Check it out guys, great news for us Trek fans. Of course, I'm always very optimistic. I'm sure someone will have something bad to say about it.

Well, of course there is going to be another Star Trek movie. Duh!! That is like saying there is going to be another James Bond movie. It is only natural. And I am not trying to be hard on you either, Jeron.

P.S. I've heard this one is supposed to kick a$$!!!

Looking forward to it. I'm not a Trekkie (or Trekker, whatever they go by now), but I do enjoy the STAR TREK movies. I think it'll be hard for them to top FIRST CONTACT, though. Don't suppose we know who may get scoring duties this time around, hu?

P.S.: I'm all for another one, just as long as it ain't with the DEEP SPACE NINE or (especially) VOYAGER crew. Well, I wouldn't mind them using Seven of Nine in the next film alongside the NEXT GENERATION crew.

I'd really like to see them return to Harve Bennett's old STARFLEET ACADEMY idea ... younger actors playing the younger Kirk, Spock and so on ... Bennett's one mistake was to jump the gun, fans weren't really ready to see the old actors replaced right then, but now in the wake of the TNG movies, I bet they'd accept it. I think it could be a fascinating movie. But Hollywood turf warfare being what it is, Berman will never dust off an idea of Bennett's. Unless he can figure out a way to make it look like his own, which no doubt he can do.

I don't really care who does the score, I just hope I'll like it.

Cool idea, STARFLEET ACADEMY. Where'd you hear about it? Only problem is, it would be just another movie full of talentless WB/UPN kids, and I'm gettin' pretty ***damn tired of those!!

Yep, it can be tough to find great young actors these days. It'd be pretty amazing if they could find youngish ringers for Shatner, Nimoy, De Kelley and so on, wouldn't it? Thing is, I'm sure the talent is OUT THERE, it's just that it often doesn't get CAST for all the wrong reasons. Sometimes it's amazing to me that ANY good talent breaks through, considering the politics involved.

Anyway, Harve Bennett (who cowrote and produced Treks 2 through 5, as well as TV's SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN) hatched STARFLEET ACADEMY around the time of STAR TREK V -- the Original Cast wasn't getting any younger, and he pitched it to Paramount as an alternative not just to the aging actors, but as a means of regenerating the series (and, perhaps, bringing it in for cheaper, since the whole Original Cast kept lobbying for more and more money with each sequel). The precise sequence of events escapes me now -- it's well covered in any of the Trek memoirs available -- but Bennett wound up bounced from the series after STAR TREK V, Nimoy and Nick Meyer delivered THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY (my least favorite until INSURRECTION came along), and then followed the TNG films.

I haven't read the whole outline, but it's much as it sounds: the crew's Starfleet Academy days, when they all first hooked up (I'd hope for a reprise of the Kobayashi Maru motif.) I think Bennett also proposed it as a TV series, which would be interesting as well, though the Trek "look" has changed so dramatically in recent years that a throwback to what the Academy ought to have looked like back then, however charming, would probably be unacceptable for the mass market.

In the article mentioned above, Rick Berman is bemoaning the low ratings of Voyager to the proliferation of the many networks and cable channels. Maybe the new Star Trek series needs a gimmick to spice it up and bring the viewers back. How about:

"Who Wants To Marry A Star Trek Character?"

"Mystery Star Trek character chooses from among 50 contestants (there can be two versions, one with men and one with women) to marry them, then leave on a two week honeymoon on Risa."

Of course, the mystery Star Trek character ends up being the third extra on the left in episode 27 where Capt. Picard starts a intergalactic war by grabbing the Ferengi Grand Nagus by the ears.

Yes Jeron someone does have something bad to say about it. I wish Rick Berman would just do the right thing regarding Star Trek and step down.

His namb-pamby, love child influence on the whole franchise has drained all attitude and imagination from something I once loved. Insurrection left such a bad taste in my mouth that it is the ONLY Trek film that I have not bothered to see again in any form. I own all the previous ones on video (even Final Frontier) but that film remains a bad memory. It is telling that it was plagued the most by Bermanisms.

No more squishy plotlines, no more aliens with mishapen, knotty foreheads, no more bland characters, no more cop-out story resolutions. It's time for a change.

And if there is going another series I haven't heard a better proposal than Star Trek:Excelcior with Sulu as captain... now that would be a show.

You do all realize that if an new series does get released, it most likely will be at the same time of TNG, DS9 and Voyager, not the classic series.

As for Starfleet Academy, I have heard that is the title for the next show, however it would be as I said above.

As for the next movie, I hope it includes more than just the TNG cast, preferably cast from all 3 spin-offs.

And to keep this somewhat on-topic, am I alone to think David Newman would be perfect for composing an Star Trek movie score, if Jerry Goldsmith were to ever pass the film? After hearing Galaxy Quest I sure think he would be an excellent choice.

    Regards,
    Sean Robert Abbey

As far as I know, Goldsmith has two more Star Trek movies left in an agreement he made.

I am 100% with HAL 2000 on the potential of a series featuring Captain Sulu and the Excelsior. I have thought thought for about the last nine years or so, after the release of UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY. Good call, man: too bad it'll never happen.

Also in perfect agreement with the views on Rick Berman's tenure as shepherd for this franchise. While there HAS been some quality product, his egotistical need to distance himself from What Came Before (read almost any interview with him since about 1992) has lead to lots of errors in an established "history" that the fans DO pay attention to. I can understand the desire to see one's work stand on its own merits; I just cannot understand the compulsion to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Frankly, Rick, the franchise existed because of talent and love for a LONG time before you beamed aboard.....

The refusal to steep in ST lore and plot has also led to not a little bit of author/screenwriter intrusion, which I reject reflexively.....

All of that notwithstanding, I am excited about the prospects for a new movie. Always will be. Let's just hope that it is well written, shot, scored, and performed. Also that if characters die, that some sense and/or nobility will surround same. The film makers need to understand that this (like it or not) is Iconography. I pray that they have respect for the audiences who have Made It So.
