(No, this is not the Fenton score)

Varase Sarabande will be releasing Bernard Herrmannīs original score to "Anna & the King of Siam" on February 29th. The cd will most likely feature the complete score in stereo although I am not intirely sure. This is the first official release of this score. So far it has only been avalible on a bootleg from Soundtrack Library.

It is also mentioned that the new "Anna" disc will have a few "surprises"...

    Canīt wait!

I'll be at the store on Tuesday evening (assuming I get off work at a humane hour) to buy my copy.

It's been wonderful to see the list of (legitimately) unavailable Herrmann scores steadily dwindle over the last couple of years. When even King of the Khyber Rifles gets an OST release, you know that our little submarket is making its demand muscle felt (if just in tiny ways). I bet that White Witch Doctor won't be far behind!

SFT: I noticed you liked Night Digger. I do also--the harmonica adds a really special effect. I prefer Sisters and Obsession from the same period, however . . . I don't have the slightest interest in seeing the movie, though--but that goes for any number of Herrmann's other pictures (one thinks of It's Alive, in pain).

Iīm currently looking for SISTERS myself...any good advise as to where I can find it?

Iīve actually been told by many people that NIGHT DIGGER is terribly underrated and actually an excellent film. The only reason so few people know about it, is that it got a rather limited release (Only the UK and parts of the US, I belive) and that it has NEVER been released in any format at all, not even VHS.
Iīm keeping my eyes open for it on the telly though.

Actually like The Night Digger (aka The Road Builder). I saw it on TNT a few years back. I understand that Herrmann didn't like the ending but I do. Also, I think this score is absolutely wonderful.

I think it's great we're seeing an Anna CD--It's amazing but it seems as if they're turning over stones to find Herrmann to issue. Soon, I hope every Herrmann film and a lot of his TV and Radio music will be represented with a recording of some kind.

Note: The commercial CD of THE NIGHT DIGGER is not the same as the film soundtrack. I don't know HOW different they are, but the studio tapes (had em, but they were destroyed accidentally before I could listen) are regarded as an interesting contrast to the Label X version. (Is it Label X? Or Southern Cross or whatever they're calling themselves this week. JOHN LASHER, awright? He's behind em all!)

NP: EXCALIBUR (Trevor Jones, Richard Wagner, Carl Orff)

I had to get Sisters on LP, via Ebay. It's wonderful--but seems short.

I actually have a Pearl CD release of Orson Welles's Macbeth radio program, with Herrmann's underscore included. Unfortunately, it's almost inaudible, and completely buried by the dialogue; I haven't yet listened to it completely. How much of Herrmann's other radio music remains in any kind of rescuable form?

    NP: Krull (expanded)
