Okay, I have always admired his work, but I realized that I have only five cds of his. Any suggestions? Here are the ones that I have:The Beyondness of Things
Dances With Wolves
The Living Daylights
Playing By Heart
Raise the TitanicSpecifically, how is the recent "Zulu" double disc? I thought about getting it, but have read some mixed opinions of it.

BODY HEAT is one of his very best, as is THE SPECIALIST.The first volume of MOVIOLA will expose you to a few of his themes that are excellent and not readily available elsewhere -- if you like those well enough, you might want to seek out certain of those larger scores that are still available.

I agree 100% with HRocco...you can't go wrong with The Specialist, Body Heat and Moviola 1...Somewhere in Time is GLORIOUSLY romantic...NP - Total Recall (Expanded) - Goldsmith

I think you should get:BODY HEAT
OUT OF AFRICA
SOMEWHERE IN TIMEGet the re-recordings of each, there's more music and in most cases better sound quality.

If you can get hold of them I would suggest...The Ipcress File
Goldfinger
You Only Live Twice
Deadfall
The Lion In Winter - see how Barry REALLY CAN kick everyone else's ass when it comes to BIG choral music without having to refer to Carl Orff!
Last of all I would have mentioned Barry's best Bond score On Her Majesty's Secret Service, But there was SOOOO much good stuff left off............
To be honest I'm not too keen on some of Barry's later stuff, in particular 'Dances','africa',S/W in Time etc etc, But would definately go along with 'Beyondness',The Specialist, and playing by Heart!
As far as compilation's go I would check out 'Ready When You Are, J.B.' a late 60's album recently re-issued and conducted by the main man himself.......Highlights on the album include 'Who Will Buy My Yesterday's' from OHMSS (not on the original soundtrack), It doesn't come much more sensual/erotic than this!!

p.s. If you have a few hundred buck's spare try Barry's original (on 'southern cross') Body Heat!I guess it's gotta be Varese's Re-recording eh??

Bel366,In answer to your "Zulu" question: It's a tough call. The general consensus seems to be that the Silva CD of the original soundtrack (conducted by Barry) is the more powerful performance, but the Silva re-recording by Nic Raine has the better sound quality. (It also has a few extra minutes of the score, including a very nice, if very brief, "Bromhead's Safari" track heard early in the movie but not on the original soundtrack CD.)
From what I remember of a thread devoted to this subject either on this message board or the FSM board, the majority of replies seemed to favor the Barry version. But the important thing is to at least get one of them!!
Also, I don't think anyone's mentioned "The Last Valley" yet -- another Barry score I think you'd like.

Barry is always the same. Nothing different than a good theme and the rest.. well, boring.
His romantic efforts are really good ones (but notice the same old orchestration...) but I admit that his Bond, Specialist and even Black Hole (I used to love this one) are poor as they can be.
Good ones: Across The sea of Time, Until September, Out of Africa, Somewhere In Time (obvious but the best) Indecent Proposal and My Life.Bye

I kinda dig his work for Petulia. cool score.I also get a kick out of Scarlet Letter, Across the Sea of Time, the Beyondness of Things, and Cry the Beloved Country
but I think his best is Dances with Wolves.

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for all the great suggestions! I do plan to check out some of them.Lion in Winter is still available over here. As some of you from the FSM site know, I work in a bookstore which sells cds and one that we have on the sound system is LIW. I can't think of the label offhand, but I think the retail is only $11.97.

The response I got from Screen Archives when I tried to order THE LAST VALLEY was that the pressing is sold out and they will not be getting any more copies.
