I've just been watching "Streets Of Laredo" again with its great music by David Shire. I believe FSM magazine voted it best unreleased tv score a few years back. Can anyone recommend other programmes and music - and probably more importantly, availability on disc?
    Cheers. JohnT.

Peter Bernstein's score for the "Rough Riders" miniseries, with a terrific theme contributed by his father, Elmer. Still available on CD, as far as I know.

Definately Lonesome Dove by Basil Poledouris. This is epic music if ever there was such a thing.

I will most definitely agree with PeterD's recommendation of Rough Riders, an absolutely awesome score.
Also check out Merlin by Trevor Jones, I wish more of this score was released but the OST does have an hour of the best music from the mini-series.

Speaking of "Rough Riders" and "Lonesome Dove," could someone tell me: Do my ears deceive me, or does Peter Bernstein's "Rough Riders Theme" (the first track on the CD) bear an uncanny resemblance to one of Poledouris's "Lonesome Dove" themes (listen to the "Night Mares" track on the Cabin Fever CD)? Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that (as I remember reading someplace) Poledouris was director Milius's first choice for composer, but he was unavailable.

Good TV scores? Aw, that's a tough question - I've got too many to list.

Let me just put out a heartfelt recommendation for the wonderful music created for the equally wonderful YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES. With no further ado, I'm forwarding you to my own pocket review of these 4 Varese volumes:

I would love to see a release of Arthur of the Britons, an early 70's british t.v. series staring Oliver Tobias which also boasted a great main title theme by Elmer Bernstein (I can't remember who scored the high quality incidental music....anyone?), there was talk of this being released by Silva Screen a few years back, anyone know what happened?

Also would like to see a release of Billy Goldenberg's excellent Columbo scores, I once had a boot of his Ransom for a Dead Man, the feature length first episode of Columbo, proof that it wasn't just Goldsmith,North and Barry who were composing scores of distinction and quality!

I no longer have the boot due to some theiving rat....but that's another story!

PeterD, The theme to Police Story is one of my all time faves.......can't wait for the c.d. release!!

I wish we could see more television scores released for current programming. Especially shows like Buffy and Angel. There's some great scores out there just wasting away in some vault. Let the fans listen.

Did I hear this right, or is there (or not) a CD of Robert Cobert's NIGHT STALKER/NIGHT STRANGLER? There ought to be. What with the profusion of Cobert's DARK SHADOWS CDs, I'd bet there's a market.

If I was them, I'd put Gil Melle's amazing theme for the subsequent KOLCHAK series on there too.

Melle had actually written the theme for a Gene Roddenberry project that didn't get off the ground. The KOLCHAK producer actually said to him something like "Well, what can you come up with in thirty minutes?" and Melle remembered the Roddenberry tape, ran down the hall, and hey presto! looked even more the genius than he actually is!

I understand that Robert Cobert's WINDS OF WAR is also a big seller. I remember a reporter's visit to the scoring sessions: Cobert musing to the orchestra, "Okay, we're gonna do 'Himmler Inspects the Gas Chambers' -- yeah, another one of my Top 40 hits ... "

I'm still waiting for a release of the following TV scores:

"The Adventures of Brisco County Jr."
    "The Pretender"
    "Nash Bridges"
"Walker, Texas Ranger" (there was supposed to be one, but it was cancelled)
    "L.A. Heat"
    "Cobra"

and several others I can't recall now.

While on the discussion of TV scores, here are some that have been mentioned yet

(1.) The ORIGINAL OUTER LIMITS by Dominic Frontiere (GNP)

(2.) QBVII and MASADA by Jerry Goldmsith

    (3.) V & V-The Series (Joe Harnell & Dennis McCarthy)

    (4.) "The Thornbirds" (Henry Mancini)

(5.) "Amazing Stories" (Various), have any of you gotton the VARESE CD?

    (6.) "Batman Beyond" (Various)

(7.) "Dr.Who:The Movie" (John Debney and company)

(8.) "Beauty and the Beast" (Lee Holdridge and Don Davis) have any of you picked up the Don Davis "Hyperspace" album that has a 45 minutes suite of his music from the series?

If not, your missing a great piece of music.

I could go on, there has been ALOT of good scores written for episodic programs,MOW's and Mini-series.

Sometimes it's far better then many feature scores I hear by major composers.

    IMHO of course.

    Ford

A lot of cool stuff was written for TV movies in the seventies. Goldsmith went through a brief period where he did almost nothing else. From 1970 to 1975, he did seventeen of them -- eighteen if you count QB VII (a miniseries). Capturing the Emmy three consecutive years in a row, for THE RED PONY, QB VII and BABE.

In the SAME time period, Goldsmith scored twenty-five feature films! And scored themes and episode for nine TV series as well!

After that, he's only done a handful of prestige projects for the small screen, including CONTRACT ON CHERRY STREET, which I believe was originally intended for theaters anyway. Goldsmith recalled that he did the movie principally because Sinatra personally requested him to. He must've liked Jerry's work on VON RYAN'S EXPRESS and THE DETECTIVE, eh?

We've mentioned Gil Melle off and on, but I don't think his FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY popped up. Billy Goldenberg did a nice terse score for SHORT WALK TO DAYLIGHT (a sort of a small-scale anticipation of the Stallone DAYLIGHT). Robert Cobert did a great job on the Dan Curtis version of DRACULA with Jack Palance -- indeed, he's said he thought his romantic approach to the material anticipated John Williams' approach in the 1979 DRACULA, and Wojciech Kilar's 1992 DRACULA.

What about The Batman/Superman Adventures (they really need to put some of the scores on disc, particularly the Batman scores - Shirley Walker and company do consistently great work, especially when it comes to scoring the villians).

Just like to reiterate a fine score I heard during the program "The Greeks" a week ago. It's kind of a mixture between the best parts of "Glory" and "Last of the Mochicans" in places.

If you like Horner and/or Edelman, you'll like this score. And it is available at the PBS website.

We discussed this several times in the last six months on the other board:

Some TV music I believe to be excellent over the years

    l. Thriller-episode scores by Goldsmith
    2. Twilight Zone-much on CD now
    3. Star Trek-a lot available now
    4. All of the TV movies mentioned above and many others including that great score by Safan for Son of the Morning Star about Custer
    5. TV scores by Rosenthal including Billy the Kid, 21 Hours at Munich, Mussolini and many others
    6. Several TV films by Broughton
    7. Moby Dick-Patrick Stewart version by Gordon
    8. Animal Farm-just recently on TV-excellent

There are just a few to add. Thanks, John.

Any "Dr Who" music from the late 80's.
    Babylon 5 by Chris Franke.
X-Files and Millennium by Mark Snow.
Maybe a few cues from Buffy. One of these is available on the Buffy soundtrack.

    yes John,

Bernstein's GENOCIDE score is mighty powerful.

Almost as depressing as the Schindler's List score.
