I just saw this movie tonight and despite the mixed reviews I thought it was very good. It was well acted and written, and the toilet humor I had expected was absent. The voice casting of the cats was great, too. One thing, though... it didn't follow the book at all.

Anyway, on to Silvestri's score. It starts out somewhat conventional, with a number of appearance of an upbeat version of the main theme. Soon, however, that all changes with the Boat Race sequence. The Boat Race is probably one of the best cues of Silvestri's entire career. It was awesome! And from that point on, the score becomes much more intricate and, of course, excellent. The action cues are upbeat with an almost big band quality, and the more sensetive parts are just heartbreaking.

The current soundtrack has only two score cuts on it, one of them being the Boat Race sequence. Silvestri's track record for score albums (for children's films) is pretty good, so hopefully there will be a full score album. At least I hope so... anyone know?

It's a great score. Anyone who liked Mouse Hunt and The Parent Trap will definitely enjoy this one. Keep your fingers crossed for a score album.

BAH, hated it. It spent too much time on being corny and not enough on humor. Lotta kids in the audience, and almost no lauging. It wasnt that the jokes fell flat...it was that there were no jokes. The score dissapointed me, i felt it was too over dramatic. Too much for too(forgive the pun) little.
The boat race for example: talk about over done. Yes, it was a good piece of music...but its a friggin toy boat race for god's sakes. And the music as he was being chased by the cats: bad chase music and innapropriate music for the scene. it was just so damn happy. I know the audience is young, but lets add just a little bit more than "well, judging by the music there is no chance in hell he is gonna get caught"
The book was great, but this movie blew chunks. it does gain points for not being a musical, and one thing it did well(and Silvestri's score helped a lot in this fact) was setting up a good fairy tale atmosphere. As a movie, 2/5 stars...as a kid's movie id give it a 3/5.

I guess my problem is not the score itself, but its usage. Too much music...some scenes should not have had it(the scene as he was looking out from the castle would have been much better without music, or at least without Silvestri trying to cram sadness and cornyness down our throats.)
