I've been listening to this Max Steiner gem today. I finally got the German boot. The sound quality is excellent. So is the score.

This got me to thinking about other scores I like with a maritime theme:

    CAPTAIN HORATIO HORNBLOWER - R. Farnon (!)
DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS - A. Newman
LONG JOHN SILVER - D. Buttolph
    BUCCANEER -- E. Bernstein
    SEA HAWK -- E. Korngold

Anybody want to add to this list?

I also need to add the 'new' Moby Dick' to this list, the one that was made for TV. Christopher Gordon (whoever the heck he is) composed an awesome score for that film.

Don't forget Max Steiner's rousing and nautically cool "The Caine Mutiny".

Never released and owner of the title "Rarest score in Existance!" Wish Marco Polo would re-record this one.

A limited edition (read boot) of THE CAINE MUTINY (RCA LOC-1013) was put out about six years ago. I have one. It has a full-color front cover, back cover, and original RCA green label. It is virtually indistinguishable from an original. There were two skips on the original that this was copied from and these were copied over as well--so I'm told; I've never played it.

The CAINE march is readily available on Gerhardt's CASABLANCA/HUMPHREY BOGART compilation, but you knew that.

It's also available on a Silva Steiner compilation. I can't think of the title offhand, but it's the one that contains ADVENTURES OF MARK TWAIN, a favorite of mine.

I just read a review of that album, containing Steiner's Adventures of Mark Twain and Korngold's Prince and the Pauper (I think John Morgan was involved?). I was very intrigued, to say the least.

Does anyone know through what channel I might be able to get that album? The tidbits of Prince and the Pauper available on the Warner Bros. and Gerhardt compilations are just too tantalizing . . .

The compilation I'm refering to was of Steiner-only music. It was on Silva. I'm not familiar with the one you're talking about.

RCA Red Seal's marvelous MARK TWAIN/PRINCE AND PAUPER album does not contain THE CAINE MUTINY march.

However, it's two stunning scores on one disc. TWAIN incorporates several classic themes (The Marseillase, Hymn of the Republic etc.) into the score, but manages to be uniquely Steiner. Americana flavour.

The superior PRINCE AND PAUPER is a perfect, "english" score in Korngold's ELIZABETH AND ESSEX mode. Especially love the "duel" track - a sparkling scherzo. This disc is a must-have, but I gather that it is somewhat hard to obtain?

It must be. I've not heard of it until now. Is it an RCA Spain release?

No, it's a 1995 disc as part of the Red Seal Series, William Stromberg conducting the Brandenburger Philharmonic: RCA 09026-626660-2

You can read about it here:
