Wow, this is tough since there are SOOO many.

    --the shocking ending of Seven
--the surprise ending of The Usual Suspects
--the surprise ending of The Sixth Sense
--the fate of Kevin Spacey in L.A. Confidential
--all of the original Star Wars Trilogy
--The Matrix lobby scene, Keanu's bullet time on the roof, the helicopter crash into the skyscraper
--First glimpse of dinosaurs in Jurassic Park
    --E.T. leaving
--Armageddon night shuttle launch, slingshot around the moon, crash of the Independence
--Jim's horseback ride down the steep mountain in The Man From Snowy River
--Car/Humvee chase in The Rock, slaughter of the SEALs in the shower room, death of Ed Harris
--the barn filled with dead Ebola-infected bodies being lit on fire in Outbreak
--nearly all of The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption
--"Rhythm of the Horse" scene in The Horse Whisperer (horseback riding in beautiful Montana with great Newman music)
--F-14 flat spin in Top Gun
--a *lot* of The Hunt for Red October
    --"Soylent Green is People!"

    Ok, I better stop there...

I'll just name one. And this one affected me for years....and stil gives me goose bumps. The desert chase from Radiers of the Lost Ark. It starts with the plane battle and ends with Jones driving off with the Ark. That man wouldn't give up!! And he had the hell kicked out of him. I about pee'd my pants in the theater. That whole scene changed the way I viewed movies.... and even played (i was in the 3rd grade when it came out) and it was the reason I origonally got into score music.

Agreed, Dave, the Desert Chase is great. Although it's actually a rip-off from a sequence in "Mad Max 2".

    Also...

The first appearance of the Djinn(Andrew Divoff) in human form in WISHMASTER gives me chills whenever I see it.

I love that scene in THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK when Cher just insults the hell out of Jack Nicholson.

The scene in FARGO where Steve Buscemi had just been shot in the face and when he returns to the hideout, bloody rag to his face, and says to Peter Stormare, "You should see the other guy."

Most memorable for me, would inlcude:

The scene in the car between the boy and his mother, in "The Sixth Sense"

The opening sequence, including the title song, to "The Sound of Music"

Gillian's escape from the institute in "The Fury"

    The prom sequence in "Carrie"

The museum sequence in "Dressed To Kill"

The buffalo stampede in "How The West Was Won"

The death of Drew Barrymore in "Scream"

    many others

Gee, Tom, you sound like me. Yes, Old Yeller was a fine film for me as a child, and I had my own children watch it, but it is a tear jerker. Disney does NOT avoid death. I.E. Bambi, Lion King. Who knows if you would like it. Heck, I cried in Turner and Hooch, so I'm a big wimp!

    1) A scene in ET (near the start) where from an extreme wideshot we see one lone ET alien walking through the redwood forrest. The music is chilling in that shot and it remains a haunting and memorable scene to me.

    2) Opening of Star Wars with THAT star destroyer.

    3) Andy reaching to the skies in the pouring rain after escaping from Shawshank Prison.

    4) "Die you son of a -" BOOM!!!! in Jaws...

    5) The "Souls don't die" scene and "Su-per-man" scene in The Iron Giant.

    6) "Eyeee am you father" from Empire Strikes Back.

    7) "Bond, James Bond" -- Dr No

    8) The warehouse shot at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark is a memorable one.

    9 Psycho's shower scene.

These are just a few, I have way too many.

I forgot to mention a few, so here they are. I'm also jacking that bold titles idea from Obi Jok Kenobi...

Snow hauntingly falls over the military takeover of Tokyo in "Patlabor 2"

The spooky image of blood flooding out of the elevators and into the lobby in "The Shining" (the Stanley Kubrick one, not the new one)

The ending moments of "Grave of the Fireflies". It's more saddening and tragic than "Schindler's List"

Opening battle to "Saving Private Ryan"

Ending death scene, nicely directed & edited, in "American Beauty"

Dave: Mad Max 2, if I remember correctly (only seen it once, and that was two years ago), the climax sequence features a truck sequence, with Mel Gibson defending the truck against a horde of attackers, much like Indy in "Raiders".

To me, the most memorable movie scenes are linked to my favourite piece of music from the film. Some of my favourites have already been mentioned - 'Jurassic Park' : Journey to the island etc. - 'Star Trek III' : The destruction of the enterprise and so on.
Two movie scenes that I can watch over and over and still get a lump in my throat are
1)Superman: The Helicopter rescue. Not necessarily the whole thing but when Clark looks to the top of the Daily Planet, sees Lois and the music subtly starts introducing the Superman theme. Goosebumps every time.

2)Lost In Space : The track on the Score is called "attempted escape". The movie itself isn't too good but every time I watch the scene where the Robinson family (minus Dad) tries to leave the dying planet, with the LIS theme building as the Jupiter II slowly attempts to gain altitude. I'm telling you...the music carries that scene and it works so well.

For a memorable movie scene that doesn't rely on music I would have to go with the beach landing in Saving Private Ryan every time. I've never walked out of a movie so depressed.

    Other memorable scenes I remembered:

    1) The opening credits of SUPERMAN-THE MOVIE. Those letters making "Ssssshhhhhiiissshhh" are so cool!

    2) CONAN, THE BARBARIAN asking for Crom to help him and his fellows in battle and adding at the end "And if you can't, the hell with you!"

    3) Terry Gilliam having a heart attack and falling from his chair while the Beast of Arrrrrrrrrrrgh was pursuing the MONTY PYTHON guys in their search for the HOLLY GRAIL.

    4) Indiana Jones shooting that angry arabian after he did an incredible acrobatic number with his huge sword in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.

A "Laurel, and Hearty welcome.." to Joan Hue, a sweet person and "Mom" to some of us from The Other Board. Hiya, Mom! Didn't think I would find your first posting, did you? I am so glad to see you, as always.

Okay - RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK was released here for Memorial Day Weekend, 1981. This means that it was in production during 1980, and Spielberg did NOT lift the "Desert Chase" sequence from THE ROAD WARRIOR/MAD MAX 2. The two sequences are magnificent, enduring, and not diminished whatsoever for having "echoes" of each other. It doesn't have to be your Favorite Movie of All Time (as it is mine), but the "Desert Chase" sequence from RAIDERS is classic and deserving of its mention here. No attacks in this, guys - all of the above is of course IMHO.

Another from RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (there are so many!):
The "Map Room" sequence, handled with the respect for religion that marked the whole series (like the later "THIS is the cup of a carpenter" from LAST CRUSADE). In the "Map Room", the Ark theme that Williams has been tickling us with to that point reaches is purest and most inspiring realization. Goosebumps!

-- the priest approaches the Martian war machine, hoping for peace, while quoting from Psalms; WAR OF THE WORLDS

-- the sudden end of the relationship between the man and the otter in RING OF BRIGHT WATER.

-- a second for Joan's TERMS OF ENDEARMENT scene; a cried heartily in realization that her mom missed it, sleeping.

-- another second to the SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE credits sequence. Still my favorite, and a welcome note from the film makers to the fans that YES, we are taking this seriously.

-- the graduation ceremony ("I Sing the Body Electric") from FAME. No brickbats, please...I already know that I'm a dork.

-- that look of pride, relief and approval that the dying Duke gives Ron Howard at the end of THE SHOOTIST.

    -- "Blue! No, Yellow! Aaaaaaaaaaa....."

NP: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK 5/5*
    Of course.

I second that, Mark: A welcome to mommy!

Andre: ...and the spoof of that Indy scene in "Temple of Doom", when he realizes that he doesn't have a gun this time!

One more: Dr. Jones Sr. and Marcus looking down the cliff in "Last Crusade", and Indy joining them. And during the motorcycle chase, when Indy is proud of himself but his father isn't impressed at all, and when Connery sets the castle afire, and... WOW! What a movie!

What about Prince John crying for his mother in Disney's great "Robin Hood"? That's probably the only English movie which I prefer watching in German (although I don't know the English version yet). Peter Ustinov not only provided the English voice for Prince John, but also his German translation! Hilarious!

I don't know if anybody has mentioned this already (the list is so long), but a scene that sticks out in my mind would have this scene in Glory.

When Denzel Washington's character is getting beaten and he sheds that tear.. the whole scene works perfectly.

I have many others and I am sure that most of them have already been posted.

Thanks a lot all of you who gave spoilers. Now I know that the Death Star blows up twice and Spock dies, just great...

Seriously, my most memorable scenes are...

When all the Football players turn in their jerseys, so Rudy can play in the last game.

When we first see Draco fly in Dragonheart.

When Boba Fett secretly follows the Falcon after the garbage is dumped in Empire, I love the very simple yet menacing oboe leit-motif that Williams gave Fett in this scene.

When the Mariner leaves dryland behind at the end of Waterworld.

"When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer." - Alan Rickman's quote in the first Die Hard.

When Zefram Cochrane makes first contact with the Vulcan in Star Trek: First Contact.

Colonel Nathan R. Jessep's "You can't handle the truth" speech in A Few Good Men.

When the P-51s fly over the prison camp in Empire of the Sun.

The sinking scene in Titanic, I would have never, ever, ever remembered that the Titanic sank if it wasn't for this glorious movie. Facetiously speaking of course.

    Here goes:

Star Wars - Millenium Falcon Blasting the Tie figher in the Death Star trench

Empire Strikes Back - Luke learning Darth Vader is his father

Return of the Jedi - Final duel between Luke and Vader. Memorable simply for the use of the men's choir during the duel. Still gives me chills.

The Phantom Menace - Final duel between Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Darth Maul

Raiders of the Lost Ark - Melting Nazis

Temple of Doom - Removing the Heart

Last Crusade - No Ticket!! and the Castle at Brunwald

    Blazing Saddles - The Governor's meeting ("I didn't get a har-rumph from that guy!")

Stargate - James Spaeder getting dragged by the water buffalo type creature

Sixth Sense - The girl ghost grabbing the kid's leg from under the bed. The boy ghost with the hole in head head. The ending when all is revealed.

There's more, but I'm going to stop there.

Hmm, this one is back. Some thoughts:

Godzilla roars his last, in his original film (1954) -- an amazingly, breathtakingly sad moment.

The Rodans choose to die together, in their original film (1956). (I asked Mr. Honda the first time I met him, "Why did you make that so sad?" He replied "Why did you THINK it was sad?"

Sanda (brown one) rescues Gaira (green one) in WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS (1966) -- that amazing slow-motion flick of his wrist with the water flickering off it ("Lay off my little brother!" -- I could have used a Sanda many times in my Gaira-like youth)

The Lady of the Lake accepts Excalibur for the last time: EXCALIBUR (1981). Earlier in the picture, Guinevere returns it to Arthur, and he whispers of their lost love, "It is a dream that I have."

The final shot of SEVEN SAMURAI. (Anything in SEVEN SAMURAI, but that's academic.)

"La Golorindina" -- THE WILD BUNCH.

NP: CRIMINAL LAW (Jerry Goldsmith, all synths but VERY interesting, at least to me -- my favorite of his synth scores, although I haven't heard all of ALIEN NATION yet.)
