You need to spread your wings. Try some Bruce Broughton, Ennio Morricone, and a few names that you are unfamiliar with. Just experiment. Of course, you could always add a few more Goldsmith to your collection.posted 01-13-2000 05:34 PM PT (US)

Rent movies, lots of movies. Listen to the scores while you watch them. Then buy the score if you like it.For me, the score should enable you to experience the magical emotions of a movie over and over.

Hi!why not try to get some of the less well-known stuff?
james bernard, michael j. lewis, kristof komeda should be an excellent choice
if you were interested in minimal music you could listen to michael nyman or philip glass
mike oldfield is not particulyrly known for his movie-work but The Killing Fields is an interesting score
well, spread your wings (as someone mentioned above)
cheers,

Hmmm... Well Scott is definitely right about Williams and Goldsmith! Plus, those Golden Age scores cannot go wrong!Ben-Hur
Prince Valiant
King Kong
Gone With the Wind
SpartacusI would reccomend a couple others. Renting movies is a pretty good idea, also buying complilation albums, is another great idea! Occasionally I will see a compilation album with 3 or 4 scores on it that I was debating if I should get them or not.
Aaron Collins
NP: Cutthroat Island(Vladimir, get this score! Awesome!)

A great idea to just keep watching movies and picking up what you like.I see that you're mostly into Elfman which is a good start for anyone. And you seem to have picked up the right scores by Zimmer.
But, I also noticed you didn't have any Poledouris scores some of which I think you might like.
Try Conan the Barbarian & Hunt for Red October.

It's not always necessary to see the movie first in order to listen to the music. If you're like me and enjoy film music as film MUSIC, not FILM music, then go by your tastes (symphonic? what genre? etc.).If you like "dark, complex scores" (I see you like Elfman), then definitely try some Christopher Young or Elliot Goldenthal. You cannot go wrong there.

If you like Elfman you should try DOLORES CLAIBORNE (qiet and wonderful in a weird way) and TO DIE FOR.
You should also listen to Maurice Jarre (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA; GORILLAS IN THE MIST).And I have to agree with Thor if you like Elfman you will also like Young (JENNIFER 8)

Just while I'm here, I have a list of Scores I want too, but as my FSM companions and anyone else from Australia may have gathered, many scores are harder to come by and cost much more than an average CD.
I paid $40.95 for North ny Northwest.
Anyway, here's the list. Which 10 or so should I go for?Ghostbusters (this one I definetly want. Does anyone know where I could get it?)
Raise the Titanic
Conspiracy Theory
Spanish Prisoner (Is this one readliy available?)
Citizen Kane
Psycho
Vertigo
Cape Fear
Taxi Driver
The Horse Whisperer
Mission:Impossible
Batman Returns
Mars Attacks
Broken Arrow
Deep Blue Sea
Armageddon
Air Force One
The Haunting
The Mummy
Pleasantville
Apollo 13
Aliens
Courage Under Fire
Hook
Radiers of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Jurassic Park
The Lost World
AmistadYour thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!posted 01-18-2000 04:17 AM PT (US)

Wow, NxNW was that much? Here in the UK, I got my copy for less than £5!
Anyway, I recommend that you try some of the following:
Goldsmith : Air Force One, 13th Warrior, Supergirl, The Edge, The Blue Max
If you like David Arnold, you should pick up Stargate too (no, not Stargate 2).
Try also something by Bruce Broughton, he's very good.
Also, I kind of get the feeling that you like Elfman a lot (good taste, man - SFT would be proud!), so you should probably try some of the Bernard Herrmann score, like NxNW, 7th Voyage of Sinbad, or Jason & the Argonauts. Check out also a Nino Rota compilation if you can find one.

to Richard:Out of that list, I'd suggest Conspiracy Theory. Not that it's my favorite score in the world (though it's one of them), but if you love film score, Conspiracy theory is a great way to listen to something a little bit different, that still retains the qualities that make a film score so fun to listen to. Carter Burwell does a great job of mixing in a mysterious jazzy sound to his already odd style.
