Back at the FSM board, LogieD used to create a regular thread where we all posted our new scores when we got them. As this was both interesting and fun, I decided to start a similar thread here.

This is what I got recently:
Last week: The Ninth Gate (Kilar)
Today: Angela's Ashes (Williams; Decca). For $3 each: Judge Dredd (Silvestri), Toy Story (Randy Newman), A Fish Called Wanda (Du Prez), Casper (Horner), "Brian de Palma/Pino Donaggio" (Donaggio compilation)

NP: Angela's Ashes (reminds me a bit of Williams' Bassoon Concerto "Five Sacred Trees").

Not too much so far this month...but much more to come.

In the last few weeks (apart from classical acquisitions) I've gotten the following satisfying scores:

    Legend (Goldsmith)
    Dragonheart
    Titus
    Tribute to Korngold
    Marnie (Tsunami release)
    Night Digger

I also got Legend of 1900, but was disappointed . . . But I have Temple of Doom and the 2CD Krull release being shipped to me, as well as Ebay acquisitions of Shipwrecked and Into the West--generating loads of anticipation.

I usually avoid these threads because I'm usually too broke to have gotten anything, except the occasional freebie. (And I've gotten quite a few of those lately, too. Lucky boy.)

FLIM FLAM MAN/A GIRL NAMED SOONER (nice, and it turns out there's LOTS of great FLIM-FLAM music that wasn't on the SPFM tribute)

BICENTENNIAL MAN (decent, heard it all before though)

ANNA AND THE KING (some good patches)

TITUS (superb! Where's its Oscar nomination?)

THE OLIVER STONE CONNECTION (2 CDs packed with stuff, only ran me $4! I really mainly wanted it for the interview quotes from Stone himself.)

BEING JOHN MALKOVICH (okay, but Burwell's done way better -- maybe once I see the film I'll appreciate it more)

CLAY PIGEONS (some good songs; it was cheap)

PSYCHO (Elfman/Bartek version) (decent but no reason to have it, the McNeely version is just as good and also includes ALL the music)

A CIVIL ACTION (fine, somewhat Thomas Newmanish)

INDECENT PROPOSAL (typical John Barry tune, not one of his more engrossing, but for $3, I was willing to roll the dice)

FREEDOM SONG (only $4 but I thought there was going to be at least SOME SCORE music on this ... )

DESTROY THE MONSTERS (hard-rock covers of various Godzilla themes -- it's growing on me)

SYMPHONIC FANTASIA (1999 issue of a 1995 rerecording of the Ifukube trilogy of concert versions of some of his fantasy themes -- probably a better rendition than the 1983 live recording, arguably better than the version Masaru Sato conducted in 1993, but that was perfectly all right)

GODZILLA (1998, only bought it for "Come With Me," was waiting for it to get cheap enough to justify it in my mind)

Someone wanted to send me ENTER THE DRAGON, but I ain't seen a sign of it yet ... perhaps the whole offer was a mirage ... And come to think of it, where's my SUPERMAN? Patience, patience ...

    NP: THE VANISHING (Goldsmith)

These are from a month ago...

    THE ELEPHANT MAN
    John Morris

    KRULL
    James Horner

    THE FURY
    John Williams

    T-REX: BACK TO CRETACEOUS
    William Ross

These are from the past couple of weeks...

    THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY
    Gabriel Yared

    TARAS BULBA and
FRANZ WAXMAN: LEGENDS FROM HOLLYWOOD VOL. 1
    Franz Waxman

    THE SONG OF BERNADETTE
    Alfred Newman

Today, I picked up Danny Elfman's fantastic score to A SIMPLE PLAN. One of his best, I think. Cliche time! Terrific in every sense of the word! I was planning on getting Thomas Newman's very good score to THE GREEN MILE, but none were in, so I finally bought A SIMPLE PLAN. As great as I remember it in the film. Too bad not more of Elfman's music was included on the album.

    Awaiting Decca's ANGELA'S ASHES.

A SIMPLE PLAN is AWESOME ... but are you sure there's much more in the film? It was a relatively sparse piece of work, it seemed to me.

I'd only buy THE GREEN MILE for very cheap -- I loved the movie, but the score could have been stronger -- but I WOULD want it for the mouse theme.

I didn't like the Being John Malkovich score until I saw the film. It's quasi-Beethoven (first of all, I really wanted to use quasi- as a prefix to a composer's name; I think it fits here---the piano theme in BJM sounds like "Moonlight") piano theme is actually quite sad in a strange little way. Odd film that I'll probably enjoy more once I see it in a place that isn't a Cafe Theatre (stay away from the W.C. Fields is all I have to say!).

A Simple Plan was missing one important cue that everybody seemed to love but me. It's the "Bill Paxton rides the snowmobile" music. It's good, but it's nothing to freak out about, people. There's still great stuff to be had on the album, particularly "Tracks In The Snow".

Hey JJ! I was just listening to U-Turn the other day and wondering why this wasn't a huge huge hit of a score. Every single track of the score is brilliantly "off". I love the moment where the "Goofy Bass Theme" returns at the climax of "End Of Sheriff".

Damn I love being an American right now! Where's my stoic trumpet theme? Hey? Morrison, where art thou? Well, the feeling has subsided. What a terrible country we live in. OK, it's back! Damnit, McNab, where are you when a good ol' American needs a distant trumpet solo to back 'im up? Ah, forget it! I guess I'll go upstairs to a Herrmann "Dirge".

Extremely excited at the prospect of sleep,
    Shaun

NP---The voices in my head! Oh, these blasted voices! Shut it! Shut your mouths, all of you up there! I can't take it any longer (sound of head being mashed into a drawer).......evil devil head voices! Take that!

    Ugh.

Jesus Christ! Some of you must have really fat wallets! I remember deepbluesea over at FSM who used to get in at least 10-15 rare discs per week. God knows how...

Anyway, here's what I've got these last few weeks:

    MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (Elfman)
An interesting score, Elfman's first foray into his "new sound". Cool 70's percussion.

    EXTREME MEASURES (Elfman)
Slow and foreboding thriller score. Only the last track really goes somewhere.

    SLEEPY HOLLOW (Elfman):
Somewhat disappointed initally, but it really grows on you. Loud and unmelodious, yet intriguingly complex.

    PSYCHO (Herrmann/Elfman):
No Herrmann fan, but I recognize this score's greatness. Best interpretation since the original.

    ANGELA'S ASHES (Williams):
Superb score incorporating the religious sound I love so much.

LOST IN SPACE, VOL. 3 (Williams et. al.):
Very herrmannesque. Once again, it needs to grow on you.

    THE PLAYER (Newman):
Highly original, with great orchestrations. Precursor to things like AMERICAN BEAUTY and RED CORNER.

    STAR TREK: INSURRECTION (Goldsmith):
Not the best in the franchise, but a nice romantic theme coupled with basic, mediocre action writing.

    Mr. InSanDiego (or anyone!),

is there any actual SCORE on FREEDOM SONG, or is the whole thing gospel? And which bits did Horner actually work on? (The $4 disc I bought does not have a booklet, hence my weird question.)

NP: FRANKENSTEIN VS. THE SUBTERRANEAN MONSTER BARAGON (Akira Ifukube, although in a second the disc's going to shift into Alternate Takes on various of his main titles) (it's interesting hearing them, but he's always right when he does the final takes -- somehow the BIGNESS he intended does not automatically come across. Revisions and improvements can be as simple as an additional bang on the piano.)

H Rocco, Shaun's comment about Paxton riding the snowmobile cue was primarily the piece I was talking about (though reading through my comments again, it almost sounded like I was implying the score ran 90 minutes... ) True, as excellent as the album is with the music that's on there, I thought that one cue could have further enhanced its already considerable appeal. Still, I'm not complaining.

I'd really have to watch the film again to hear if there was anything else that was worthy of release on the album.

    I believe tracks 1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 14 and 17 are Horner compositions.

    Sweet Honey in the Rock is responsible for tracks 2, 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 15 and 16.

Bertha Gober composed track 11 and track 18 is a Carole King contribution.

    Hope this helps.

I may be a little behind; in the last month or so, I gotten these:

    The Matrix (Don Davis)
    Princess Mononoke (Joe Hisaishi)
Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (Randy Edelman)
    Superman-Expanded Original (John Williams)
The Secret of NIMH (Jerry Goldsmith)
    Cutthroat Island (John Debney)

I'm going to try to get that Galaxy Quest promo before too long, as well.

Rocco, The Hurricane is the same as the academy promo cd that was issued with all 51mins. of Young's score. Brilliant, brillant. And Payback's is longer by 20 minutes and has music that's not on the Varese cd. Definetly worth getting if you ever come across it.

I like Hurricane, but I think Murder in the First is the better score by far, in my opinion.

NP -- Matrix, sort of complete

deepbluesea aka Hard Target: I KNEW it was you immediately upon reading your long list of recent aquisitions. I still don't understand how you get to these things, much less how you can afford them or even listen them to all before new ones arrive. Most impressive indeed!
