Here are the nominees for Best Original Score and Song, just in case anyone hasn't heard.
    SCORE
    AMERICAN BEAUTY-Thomas Newman
    ANGELA'S ASHES-John Williams
    THE CIDER HOUSE RULES-Rachel Portman
    THE RED VIOLIN-John Corigliano
    THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY-Gabriel Yared

    SONG
Blame Canada-SOUTH PARK: BIGGER LONGER, & UNCUT
The Music of My Heart-MUSIC OF THE HEART
    Save Me-MAGNOLIA
When She Loved Me-TOY STORY 2
    You'll Be in My Heart-TARZAN

My personal picks are Angela's Ashes for score, and When She Loved Me for song. It would be neat to see Blame Canada win, though.
The winners, however, I think, will probably be American Beauty and You'll Be In My Heart, but you never know.
What are some of your thoughts on this?

    NP: Superman-Expanded Original--John Williams

I am so shocked that Morricone didn't get his nomination for THE LEGEND OF 1900 ... all my absolutes of the past few weeks fall to pieces. I was SO SURE he would win this year ... although I was always careful to qualify "IF he's nominated." But I was pretty sure he would be.

Almost as shocking is the nomination of "Blame Canada." I figured if ANY song got nominated from SOUTH PARK, it would be "Up There." Anyway, the winner will be Phil Collins for TARZAN.

Looking forward to Debbie Allen's "Blame Canada" number, though! This is just a hysterical prospect ...

Who will take Best Score this year ... this is a tough one now. My best guess is Corigliano. My next best guess is Thomas Newman, in a sweep for AMERICAN BEAUTY -- although I don't think AMERICAN BEAUTY is GOING to sweep, at least I don't think so right now.

I was pleased as hell to see Toni Collette nominated for her work in THE SIXTH SENSE -- it might have been easy to overlook her, but it would have been wrong.

How much you wanna bet THE MATRIX takes Best Visual Effects over THE PHANTOM MENACE?

    NP: THE MUMMY (Jerry somebody)

    Scott,

Sorry but I hope THE MATRIX wins in the category for best visual effects. MENACE wasn't that groundbreaking while THE MATRIX was.

I'm not saying MENACE was bad ... no, far from it. The visual effects were great, but not groundbreaking.

Note to H Rocco, there will be no dance numbers this year. Richard and Lili Fini Zanuck stated a few months ago (I think) that Debbie Allen's services would not be required
    (not in so many words).

Personally, I greet that with a big "thumbs up."

    thank goodness.
    never liked Debbie Allen's stuff.

last year's Oscars just confirmed my belief.
    what a travesty.

I'm really disappointed that "Legend of 1900"
wasn't nominated. And while there may be those that disagree, I would have liked to have seen "Snow Falling On Cedars" nominated for Best Picture and Best Score. "Snow..." is steadily becoming one of my favorite scores - definitely for this year. It should have replaced "Cider House Rules" on both counts as far as I'm concerned.

NP: Emerson, Lake, & Palmer: "Pictures at an Exhibition"

Here's what the homepage of the Austrian Television has to say about the "film music" nominations in their "complete nominations list" (which looks really nearly complete):

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
    Music Of The Heart
    Magnolia
    Toy Story 2
    Tarzan

...no comment. They seem to have included every category in their list, except for the score category.

I know I'm continuing along a non-score-related topic, but I have to disagree with Kris. The Matrix may have been a better film overall than The Phantom Menace, but Menace's F/X were pretty groundbreaking. New techniques were utilized and others perfected. Digital characters were refined (whether that's good or bad is up in the air, but it's still an impressive effect). almost all of the sets were created in the computer, and the ones that weren't were digitally enhanced. I'd have to give the visual effects Oscar to Phantom Menace. I just hope it doesn't fall into the that's-what-everyone's-expecting trap.

It's too early to tell (at least for me), but I'd bet THE MATRIX is more likely to win the FX Oscar than THE PHANTOM MENACE, simply because THE MATRIX seems to be, by far, the better liked of the two films. Just a gut feeling. But a reflex vote for PHANTOM MENACE by the various Academy members would surprise no one, least of all me.

The effects Oscar (with the exception of the year it went to KING KONG and LOGAN'S RUN) seems to actually be given to a film on merit from time to time. The best example I can think of is when ALIEN won over THE BLACK HOLE, ST:TMP and 1941. While ALIEN was not the most spectacular of those nominees, it arguably had the best visual effects.

Also, didn't those four films have terrific scores?

    No Phantom Menace.

    No Goldsmith.

    No Galaxy Quest.

    One Score Category.

    No Jim Carrey(again).

And the Academy screws us once more.

NP - Hot Shots! Part Deux ****/*****

Ahhh, how well Jeron knows me. Kinda scary actually. Anyway, I will officially recount my statemt about leaving if Menace doesn't win. I could never leave you guys, you're like family.

Kris, I have to agree with Bryan. Technical wise Menace offers a higher precentage of new improved effects. The effects for Matrix were extraordinary but really nothing we haven't kinda seen before (even the Gap commercials showed some of the stuff). But yes, overall , as much as I hate to admit it, The Matrix was a better movie. (I really hated saying that).

    A few comments:
AMERICAN BEAUTY: A highly original score, emphasizing Newman's talent, and avoiding the obvious, clichéed string apporach. Deserved!

ANGELA'S ASHES: Not as good as TPM, in my opinion, but a beautiful masterpiece incorporating the "religous" sound I love so much. Deserved!

CIDER HOUSE RULES: Well, I guess it's "politically correct" to add a woman to the list, but as much as I respect Portman (I think her EMMA was great AND deserving), I don't think this one deserved it. A non-surprising, by-the-book score.

RED VIOLIN: Same as above. Just because you're a respected Corigliano and only composes ONE score every 10 years, doesn't mean it's a masterpiece, does it. A good score, almost another character in the movie, but definitely not one of 99's top 5.

TALENTED MR. RIPLEY: Haven't heard the score, but I smell the "English Patient" syndrome here. More politics?
