in the latest british vogue there was a blurb about sakamoto's new opera "life" about the 20th century, with costumes by fashion designer yohji yamamoto (who also had sakamoto do the music for a '95 runway show of his- anyone have this? )
this latest project sounds fascinating, just like a lot of this great composer's career (check out his wild palms, little buddha and love is the devil scores, as well as his non-score albums smoochy, sweet revenge, heartbeat and 1000 knives of r.s. ) discuss?

If you like Mr Sakamoto so much then I highly recomend you check out the album Discord.
It is his first Symphony which is untitled. It is truly an unbelievable work! You wont regret it. It is so different from anything I have ever heard without being too esoteric.
    unbeleivable
Oh, and do you have Snake Eyes - I think it is his best score.

Have to chime in and say good things about the composer of The Sheltering Sky, Wuthering Heights, The Wings of Honnamise, Wild Palms, and The Last Emperor--all really great scores.

Sakamoto mostly gives me a rash, especially when he tries to act (you should see the press coverage he got in Japan for his "performance" in THE LAST EMPEROR -- he played Colonel Amagasu, who actually summoned Akira Ifukube to China during the war, to write musical propaganda about the Japanese occupation! Ifukube, offended I think, dodged the assignment by writing merely about the pastoral things he saw in China. The resulting work, "Forest in an Arctic Zone," was lost until 1990 -- the ship carrying Ifukube's salary for the job was sunk in action! [It turned out the score sheets had never left China.] I mention this because I'm just tickled at the metaphor of a hack like Sakamoto ordering a genius like Ifukube around, even though it's not literally true.)

Sakamoto's done some decent work, though -- I did like the main theme for MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. LAWRENCE (a movie I otherwise despised, not least for Sakamoto's non-performance in the lead), and in particular, his lovely theme for the anime ROYAL SPACE FORCE.

NP: DESTROY THE MONSTERS (odd hard-rock covers of various Godzilla themes, for which I am developing an unexpected affection)
