I struck gold today at some uncharted used CD stores. You know that feeling when you walk into a musty old second-hand store and see that mountain of CDs that must have been gathering dust for about twelve years? Maybe a dozen people have stopped to look at it ... you're probably the only soundtrack collector who ever will. Anyway, here's my haul. Some of it I just hadn't gotten around to getting before. Some of it was on a whim. Any opinions?A Few Good Men (Shaiman)
Arnold: Film Music (Malcolm Arnold)
Best Shot (aka Hoosiers) (Goldsmith)
Born on the Fourth of July (Williams)KING OF KINGS (Sony)
This disc is 76 minutes long, and SPECTACULAR. I remember hearing it was rare; is this true?Lost Horizon: Classic Film Scores of Dimitri Tiomkin
QB VII (Goldsmith)
Rambling Rose (Bernstein)
Sleepers (Williams)
Sleeping With the Enemy (Goldsmith)
Sommersby (Elfman) (Yeah, I know, it's about time.)
Sunset Boulevard -- The Classic Film Scores of Franz Waxman
Tom and Huck (Stephen Endelman)
Voyages -- The Film Music Journeys of Alan SilvestriNP: "Best Shot" (Goldsmith)

Yeah there are several used stores I hit on a regular basis and get lucky. Recent "finds":Gremlins - I thought this was rare...
Miklos Rozsa at MGM - saved about $18.00 bucks over the retail store
Several of the EMI-James Bond CD's to update my LP versionOn the other hand, it is a little frustrating to find a used copy of something I just paid full price for last week. That has happened too often.
What are your experiences with Cutout bins in the retail stores? I generally give them a pass because of the work and time involved to find the "diamonds in the rough."

I wish I had cutout bins to peruse. There "ain't none here" where I'm located. Just too off the beaten and well worn path of commerce, I guess.NP-Galaxy Quest (finally got it!)

the cut-out bins have been kind to me.last year I found Goldsmith's Papillon, Ishams' Mrs Parker and the Vicious Circle, Cobb, Body Bags, Year of the Comet, Robocop 3, Golden Gate, and several more Varese releases.
just today I found about about 10 copies of Josh and S.A.M., a Th Newman score that turns out to be better than I thought it would be-- for only $1.99 still sealed.

Wedge, you struck paydirt there. Tremendous finds. What city was it in?My best two recent finds like that were in 1998 at the Mile High Flea Market in Denver and in 1998 at the Hastings store in College Station, Texas. I found about 10 CDs at each place for around 2-3 dollars each average. At Hastings I got several rare Varese titles and some Intradas, at Denver all kinds of good titles for 3-8 dollars each. Best, John.

These posts make me viscerally jealous to the point where I know I shouldn't look at them; although I've turned up my own fair share of cheap treasures as the years have gone by. But the stuff Wedge has found, my God! It's virtually inconceivable in New York. The cheapest soundtrack I ever found -- $1 for Zimmer's DROP ZONE, and worth every penny -- was still an anomaly. You'd never find something like QB VII for $3 out here.As far as I know ...
How close to Detroit is Lansing? If I get to make that Goldsmith concert in June, maybe I'll make a side trip ...

I've been lucky and found some great cd's in used cd bins.Among some of the more hard-to-find cd's i've come across are:Black Rain (Zimmer)
The Shadow (Goldsmith)
The Specialist (Barry)
Dennis the Menace (Goldsmith)
Wyatt Earp (Howard)

Used bins rock.I recently got:
The Chamber, Ever After, Con-Air, Executive Decision, Lethal Weapon 3, and several others in one of those. Oh yeah, Bond music was so mass-produced that you can still find them just about anywhere, especialy in a not-s-well known CD store where they haven't sold all their back stock too yet. Thats how I got most of mine. A local store is selling them all off for 10.99 each. Damn shame they don't have View To A Kill or For Your Eyes Only. Ahh well.
NP - Days of Thunder boot (Hans Zimmer) Just came in the mail today! WOOOOOOHOOOOO
Matthew,
Great job with Black Rain! That's a Zimmer classic! Your gonna love it...especialy the Nick and Masa track.

H, Lansing is about 1hr 15min drive from Detroit. I've made the journey on numerous occasions ... that's why I'm going to the Goldsmith concert in June at least twice. An extra 2.5 hours of driving and $15 plus gas is MORE than worth it for an extra dose of magic. You'll find me there Thursday morning (front row) and Friday night (nosebleed section.)Lansing does indeed have some terrific used CD stores. These latest, however, I never knew about until last week. They're way out on the fringe, and they look like used car-part shops (which they chiefly are.) My Dad stopped by and saw they had CDs and clued me in. It was a LOT of trouble, though. There were three locations. Each one had HUNDREDS and hundreds of CDs ... in no particular order. Many were without case labels. Suffice it to say that only many hours and several blistered fingers yielded my latest crop.
And of course, half the trick is knowing where to go.
Lots of these places are tucked away and masquerading as many different kinds of stores. If you're ever in town, H, I'd be happy to give you the grand tour. A full day could be spent exploring the various nooks and crannies of the Lansing used CD (and LP) scene.NP: "Sleeping With the Enemy" (Goldsmith) DAMN! Goldsmith strikes again! I haven't been this enchanted with a G love theme since "Flying Dreams!"

Jeron,I agree.Bulworth is wonderful,or for me at least track #1 is.I'm less fond of track #2,for some reason Morricone's comedy music doesn't do anything for me.But suite #1 is absolutely beautiful. It almost brings tears to my eyes when I hear it.Anyway getting back on topic, sort of.I saw BULWORTH used today, and just 2 weeks ago I paid $18 for it new. After about three months of searching for a used copy I broke down and forked out full price, then only 2 weeks later I see 2 used copies in a store. That has happened to me a number of times.Although I know it's just a coincidence I sometimes feel that the record stores enjoy toying with the film score community.Because I never notice the same type of situation when searching out a regular cd.

John,I frequent the Mile High Flea Market in Denver a lot, I have found some great used CDs there. If you can stand being around that environment for a couple hours Flea Markets always hide treasures like that.
Last week I found the Promo of Tommy Tallarico's score to the Tomorrow Never Dies video game in a used store for 6 bucks, it was still in the rapper too.
I have around 500 scores and close to 300 of them were purchased used, there are many great used stores around the Denver/Boulder area of Colorado.

My best-ever bargain, besides the $1.07 (after tax) DROP ZONE, was the 88-cent WHITE MAN'S BURDEN. Two nice cues by Howard Shore, but also a bunch of really good songs, mostly by acts I'd never heard of. I don't know why that album wasn't a bigger hit, as it was better than a lot of song-soundtracks I've heard. (I guess I know why: the movie wasn't popular.)Funny, I probably wouldn't have paid more than 88 cents for WHITE MAN'S BURDEN sight unheard, as it were, but it turned out to be worth a few bucks' more, in terms of sheer enjoyment.

Audacity, I have been to the Flea Market in Denver in 1998 and 1999 in June both years. Spent 6 hours one day and 8 on another. Found a lot the first time. The second, not so much.I have been many times in my trips to Colorado to Boulder to all the stores there and try and hit as many as possible all around the state. The fellow in Albums on the Hill recognizes me each time I go in there. I have been there around 10-12 times in the summers. Best, John.

And Colorado Springs had many good stores in the early to mid-'80s. Not so many now. When Collectors Records was there I used to go in there all the time. One of my best stops there in the early '80s was in 1982 when Reagan was there. I was on the next street over looking at records in the big shop there while he was in a parade a block or two over. Best, John.
