    Hello,

I just received John Ottman's score for Halloween: H20 yesterday. Although not as frightening as John Carpenter's original (who can beat that? , I thought the instrumentation and orchestrations were brilliantly done.

Anyway, since I haven't seen the movie, I wanted to know if the tracks were in chronological order and, if they weren't, if there was a kind soul who could post the correct track order.

    Thanks,

    Kosh

That could be a bit tough to answer, as what is on Portait of Terror is Ottman's full composistions, which actually became hacked up and re-edited by the studio execs for the movie...

    Crono/Kyp,

Yes, they thought parts of his score were too "thoughtful". They decided instead to replace these parts by excerpts from Marco Beltrami's score to SCREAM.

According to me, Ottman's H20 is not that frightening, but the orchestrations.... They really blew me away. The number of instruments used and the way they all come together, it's really a brilliant score.

I remember the film used one cue from Beltrami's MIMIC many times during the climax. People who aren't score fans probably didn't notice, but it bothered me very much. Mimic was a perfect score for the film Mimic. It shouldn't be anything else. Beltrami was hired to compose some original music for H20 though.

As to why Ottman's music was butchered:
He explains this on his website. Not in the music section, but in an essay where he vents about test screenings. It seems that some of the music in the film was just temp tracks and Ottman was planning to do more work on it. But the original test screening came out favorable, so the studio decided to leave it the way it was. You know, just in case better music somehow made the movie worse. You can't take chances with that sort of thing.

Marco Beltrami didn't actually write any original music for H20, but a lot of the film was scored with music by him. He himself took samples of his scores for Mimic & Scream & Scream 2, & played around with them a little. A huge amount of the film was scored in this way, & it actually works quite well (particularly if you don't recognise it). Marco didn't record with an orchestra for the project.
I'm not quite sure why it is that Ottman's score wasn't used - it's pretty good stuff. Interesting to note, though, that he still scored Steve Miner's next film, Lake Placid...

Beltrami's Mimic score is used in the film, but the Portrait of Terror CD is purely Ottman's score for the film. And is which score good - Mimic or Ottman's?
