This is the WSJ best of 1999 list. If you are familiar with these, how do you think the music in these films helped overall? All About My Mother
Being John Malkovich
Buena Vista Social Club
The Dreamlife of Angels
Election
Iron Giant
Magnolia
Straight Story
Three Kings
Toy Story 2
I am a great big fan of Iron Giant, as well as Badalamenti's score for Straight Story. Do you think this is a good list of films? The WSJ doesn't normally publish a "best of" list based on popularity, which most mainstream publications do. The "popularity effect" is also a strong criticism against the Oscar awards year after year....PeterK

Where is American Beauty on this list? That was my favorite movie of the year...why isn't it on there...NOOOOOOO!
It is cool to see Toy Story 2 and Being John Malkovich on the list; they were great, too.

I must admit I have seen only one of the films on that list. I consider The Iron Giant to be one of the most beautiful films made in a very long while. Glad to hear it was listed. I hope it gets some recognition at Oscar time.Music must have played a big part in the choice of Buena Vista Social Club. It is a music documentary, after all.
The only film I have not yet seen that I have any interest in checking out is Election. I have to give WSJ credit for picking some interesting choices though.

Im with Ted. American Beauty isnt up there, so WSJ will now be ignored forever.

I've actually seen four of the listed films. One I don't think I've heard of, and the rest I don't really care to see. So there.NP: Mark Isham: "The Net"

I have only seen 2 of these movies, so I can't really comment on the second part of the original post. But where is "The Matrix?" And yes, "American Beauty?"
What is their standard? Are they looking for "artsy-type" movies? What about "Austin Powers 2?" And yes, "Phantom Menace?"

The Iron Giant is a little gem. Really, it's a beautiful movie. Disney watch out!

I have no problem with the list, I think those are good choices. Especially "The Straight Story" and "Being John Malcovich," two of my favorite films of the decade. Both had really good scores, too.James

The list is just fine (even though I'm slightly bothered by the ommision of The Talented Mr. Ripley.) As far as the music is concerned...Yes, some of the music did help, especially in TS2, BJM, and SStory. Three great scores.- A.
