AMERICAN PSYCHO SCORED BY VELVET UNDERGROUND'S CALE

The soundtrack to the forthcoming film American Psycho, based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, will feature a score by former Velvet Underground bassist and keyboardist John Cale, as well as newly remixed music by David Bowie and the Cure, period music from the 1980s and more.

Cale's score on the soundtrack, due out on April 4 on Koch Records, is actually credited both to Cale and the film's lead character, Patrick Bateman, who is portrayed by actor Christian Bale (Velvet Goldmine, A Midsummer Night's Dream). On the three tracks included on the release, Bale recites monologues over Cale's musical compositions.

The set also features the Cure's "Watching Me Fall" from the band's just-released album Bloodflowers, remixed by Massive Attack's Underdog. An "American Psycho Remix" of David Bowie's "Something in the Air," from his most recent album ... hours is also included.

The soundtrack also includes a collaboration between ex-Bauhaus/ex-Love and Rockets guitarist Daniel Ash and Portishead's Adrian Utley ("Trouble"), as well as period music from the Tom Tom Club, New Order, M/A/R/R/S, Information Society, and Huey Lewis & the News.

Set in the self-indulgent late-eighties New York City club scene, Bale plays a young urban professional living a double life as a serial killer. The Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol) -directed film also features Willem Dafoe (Affliction, Clear and Present Danger), Jared Leto (My So Called Life, Girl, Interrupted), Chloë Sevigny (Boys Don't Cry, Kids), and Reese Witherspoon (Pleasantville, Cruel Intentions). Opening on April 14, American Psycho currently carries an NC-17 rating, although representatives of Lion's Gate Films have said that much of the graphic violence described in the novel was toned down for the film. Too bad Elfman didn´t get to score it. He could have done something spectacular. Anyway, I´m really looking forward to this film...the book was...well, interesting. Let´s hope the movie does well.

Damnit! Another one of those song-laden compilations that don't serve any other purpose than to sell. And Cale? What is this trend with rock artists pretending to be proper film composers, when they've got no talent for the idiom (often called "The Ry Cooder Effect")?

I am saddened to learn that Elfman has left the project (as I'm gathering the above info is confirmed and official). The quirky, dark plot would suit him perfectly.

Indeed, SFT, but they belong to the exceptions. Stewart Copeland is another one. Mark Mothersbaugh a third.

I simply refer to the Grusin's, Cooder's, R. Newman's and Elton John's of this world.

Randy Newman is wonderful. I was most pleased to hear him say that AWAKENINGS was his favorite of his own works. It's mine, too. And the movie just takes my breath away. (Max von Sydow: "Because the alternative is unthinkable." It is criminal that Penny Marshall was not nominated for Best Director, even though it was up for Best Picture. Strange that Newman didn't get a Score nod -- although he WAS up that year for AVALON, which bored me.)
