFIELD EARTH. It may be the big break this huge talent is waiting for.

For a (short) sample of his music (a television theme) click here. You'll find it near the bottom of the page. Let me know what you think.

Apparently, this film has been a pet project of Travolta's for several years. I believe at one point he was just going to produce it (being a big fan of the novel), but then ended up starring in it, for reasons unknown.

Maybe it's just me.... but Dantoris, that audio clip wasn't very impressive... IMO, of course.

Hmm, I can hear that sort of music being used in BE, but I sure hope that he goes quite a bit beyond that. We'll just have to wait till the movie comes out I guess.

    Dawk.

P.S. By the way, it was really cool the way they worked Davis' Matrix score into the trailer.

I've always avoided anything written by L. Ron Hubbard because of his Church of Scientology evangelizing, so I don't know anything about the story.
I saw some great-looking clips on ET the other night, and it looks like it could be a really good film.

    Chris,

Battlefield was written well before L. Ron ever thought of Scientology as far as I know, so don't hold that against him.

The only problem is that Battlefield Earth cannot be made into a movie. It will be slaughtered by John Travolta...

Dawk - That short theme is probably a better example of the music in RONIN, which was similar, though with a duduk (sp?) instead of a pan pipe. I'm sure his music for BATTLEFIELD EARTH will be quite different, and I can't wait to hear it. Cmiral could quickly become one of my next favorite composers.

DjC - I suppose that is possible, but Travolta has said how highly he thinks of the book and wanted to capture as of it as possible.

Haven't seen any trailers or clips, but just from the poster I saw in the theater lobby, I'll be there when it opens.

Do not get me wrong, i will see it too, but i am afraid that a book as huge as B.E. can not be made into a movie...wel'll see, one complaint i have from watching the preview is that the main bad guy(travolta) looks human, when in the book, the bad guys are anything but human. ah well

Geez - I must be way off! Johnny boy's a bad guy? I haven't read the book, but I was under the impression he was the character leading the rebellion against invading aliens. Is that what the story's about at least?

Travolta is the bad guy. Barry Pepper plays the good guy .
as far as DJC saying that the book is too big to make into a movie.. I'd normally agree, but it's been reported that they're filming only PART of the book, and that there will be sequels. As for Travolta's look.. You must not've read the part where LRH describes the Psychlo face which looks a lot like a human except for there is bone instead of muscle. The main complaint that I had is that John Travolta was speaking english in the trailer.. and a lot of the book focused on the different languages.. But I'll just have to see how they pulled it off.

Actually, FYI, Battlefield Earth is a later book rather than an earlier one; when it was published in the 80's, it was billed as Hubbard's return to SF, after his semi-retirement for Scientology, several decades after his rather crude pulp career in the 40's and 50's.

Hubbard's work is so flamboyantly crazy, and this Travolta thing such a manifest vanity project (hey, he's a STAR, just GIVE him a hundred million K), that I actually can't WAIT to see it. It is likely to become the most memorable flop in MANY a year.

When I lived in Los Angeles, I discovered that in the early afternoons, parking right next to the Scientology Celebrity Center was excellent, and free. I could browse at length at the used book/CD store a quarter-block to the north, not to mention the well-appointed deli, curious magazine center, and when I was done shopping there, I could hang out at perhaps the worst Chinese restaurant in the whole miserable city. Bliss!

Drive far enough southwest of there, and you'll run into another Scientology mall, which has a more-or-less continuous digital-sign come on: "Walk on in and take our FREE test!" I was so bored some days that I nearly did it, but I was worried they'd figure out where I lived or something.

Good Lord, you don't suppose Elia Cmiral is also one of them ...

Yes, this movie is only the first half of the book. A very, VERY rough cut of it was screened for the WB suits back in December, and they gave the OK to make the 2nd half. Travolta and company will start filming next summer up in Canada (where most of this was filmed).
Travolta said that if he had made the film back in the 80's, he would have played Jonnie Goodboy Tyler (hero). But he said that now, he couldn't see himself running around without a shirt and long hair in the shape that he's in now. (a little chunky)

Did anybody catch who did the voice-over in the trailer? Was it the last thing he did?

I'm eagerly anticipating this film and the score. I agree with Dantoris, I think it will be Cmiral's big break.

    NP-ID4 (couldn't resist)

Did anyone see the new longer trailer attached to The Ninth Gate??? Damn that looks cool.

    Dawk.

P.S. what's the music used in the second half of the trailer? it sounds a lot like the music from the X-Files: FTF trailer.
