So you've been out with the girl of your dreams, you've had a good time indeed and she even accepted your invitation for a "cup of coffee"!! You feel lucky, you're in the livingroom, on a comfortable sofa and you start to kiss and fondle. You feel so good, ready to GET IT ON! Suddenly she stops, asking for some music! The music! Need music! You need to set the mood! So you say excuse me and roll over to the stereo, looking through your collection and you ask "What do you like?" And she answers, "Something that turns me on...."

So you pull out a CD smiling, the original motion picture soundtrack for.......?

My pick would be "Playing by Heart" by John Barry. What about you guys?

    NP "Bicentennial Man"

I'm surprised I even have to say it. I thought it was understood:

That's an easy (but sad) one.

Since I've never been in that position (in fact, never been on a date), I would have to say that I wouldn't be playing anything.

Kevin... aren't you 37? Man, we need to get you some female attention!... that is of course, if you like females. (j/k - but hey, ya never know!!)

Anyway- hmmm... music to score by? Let's see. I'd have to go with Al's suggestion: Basic Instinct. Haven't heard Playing by Heart, yet... but I'm sure that would be terrific as well.

    Hmm,
all I can say, this situation would never happen to me, so why even get into it.

But for those who find themselves in this situation, here we go...

Basic Instinct (kind of, sort of)
    Love Story
    Dr. Zhivago
    Gone With the Wind

there are othrs, but I'm too tired to bother.

I've been in this situation and turned to the old classic Mancini batchelor pad music like Peter Gunn.

The girl knows immediately what the whole sound is about and if she's cool she laughs and eats it up.

But be warned--it's a make or break move. If you get a funny look, it's another night of auto-eroticism.

Romantic sentimentalist that I am, I wouldn't get into or condone this situation, but I will lend my musical opinion.

First of all, yes, Basic Instinct is a sensual score, but don't you think it would be a little... (how should I say it?)... creepy? It has that eerie forboding sense in it, and it just doesn't seem right for the occassion unless one of you plans to kill the other person... (Good for mating praying mantises, I guess).

There's only one score which I think I would ever use at a time like this...

THE RUSSIA HOUSE by Jerry Goldsmith

    James
NP - The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca (*****)

I think a good score for this kind of situation would be...

    BODY HEAT- John Barry

This music would get anybody in the mood.

I hate to be the one to say this, but in this case, screw film music. I know all of you are fans, but chances are any score you play unless its some mushy romantic stuff won't "get her in the mood"

Play Enigma instead. Most girls I know love `em. Also quite nice since about 50% of all their cd's use erotica as their choice topic.

And you never know...you might get a "sultry" dance out of her.

By answering this question I am about to destroy my reputation as a normal individual. I hope you guys will please not go too hard on me.
    How should I put this?
I have had to put on "Interview with the Vampire" during a few passionate moments. You know, that whole "I am not human but rather some sort of animal who has to bite" thing - dont yoou know? Well anyway, that score has been known (in the past, when we were still together) to get a certain couple very - umm, well you know.
Right now I seem to have to play "My Funny Valentine" from The Talented Mr. Ripley a lot for my <blush> new valentine

I agree with Enigma.. good mood music. There have been times I've jokingly told my gf that we should play Mars Attacks, but then I just get laughed at. But as far as film music goes, I suggest Braveheart. That or take a bunch of individual cues from different movies and burn them all onto one CD.

Just a note, to follow up on my initial statement: Truthfully, I've NEVER been in a situation like this, nor would I ever take advantage of a situation like it. I don't condone it, but heck - it was fun to answer... this being all hypothetical and all.

Honestly, I'd never even TRY film music. As Mr. Goldberg says above, you might get a funny look.

BODY HEAT is probably the best suggestion of those above. Parts of BASIC INSTINCT and THE RUSSIA HOUSE would work too, if you preprogrammed them to skip certain cues. Of course, this depends on at what stage of the evening you're deploying such tunes ...

Be realistic, gentlemen. Sinatra. Barry White. The obvious standards.

NP: EARTH'S GREATEST BATTLE (Akira Ifukube, and no, I'd never dream of playing this on a DATE!)

It took me a while to rummage through some boxes, but here's a tape I used to good effect in the late 70s and early 80s.

Even got a few reminders from girl friends to be sure and bring "The Tape" with me when I got invited over.

These are all instrumentals on a 60-minute tape. Put it on just as you are serving your beverage of choice.

On side one, start with John Barry:
On Her Majesty's Secret Service -- "We have All the Time in the World"
Somewhere in Time -- "Main Title" and "Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini"

    Move on to Goldsmith:
    Logan's Run -- "End Title"
    Capricorn One -- "Kay's Theme"
Wind and the Lion -- "I Remember"
    Sand Pebbles -- "Getting Acquainted"
Under Fire -- "A New Love"

    On to side two:
    Williams:
Superman -- "Love Theme (Can You Read My Mind?)"

    Moroder:
    Midnight Express "Love Theme"

    From the movie "10," Ravel's
    Bolero

    Williams again:
Star Wars -- "Princess Leia's Theme"
Empire Strikes Back -- "Han Solo and the Princess"

Great for setting the mood, keeping the mood and enhancing the experience.

One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of people (especially females) don't like the action cues in movie music, preferring the theme music.

These days, I'd probably use Princess Bride, Titanic and others to replace the more dated examples above.

NP: Wind and the Lion -- "I Remember"

Thanks for the clarification. After 20 years, that piece has kind of grown on me, but the lyrics are still pretty inane. Could tend to put a damper on things...

I agree with AaronR1074, this might not be the right time for film music unless the girl is a film music fan also. Or possibly if you can make a compilation of different themes.

I will now pass on my secret weapon to all of you, it has never failed me once. Play anything by the group Chicago, preferably there 1980s stuff, some of there stuff from the 70s is horrible. The best two CDs to use in this situation are Chicago Greatest hits Volume 2, and Chicago 21, trust me its a sure shot.
