    3) John Hurt giving birth to an ALIEN

    4) Gerard Depardieu finaly understanding that his fate was more than just A SIMPLE FORMALITY

    5) Toto witnessing the destruction of his beloved CINEMA PARADISO

    6) Jeff Goldblun dissolving John Getz's leg with THE FLY gruesome acid vomit!

    7) Michael Palin trying to make John Cleese and the other Roman guards to expose themselves while he mention his friend's Biggus Dickus name in LIFE OF BRIAN

    8) Cap. Kirk destructing the Enterprise on TREK III

    9) Cap. Kirk's son, David D. Bore, being killed by a very nasty Klingon in TREK III

    Hiya, H Rocco!

I loved MAGNOLIA too, guys. The frog thing is an amazement. I haven't really read any reviews about the movie yet, but I know some folks are gonna pick on one of my very favorite moments from it -- all of the cast getting a turn at singing that UNBELIEVABLY sad song (Aimee Mann?). Call me a sucker: for once at the movies, I didn't care that the film makers "broke the wall down" with the audience. I cried buckets. Wow.

    How about:

Superman flies through the roof of Luthor's Lair after Ms. Tessmacher frees him of his Kryptonite necklace.

A TIE fighter (wingman to Vader) explodes, and the Millenium Falcon dives down out of the sun to save Luke.

The lights explode in a magic fireworks display to mark the redemption of The Natural.

The starship Enterprise is seen rising slowly from behind/through the "rollbar" of the Reliant.

The simple and brave professor calmly rides an errant crane to the salvation of man, and his own doom, in QUATERMASS AND THE PIT.

Rocky Balboa, beaten and bleeding, motions for Creed to come back for more - and breaks Creed's ribs as the bell sounds.

All over the world, as people crowd churches in search of at least a spiritual salvation, Martian war machines wobble and crash as the invaders are exposed to "the smallest of all God's creations".

The Triffids are led to their demise in salt water by an ice cream truck.

SOOOO many more. What a great thread! Thanks, guys.

Mark, I'm glad to see that there is someone else besides me who finds certain scenes from sci-fi, fantasy and horror films having the capacity to be moving and uplifting, not just, scary, horrifying or repulsive.

How about GORGO, taking her beloved "baby" back to the sea, away from the horror that is humanity. When momma breaks her child out of the circus, and then that Lavagnino music kicks in... I can't help but be moved.

Then there's the end of Hammer's CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF. Achingly sad.

And like you mentioned above, THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. When you add Leith Stevens' music to the scene near the end when Gene Barry and Ann Robinson find each other in the collapsing church, what an unforgettable moment.

And there are so many more.

    1. Episode 1 - Lightsaber duel
    2. The Rock - Finale
    3. TWINE - Opening boat chase

In addition to some of the ones above, the most memorable scenes to me:

    - Lion King (where Simba climbs up to the top of Pride Rock and roars... the music sends shivers down my spine)!

    - I second Segal's death in Executive Decision

    - Meteor shower over NYC in Armageddon
    - Launch sequences in Amrmageddon

That's all I can think of, right now...

Thanks for the kind words, Tom. Now you've done it! A few more from genre films:

The "ark" launches from its mountain railway just before Earth dies, in WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE.

Damien, motally wounded and still defiant, expires in front of the living Christ, in THE FINAL CONFLICT (and oh, the music!).

THE IRON GIANT hurtles toward doom in saving us from ourselves, secure in its knowledge that "Souls never die".

Spock chooses fro the needs of the many over the needs of the few - or the one - in repairing the crippled Enterprise's warp drive. Terrific music and exciting editing make this one of my favorite sequences from ANY of the ST movies.

The Monster, aware that its creation and existence are cursed, allows love and life to flee (but not the evil Praetorious) before ending that same curse, in THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. This is lovingly and movingly referenced again a half-century later in the final moments between Decker and Blatty in BLADE RUNNER.

THE FIFTH ELEMENT is Love; and Love saves the world. Deeply flawed movie with a deeply affecting climax.

And Tom, you are SO right about CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF. Good call, as usual.

    Let's keep this one going!

    NP: AWAKENINGS 5/5* Underrated, IMHO.

Impossible, I will always forget some... But for Andre's dispair, The Alien ship appearence in Close Encounters and also The Abyss (gotcha'ya!)

Lightsaber duel in all Star Wars movies

Head to head fighters in ID4

    Jurassic park first dinossaurs

Ray Park in Sleepy Hollow (the boy sequence)

Clint in the rain , Bridges of Madison County

    E. T. Nothing to add!

Most of these I agree with, but here are a few more. (possible spoilers)

I have to second Mark's IRON GIANT comment. "You are who you choose to be." "Superman..." I almost cried the first time I saw that.

The scene near the end of ALIEN where Ripley is preparing to go into hypersleep and the alien's arm comes out of nowhere makes me jump every time I watch it.

Liam Neeson's "I could have done more" speech in Schindler's List.

Thank you, Sean, for mentioning Gattaca. What a moving and uplifting film! WARNING: MAJOR SPOILER--The part that always gets me is when Anton asks Vincent, "How have you done any of this?" Vincent's reply: "I never saved anything for the swim back!"

King Henry's speech to his men before the Battle of Agincourt in Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of HENRY V. Doyle's music is outstanding.

John Murdoch "remembers" at the climax of DARK CITY, breaking out of his restraints and defeating the Strangers.

Roy Batty's acceptance of his own mortality in BLADE RUNNER is poetically moving. Vangelis' score is perfectly fitting.

Those are just a few, but it should be noted that the music in all of these accentuated the emotion that came out of these scenes (even Alien, although the music came in right after the arm appears). This really is a great thread.

As long as we're mentioning the pathos evident in some of the better horror pictures ... I've rarely seen anything as sad as the finale of AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON. I saw it again on cable a couple of years ago, and the parts that aren't funny or scary (REALLY scary -- the stalking sequences on the Moors and in the London Tube are breathtaking) -- the rest of it is utterly heartbreaking.

    - Jurassic Park: The "Lake scene", right after the sight of the first brontosaurus & "High Wire Stunts"
    - The Fury: Vision sequences & "Gillian's Escape"
    - Much Ado About Nothing: Main Titles
    - Psycho: Shower sequence
    - Star Trek TMP: "The Enterprise"
    - Empire Strikes Back: Vader tells Luke that he is his father
    - Return of the Jedi: Final Luke/Vader duel

And probably many more. Note that all of the above mentioned are perfectly scored.

SLEEPING BEAUTY-Maleficent turning into a dragon (I was lucky to see this on a WIDE screen some years ago, and it blew me away).

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION-The opera, the escape and the finale.

E.T.-Flying across the moon, escape from the agents and the goodbye.

Well, there are far too many to mention, but seeing as most of them are mentioned above, I'll have to mention Batman Returns - the sequence when Chris Walken pushes Michelle Pfeiffer out the window, right through to when she put the Cat Suit on. The bit when she's in the kitchen, & starts destroying everything - the mix of music & visuals sends huge shivers down my spine every time I watch it. Strangely, it comes across as a bit lifeless on the CD...

The Seven Year Itch - Shame on you if you have to ask which scene

The Mask - Cameron Diaz's first scene; just like the Hollywood glamour girls of old, before she got all gross on us(There's Something About Mary, Being John Malkovich)

The Jerk - "The new phone book's here! The new phone book's here!"

And I wholeheartedly agree with the chase in Raising Arizona

    SPOILERS!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers: When Donald Sutherland makes that horrible alien noise at the end of the movie. I have never been so horrified! I felt exactly what Luke Skywalker must have felt when Vader told him he's his father. I nearly started to cry "Noooooooo"!. NO JOKE!

Don't Look Now: When Donald Sutherland is murdered. I'm still afraid when I think of the red-hooded face.

Phantom Menace: Liam Neeson being stabbed is also rather memorable. In my opinion, a really violent scene (the only violent scene in all 4 movies).

NP: Angela's Ashes, "Plenty of Fish and Chips in Heaven" (Williams)... I actually just had fish and chips

I absoloutley love when the 'transformed' Kim Novak in VERTIGO (my favorite movie of all time) walks out of the bathroom into a greenish light. The moment is beautiful, haunting, and sad at the same time.
I also love the dance scene in PULP FICTION I could see that scene over and over again.
Oh yeah, everything from WAITING FOR GUFFMAN

    Here's mine (And I don't give a SH*T about spoilers )

    1) When the Falcon zooms out of that hole in the 2nd Death Star as the fire bursts out around it in "Return of the Jedi." Lando screams "YAAAAAAHOOOOOOO!" Afterwards. That scene is sooooo SLICK!!

    2) When Indy is on the bridge in Indy II (Or Indy I, depending on which version you have), and holds up the sword. He looks to the left, then to the right, and nervously says "Oh ****..."

    3) Fraaankensteeen's monster singing "Puttin' On The Ritz!" on stage with Gene Wilder in "Young Frankenstein".

    4) "The Last Supper" scene in History of the World" Part 1. Leonardo walks in to paint the famous painting and says "OK, if all of you wanna be in `da picture! You all gotta be on the uther side of `da table!"

    5) The scene in the end of Lethal Weapon 4 when Rog rescues Riggs from being crushed underwater.

    6) "The Lord says that he can get me out of this mess, but he's pretty sure, your "f*cked" from Braveheart.

    7) "Are you suggesting coconuts MIGRATE!"
"Not at All, It could be carried!"
"WHAT, a Swallow carring a coconut!"
"It could GRIP it by the HUSK!"
"It's not a question of where he GRIPS it, its a simple matter of weight rations..."
"Look would you PLEASE tell him that Author of Camelot is here!!"
"It could have been carried by an African swollow!"
"An African swollow mabye, but not a european swollow!"
"But then again African Swollow's are Non-migratory!"
"Wait! Supposing TWO Swollow's carried it together!"
"What?! Held under the doursle guiding feathers!"
    "Why not?!........."

Email me if you don't know where THAT's from!!

Hello, I’m new to this Board, another immigrant, and not one to worry about.

    Most Memorable scenes for me.

Alien: When Ripley HEARS the deaths of Veronica Cartwright (her gulping shrieks) and
Yaphet Kotto, leaving her the last human on ship.

Aliens: When Ripley rides down the elevator to rescue the child, donning warrior gear to
    transform into a female Rambo.

Man of a Thousand Faces: When James Cagney, playing Lon Chaney, slowly unravels his
twisted, knarled body to Skinner’s lovely themes.

Cool Hand Luke: When Luke, beaten bloody, staggers into the barracks needing help the
fellow prisoners and cries, “Where are you now?” to his deserting disciples.

When Luke eats 50 eggs, and when the bloodhounds sniff pepper.

First growl from Old Yeller indicating rabies.

Ditto on shower scene from Psycho and the joyous opening credits in Much Ado About
    Nothing, and Magnolia’s raining frogs.

Bonnie and Clyde. First extended blood bath I’d scene. Trillions of machine gun bullets
that form a wall and keep their bodies from falling.

Burmese Harp: When the Japanese and American soldiers simultaneously sing.

All time favorite scene from Terms of Endearment: The second before Winger dies, she
gives her mom that thank you-unconditional love look.

NP Much Ado About Nothing, Doyle ****/*****

Joan, I'd forgotten those things in COOL HAND LUKE, I saw that as a kid when it first came out, and thought it was just about the best movie I ever saw. Viewed it again recently. They really DON'T make'em like that anymore, *sigh*.

I want to see OLD YELLER, but I really think it will upset me too much (I'm not kidding) is it good enough to go though that? You're talking to a kid that could berely handle GREYFRIERS BOBBY, or TOMASINA'S visit to Cat Heaven (what a wonderful sequence, why don't people remember that scene more?).

    Yes, I'm a newbie!

My picks are as follows (not in any particular order):

1/ The time Sean Connery says "Bond, James Bond." in Dr No.

2/ The boat chase in The World is Not Enough.

    3/ The Matrix lobby scene.

4/ The lightsaber duel in The Phantom Menace. This one just out does anything done previously.

5/ "Luke, I am your father." The Empire Strikes Back.

6/ The first appearance of the Emperor in Return of the Jedi.

7/ The destruction of Paris in Armaggeddon. Just seeing a HUGE crater that covers most of Paris was something to see.

8/ The battle between Kahn and Kirk in the Mutara Nebula in Star Trek 2.

9/ The destruction of the Enterprise D in Star Trek Generations.

    10/ The death of Kirk.

    12/ The death of Spock.

13/ The pull back shot from Picards eye in the Borg cube in Star Trek First Contact.

14/ The death of "Bond" in the pre-titles for From Russia with Love.

15/ The news reels in Starship Troopers.

16/ The helicopter/bike chase over the rooftops in Tomorrow Never Dies.

17/ The destruction of the first Death Star in Star Wars.

That's all I can think of for now.
