Can anyone provide a track listing of this old Malcolm Arnold LP (on Mainstream)? I don't think it's on CD yet.[This message has been edited by JEC (edited 26 January 2000).]

JEC,From the Mainstream LP:
SIDE ONE:
1. Main Title 2:50
2. Stupid Fool 1:55
3. Must Get to England 3:15
4. German Army Band 1:05
5. Love Theme ("Anna") 3:30
6. Fall Astern 4:26SIDE TWO:
1. Silent Night 1:57
2. Listen 1:48
3. Knute Skiing Away 2:45
4. Ferry Leaving Harbor 4:21
5. Destruction of Plant 4:10
6. Heroes of Telemark and End Titles 2:29I'm hoping that Marco Polo will include this score on their upcoming Malcolm Arnold compilation CD, but a full-score CD would be even better, of course -- and the music certainly deserves one! Unfortunately, I haven't heard of any plans for one . . .

This movie is kinda funny - an americanization of Norwegians. It's a bit awkward to see Kirk and the rest act, behave and speak in such a manner so far removed from the "normal", Norwegian behaviour at the time. But it's an enjoyable romp, and a nice score.

Thanks, PeterD. A full Cd of the score would be nice. I hope the upcoming Marco Polo compilation has Arnold's AFRICA, TEXAS STYLE!

The Marco Polo Arnold CD is supposed to be only The Roots of Heaven and David Copperfield. Roots will have cues from the score that were not on the original soundtrack album. I agree with you that it would be great to see scores like Africa, Texas Style recorded. As I understand it, many of the scores to Arnold's major films are lost and of the ones that exist, it is unlikely they'll be recorded because the films are so little known. Chandos is releasing an Arnold film music CD soon which will have music from The Belles of St. Trinians among others.I kinda like this Anthony Mann film--based on a true story, the Norweigen underground actually blew up the ferry the heavy water was on. The sequence where they sneak into the factory is just wonderful.
Arnold's score is really good as well. Originally on Mainstream, but not included in the Mainstream scores that were re-issued on CD (Stagecoach & The Collector made it, The Wrong Box & Telemark didn't).

TRAPEZE, THE KEY, NINE HOURS TO RAMA, THE LION, TUNES OF GLORY, ROOTS OF HEAVEN, INN OF THE SIXTH HAPPINESS, HEROES OF TELEMARK -- all Malcolm Arnold LP's that have never been released on CD. Someone dropped the ball!

Yes, what a shame. And from what Lou says, it doesn't seem likely that the situation will ever be remedied, except for "Roots of Heaven." Well, at least it will be nice to have that one.By the way, a bit of "Heroes of Telemark" trivia: according to Kirk Douglas's autobiography, the man who played the captain of the ferry in the movie was the actual captain of the real ferry that was blown up by the Norwegian underground; he escaped by swimming to safety, as did others.
Come to think of it, Kirk also filmed "The Vikings" in Norway, didn't he? Hmmmm, if Thor found Kirk a bit hard to accept as a Norwegian, I wonder about Tony Curtis and Ernest Borgnine as Vikings . . .

Yes,here is another favorite of mine that has long been neglected.NINE HOURS TO RAMA is like the somewhat of the Holy Grail to me. So much great music this man wrote which sadly will never be heard.

It can still be heard, if you want to spend the money. NINE HOURS TO RAMA, THE LION, and ROOTS OF HEAVEN are all $275+ LPs. With all of this new stuff coming out, some CD company ought to reissue the Arnold LP catalog.

Indeed, PeterD, Borgnine and co. as savage vikings was more hilarious than it was seriously impressive. Great score by Nascimbene, though. On a similar note, the portrayal of vikings in 13TH WARRIOR was outright dumb (except for a few cases where actual Norwegians were applied - such as the costarrer Dennis Storhøi). It reminded me of the X-FILES episode where Mulder and Scully travel off to the Northern part of Norway to encounter a rusty, old "ghost ship". It was extremely funny (and discomforting) to listen to the americans passing as "norwegians", stumbling their way through an army of grammatical and phonetical errors. But to you guys it must have sounded real!
