I don't know about this movie anymore as I've read several negative reviews that are far too consistent in identifying the film's shortcomings. Bummer. I have been hoping for a return to more provocative, cerebral sci-fi since the advent of whiz-bang empty headed space operas but it seems nobody can do that. Witness The Abyss, Sphere and Contact. All films that took forever to get to the big moment only to stumble badly in the delivery.Anyway, in the case of MtM even Morricone's score was singled out in one particular review as a minus. To quote, "Visually impressive it might be, DePalma lets himslf down by including an overly obtrusive score by Ennio Morricone who uses music to extract every emotion from some lacklustre dramatic moments. The music is dreadful and hampers DePalma's striking visual approach to narrative." Mama Mia, Ouch!

The same thing was said about Morricone's score to The Thing and Goldsmith's The Mummy, and I sure didn't agree with that. I'm still looking forward to this film and score.

I hope thats not true! I've been loking foward to this for a long time now. Remember those reviews are based on opinon. Personally I loved "Contact" both movie and score. "Sphere" was a great movie if you had not read the book. Even though some reviews are coming out bad, a lot of people don't like DePalma's movies that much. I lived "Snake Eyes" and "Mission Impossable" was a good watch.Even though some are saying the movie's going to be bad, I'm still looking foward to it. I love sci fi movies and this one looks right up my alley

PS: I also can't wait tell the re-release of "2001" with new footage!

I hope it's good too. On the other hand, I have come to realize that these kinds of movies are VERY difficult to pull off, especially when high concept sci-fi movies give studios the willies. I haven't seen a Science Fiction film about extraterrestrial contact where the actual encounter was as "wonderful" as the film built you up for since Close Encounters. Remember the movie version of 2010 where astronaut Bowman kept saying "something wonnnderful" was going to happen and it never really did? So what... Jupiter got an earthlike atmosphere. Clark may have driven home the implications of this in his book but the movie didn't.It just doesn't sound like the makers of MtM have done any better. I'll see for myself when it comes out.

"Mission to Mars" looks like it could either way. It could either be a very big (read: good) movie, or it can just be a really huge disaster. It's hard to tell. Gary Sinise is a great actor, so I'll probably see it.NP: THE PEACEMAKER *****/*****

Technically, in 2010 Europa got the earth-like atmosphere. This was because they (Monolith Aliens) caused Jupiter to collapse in on itself, increasing the internal pressure enough to produce fusion, adding a second sun, thus making Europa warmer. While it may have left you flat in the theatre, if this happened in our world, it would be the single most important event in human history.
First, Jupiter can't do that without help, it's not massive enough. They had to add enough mass to make that happen. This would present proof that can’t be classified that there was extraterrestrial contact.
Second, that additional mass would cause changes to the orbits of the planets and passing comets, thus changing a very stable system. (Think Armageddon for real).
Third, additional light and heat would cause major changes in the outer system, making some of the planets more suitable for colonization.
You know, I am not sure that wonderful is the right adjective. Maybe catastrophic would be a better choice.

Great comments MW and I think you got my point. It was never clear how this would set mankind straight especially in view of the escalating national tensions that were the backdrop of the story.I recently saw The Day the Earth Stood Still again on TV. That movie's effectiveness lied not in the impact of the meeting itself (a mistake of too many ET movies) but in what the advanced intelligence had to say (which was hardly psuedo-religious warm and fuzzies). A very poigniat film.

I agree with the above comments regarding reviews...The Mummy was LAMBASTED and I think it was one of the best of the year...go figure...I am sincerely looking forward to Morricone's score and the film.NP - Debussy's Cat (Jeremy Soule)

Anybody dumb enough to get a job reviewing movies deserves to have their #$%^$ kicked anyway since it's an immediate sign of failure to humanity.

Yes, read SPHERE the book!Despite the film's haunting sets and great cinematography/editing, much of the film's production was rushed, leaving the plot, charactors, and especially the ending very hollow. Read the book, it's infinitely better.
Oh, and Mission to Mars looks bad, heh. I'm getting that unoriginal-wannabe vibe off of the trailers. I've lost all faith in the US movie mainstream to come out with truely thoughtful science fiction.
"Contact" was good though, hehe...

For that matter, read all of Crichten's books for they are all infinitely better than their corresponding movies (and I love JP, TLW, and 13th Warrior!) He is a great author!

SPHERE the novel was a great read with a cool "THE END?" finish. I have pretty much ignored the movie. As to M2M, the trailer and tv ads look pretty cool, but I am not expecting much. I mean look at the time when they are releasing it. In the Spring when the competition is pretty darn light, movie-wise.
There's an interview with the film's producer in the new issue of Starlog which is pretty fawning. Some nifty stills and preproduction
art, though.
