Just watched the DVD today, and I must say, it was an extremely creepy film, and I was constantly on edge. This is the "person-seeing-dead-people" movie THE SIXTH SENSE should have been, which practically put me to sleep.

My only complaint about ECHOES is James Newton Howard's score. It had it's moments, but over-all, I felt he (or maybe another composer altogether) could have done a better job.

    Anybody agree/disagree?

I didn't care for Howard's score for STIR OF ECHOES the first time I saw the film, but the second time around it grew on me. Particularly the soft main theme, which is real nice. His work on THE SIXTH SENSE remains my favorite of these two "ghost" films he scored last year, but ECHOES was a worthy effort.

I thought J.N. Howard's score was superb. It's minimal use in the film is used to a great effect. The main piano theme only showed up a few times, but those scenes in which it appeared were pure magic. If the music were overused, it wouldn't have the same effect. The rest of the score, aside from the action moments, contained mood music that, like the piano theme, only showed up where it could really get under the audience's skin. Judging from your remark that the film was extremely creepy, dantoris, I think James Newton Howard succeeded.

I know it worked for me. A smart score, I believe.

Perhaps you're right, Rang. Maybe it will grow on me with a second listen. I'll be watching it again tomorrow afternoon, so I'll see.

I agree with Al, I thought it worked perfect in the movie to make the scenes "creepy".
I did like The Sixth Sense better though, the movie and the score.

THE SIXTH SENSE is an infinitely better movie, but the score is of a different character than STIR OF ECHOES -- more of an underline than a series of exclamation points. I didn't much care for STIR OF ECHOES the film, but a couple of Howard's cues made me jump out of my skin -- I was impressed as hell that he could even write something that gnarled and intense. I'm not sure I'm interested in owning either score, though; Howard's a competent film composer, but I never find myself playing his albums much; I only have one or two left in my whole collection.

Based on the trailer for DINOSAUR, however, I might well want to own THAT one.

Just finished the second viewing. The music did kinda grow on me a bit more, but not a lot. Perhaps a third viewing is in order for tomorrow. (Damn - this movie warrants a lot of replay mileage. My second viewing, and I was still on edge even though I knew everything).

    4. "Stay Awake" - Dishwalla
    5. Nightmare Lovemaking
    6. "Mirror Mirror" - Wild Strawberries

Yeah it does, thanks a lot. I might just get the disc if it is over 15-20 minutes of score, I'll go to an review site, hopefully at least one has an review and track lengths of the disc.

BTW, does anyone know if the film is out on video, especially DVD? If it is I would hope for an Isolated Score.

It's an excellent DVD, but there is no isolated score.
