Has anyone else noticed the strange little digital sound that occurs in Disc 1, Track 1 (approx. at 2 min 13 sec.) on the new 2CD Superman set? I'm hoping that it's just mine and I can exchange it.Also if you listen to the Flying Sequence (Disc 2, Track 4) you can hear the alternate seventies music underneath the orchestral music. Right when the "Can you read my Mind?" sequence starts and Margo Kidder would normally start speaking you can hear the synth music very faintly. You can also hear it near the end of that sequence.

KyleS,
I'm really glad that you brought this up. I thought I was just crazy. There is also a really odd problem in "The Big Rescue". It's almost as if it was recorded on a bad tape, because you can hear a little "blub, blub" kind of sound. Anyway, it's there. It's too bad that the LSO didn't have the best recording techniques (and it's also too bad that many studios are letting great scores rot away) in the late 70s.Shaun

There doesn't seem to be any strange little digital sound on my cd. It just fine.As for "The Big Rescue", I only hear a little crackle and that is only during the quiet part and only lasts for a couple of seconds. But that is just expected when you are dealing with something that was recorded back in the 70's. Oh well, the soundtrack still rocks.

Superman was a poor recording, at least compared to Star Wars and The Fury.

Hmmm... I have not yeard heard the new Superman CD, but it seems to me that
a) either they have not remastered the CD from the original recording tapes but some second or third generation master tape or
b) the original tapes have been rotting along in a WB garage.Certainly, in the late seventies they had the recording techniques to get some impressive results. This is clearly evident if you listen to classical recordings the London Symphony made at around the same time. Of course, classical labels such as Deutsche Grammophon or EMI really take care of their inventory, and their recording tapes are stored dust and heat free in especially humidified archives. At least they are aware of the treasures they got... movie studios generally just don't care.

"The Fury" is a re-recording done by Williams when he still had sessions left after completing the "Superman" recording, so I'd guess the recording equipment was the same?

According to the people who worked on Superman, the recording wasn't the best.I suppose they used different techniques for The Fury.
The RAW scoring sessions for Superman have Disappeared. So, the 6 track masters was used and in some cases 2 track and album masters. I think they did a terrific job.
I wish the film producers saved the RAW TAPES!!!!!!!!I'm glad Pinewood kept the Superman 6 track.
I think Superman sounds more consistent than A New Hope.

Well, I don't really want to, but I'm not sure if I can stand not knowing for sure. I'll probably end up going out and buying a brand new one and opening it up just to hear if it has that same problem. Damn!I listen to music most of the day here at work using head phones. The drawback of this is that you end up hearing every little nuance and mistake.

Overall, the sound quality is better than I expected--in fact, it's great--given all I had heard about the quality of the original recording and the condition of the tapes Rhino had to work with. There is some minor distortion in a few places and what sounds like a momentary drop at the start of THE BIG RESCUE. But what we've got is all we're every going to get and I have no complaints.
Eric Tomlinson was the recording engineer for my favorite Barry score, ZULU. Ember Records remixed the life out of the score when they created a mono master for soundtrack release. So getting the original tracks is not always a guarantee you're getting the best quality release. I'd like to see a fresh remix of ZULU if the session tapes still exist.

The first Superman I bought wouldn't play in my player. I returned it and got another that played. I noticed a little skip on the last track of disk 2 at about 23 seconds. Did anyone notice that?
