I would like to propose another survey. This would be a survey of the greatest scores of all time. This should be similar to surveying the greatest films of all time, like the American Film Institute's top 100 films. This would be a list of the great scores that have endured and will withstand the test of time for a long time to come. Plase give some thought to this survey and let's see if we can come up with our list of the greatest scores.

Everyone should list only one score.

I'll start. One of the scores that I consider has been remembered and will be remembered for a long time is Bernard Herrmann's Citizen Kane. It is the perfect fitting score for the greatest film ever made. Herrmann and Welles worked hand in hand to create the perfect score for this film.

    Okay, who's next?

    NP: Citizen Kane (McNeely cond.)

Film scoring as we know it began with Max Steiner and KING KONG. That's my vote.

I'll say RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. I believe that to be one that people will remember for years. Maybe not specific parts, but everyone will remember that instantly-identifiable theme.

Okay, that's already two votes in a row for RAIDERS. Was anyone planning on weighting these votes, as the AFI list was weighted?

I just have the disturbing feeling we'll get just enough votes to put ARMAGEDDON at number 1 if it's a weighted list ...

Well, it looks like I was supposed to list one. The scores listed above, I think will be all picked, so that may save time! But, if I had one vote...

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD(I love this score and I definitely think it should be thrown on the list as it is one of the most memorable themes every written)

Just one? Just one vote? Ouiouiouiouiouiouio... I'm still thinking, still thinking... how to vote, how to vote... should I vote for a seminal, important film score that set the way for many future scores? Should I vote for an outsider, but personal favorite of mine? I gotta think about it...

Even tough it didn't break any new ground, I think Silvestri's score to Back to the Future should be included. It is one of the most recognizable themes to one of the most popular Science Fiction movie series.

I think that music will forever as a perfect evocation of the American West. I also think it is Barry's very best score.

I think that you should allow everyone ten votes. Then take all votes, group by title to get the total number of votes for that title and then take the top 100 from that list.

If you just do 1 vote to a person, you will not get a 100 scores, you get about 35 scores with 1 vote or maybe two.

Also, should it include only scores that have been released or all scores?

Should it be limited to scores from the 20th century?

Why on earth did this thread break down? We didn't even hit a hundred scores even with those guys who posted more than one.

Is anyone interested in moderating this thread? (I halfway am ... )

NP: various themes downloaded from DECONSTRUCTING GOLDSMITH -- I'm surprised how different "The Artist Who Did Not Want To Paint," in the original soundtrack version, seems quite different from the cover that Intrada put out along with RIO CONCHOS more than ten years ago)

The unadulterated, full version (90+ minutes of an 104 minute film) of Les Baxter's epic Jules Verne fantasy, MASTER OF THE WORLD, complete with it's original chorus and pipe organ. Said full score not to be mistaken for the okay but muzaked up and watered down 25 minute album put out by Vee Jay and reissued by Varese Sarabande.

This score may come as quite a surprise to the people who think this kind of epic action score didn't evolve until the late 1970s.

It's too bad, probably not one person here, except me, has heard it. So, how can you ever know?

STAR WARS, of course - although I'm only allowed ONE pick (which is GREAT! - that's the way surveys should be conducted, I HATE those long-winding lists of stuff that doesn't tell me anything other than that they're actual lists!), I tend to put all the STAR WARS films into one whole. In other words, my vote goes to the STAR WARS QUARTET.
