Guys (and girls) - I can't recommend this enough. Medal of Honor by Michael Giacchino. For those of you who aren't familiar with his music, his last project was "The Lost World" for the PSX.

Williams fans, Horner fans, Goldsmith fans... there's nothing about this score that's not to like. It's based on Saving Private Ryan - but it sounds nothing like it. You can see where the music gets it's inspiration, but it takes Williams' original efforts to a new level.

For those of you that were dissatisfied w/ SPR, trust me - this will please you. Lots of great action stuff here, and it's done by a big, lush symphonic orchestra.

Now, you know I'm not the type to shove music down everyone's throat. Well, NOW I AM. Trust me here, guys. I know we don't always agree on musical tastes, but I think mine are varied enough to accomodate most.

Here's the catch - Dreamworks is only making this title available through Amazon.com. It's very exclusive.

I'm begging all of you, check this out. You won't regret it. Full length cues can be heard on Thaxton's show at:
    http://www.film.com/guide/stc_index.html

And sound clips can be heard at Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00003JAK8/103-1749977-4856651

Let me know what you think! Enjoy!
    Jeron

When I listened to the sound clips...(after numerous attempts to get my realplayer to work) I was just amazed. The score is definitely awesome...gotta say that Jeron knows his stuff. This is excellent score and I will hopefully buy it (if I can steal my mom's credit card...j/k).

Hmm I asked Jeron about that score before, and he'd never heard of.
Now he sounds like one of those infermertials!

Were you paid to say that Jeron? :-)

After hearing this on Soundtrack Cinema I imediately knew I had to have it, and will be ordering it very soon. I can not believe it's for a videogame.

I'm listening to it right now on Soundtrack Cinema, it is one of the best video game scores that I have ever heard.

Get it! I am now for sure.

Sorry Jeron, I'm going to pass on this one. I'm afraid my soundtrack listening (appreciation) is ultimately tied to the movie.

However, I am impressed by the depth of creativity that has been applied to background music for a video game.

Last week I posted basically every link available on this score with lots of info.

No one ever listens to me...

P.S. Awesome score. If you can get the clips to work, go to http://www.mohgame.com , the official web site which has some more clips in mp3.

I bought it the SECOND I heard it. Like everybody else. This guy is either going to be the next Williams or the next McNeely. I hope he gets to do some features.

I just got Medal of Honor the other day. It really is an great score. I have wanted it
for an while, however after talking with Mr. Giacchino last weekend and hearing the score on Soundtrack Cinema, I had to get it.

There is an lot of good videogame scores out there, Most are AFAIK, Japanese import games, though there are quite an few good US domestic discs, such as TND, The Dig, Medal of Honor, Lost world: Jurassic Park, Resident Evil 1&2 and many others.

Has anyone listened to Giacchino's Lost World score? I have yet to do so, well most of it that is. But it is on order at the moment. Well if you heard any other great VG scores, I'd like to hear your thoughts of them.

    Well take care.

    sabbey,
I have posted a review of Jurrassic Park:The Lost World by Giacchino a while back. The score is outstanding and even Spielberg calls him the young John Williams. Anyway, I ordered Medal of Honor soley on Jeron's advise and because I love the lost world score.

Lost World is another great effort by Giacchino, definitely worth having in any film music collection. It's heroic, dramatic, and very exciting. Giacchino develops his themes throughout the score, and it just gets better and better as the cd progresses.

In other words: You'll love it.

If you like this one, you should also check out the young Jeremy Soule's symphonic score to TOTAL ANNIHILATION. I believe soundclips are available at his site (anybody remember the URL?).

Then there's also the esteemed Bruce Broughton and his orchestral performance for HEART OF DARKNESS.

But above all, check out Michael Land's excellent LucasArts scores, such as the Wagnerian THE DIG and INDY 4. He frequently collaborates with another LucasArts regular, Clint Bajakian (OUTLAWS, MONKEY ISLAND 3, FULL THROTTLE).

There's a lot of VG scores out there, waiting to be discovered!

Oh yeah, definitely check out Total Annihilation. Jeremy Soule is a good e-buddy mine, also a young composer aspiring to ultimately do films. Check out his site at www.jeremysoule.com for sound clips. They are spectacular!

PS - I'll back Thor up on Heart of Darkness... excellent music. Of course, I'm a huge Broughton fan myself.

Mind you, for anybody who's interested: TOTAL ANNIHILATION is an excellent PC real time strategy game with a terrific soundtrack. The game is about two or three years old, but still a worthy buy if you like to play a PC game once in a while. But anyway, since it's an older game, you can get it really cheap right now (should be less than $10.-), and the soundtrack of the game is on regular CD audio tracks and plays in any regular CD player. At that price, it's even worth a shot if you don't own a PC just for the music. No need to buy an extra "soundtrack" here.

Ultima IX has a fine score by Geroge Oldziey (sp?) of Wing Commander 3 (and sequels) fame, using a real (although small) orchestra. There's even a CD release for that, but I think that one is (was?) only available in special edition packages together with the game.

And I strongly second Thor's recommendations for the LucasArts game scores by Michael Land and Clint Bajakian, who did some marvellous stuff. You can order the Grim Fanango score at the LucasArts website...which I still haven't done, but will certainly do sooner or later.

    NP: Ed Wood (Howard Shore)
