I went to see the movie The Talented Mr. Ripley and saw a preview for Angela's Ashes and was surprised to see that John Williams was doing the music and was surprised that I didn't remember seeing anything about it on this site. I then went to the store to see if they had it, but they didn't. I then saw the BM cd and was surprised to see that James Horner scored. I thought I must be losing it because I don't remember seeing anything about either cd on this site. I went back, and sure enough, there were several postings. I am losing my mind.
Well, I went out and bought both cds with some of my christmas money, and I'm proud to say that both are great cds. I went back and read the big controversy about Horner ripping himself off and all I have to say about it is this: some of you analyze the music too much. Why don't you just sit back and enjoy the music. And if you don't like it when somebody rips themself off, don't buy the cd. If you bought the cd before watching the movie, next time watch the movie first, and then decide if you want the cd and quit complaining about it. I on the other hand don't mind if someone rips them self off. I bought Star Trek II just because it sounded similar to Krull, which I wasn't able to get at the time. I bought BM because I read a review that said it sounded similar to Deep Impact. Now I like Deep Impact so I knew I would like BM, so I bought it without watching the movie and I enjoy it. Now lets just say there was a chance that I didn't like the cd, I wouldn't come here and complain about it. I would take my cd back and get a refund. I have had to go through a majority of my life listening to my little brother whine and complain and I don't want to come to my favorite sight and hear more whining and complaining. I own over 250 scores and if I didn't buy anymore, and went and listened to everyone of them, one at a time, all the way through, it would take me a very long time to do it. And then I would probably go back and listen to some of them a second time and by time I finished that, I would probably be dead or my cd player would be broken.

And about Angela's Ashes, the cd is great. I agree the cd would have been a little bit better withouth the narrative, but then again, it adds a different flavor to it. I am glad to have gotten both cds.
Now I hope I don't get trashed too badly.

Couldn't agree more! (about the "rip-off" factor, that is; I'm not all that familiar with either score).James

Just a question to you guys who have purchaced the BM cd.How is it? The movie doesn't look like somthing that I want to go out and watch on the big screen. More of a rentel kind of movie. I am curious about the score though. Being that its the first score from Horner in about a year..
Any reviews coming out of you guys soon

Thanks again you guys.....

Jasom,
while I can agree with your opinion on this matter I do like to add that this is the ONLY site I know off and like where I can offer my opinions about filmscores and get some responses back. I do not see this as whining (for one thing, I do not whine. I drop kick people).
I do believe the critism towards James Horner is justified and I agree the score to BCM is good. To my understanding most people wish Horner would stop copying himself so much since he DOES have a great talent.
Last but not least, if we can't openly offer our opinions on this site out of fear we will be perceived as whiners etc, than why come here in the first place.Scott

Scott,
Very true, but the thing is that the whole Horner ripping himself off debate is very old and very tiresome. We all know he does it, so why not just accept the fact and move on. Everytime a new Horner cd is released, this same old discussion comes up and I am tired of it. I am sorry about the whining and complaining thing. I respect everyone's opinion, so I don't want anyone to feel they can't express themself. Let's just talk about something different. O.K.?

Jasom and Jeron,I think I came across a little too hostile in my last post. I apologize if this is the case. I wasn't mad or anything, I just think people who voice their opinion about Horner's tendencies have a point and with this site an outlet to do this in. Yes, it is getting old to a certain degree, but Horner continues to this. Here we are to review, talk about and critique movie scores. Isn't Horner's ripping off style part of this discussion?
I am NOT saying he is bad or his scores are bad, heck the guy fills in more spaces on my collection rack than any other composer save Williams and Goldsmith. I think the man composes beatiful melodies. And I don't mind him using certain selections from his other scores. Yet if someone points this out I can only agree with them and I can understand if someone gets upset about it.
One thing I can say for sure though, hadn't it been for certain people pointing all this out, I wouldn't be listening to scores as intense as I do now.Again,
Jasom, I hate for you to think I was mad at you or anything, for I DO understand your point as well.
And Jeron,
thanks for making that comment, it made me re-read my statement and see that I DID come across way too hostile.Love,

Scott,
I know you are not mad at me. Besides, I am a very easy going person and don't get mad very often. I understand your view point as well and obviously you are not one of these so called "whiners and complainers." There are just some people on here who do this way too much. I usually don't post stuff very much, but sometimes I just get frustrated at have to say something. I try not to offend anyone. We all are movie score fanatics, and there are not too many of us in this world, so lets all just try to be friends because we can accomplish more if we work together.Jasom

Well, this post makes me feel so warm and cozy! Scott is sending mixed messages! "You guys are thinking I am a hostile guy"
This coming from a guy who says "I drop kick them!"
First off, Angela's Ashes is gorgeous. A beautiful display of John Williams' music. Another top-notched score!
I don't have much to say about BCM. I personally think it's a mediocre score. Has nothing to do with the "rip offs." First off, every composer rips themselves off and even other composers. I am a composer myself and I feel free to grab ideas, motifs, or even whole themes, and put them in a nother work of mine. Here's a funny story! I just completed a new orchestral work called The Great Adventure. I read it down with the symphony tonight and I slowly started to realize "Hey this sounds like Empire Strikes Back" and at the very ending the piece closes with almost note for note the Imperial March ending. The thing is I still get to get it published and people still enjoy it! "Rip-off" or no "rip-off" people still enjoy the music, thats all that matters!

Aaron,
thank you for you post. I have been wondering for some time now if it could be that Horner is not conciously re-using material but that it just happens because some themes are in his subcouncious. I remember a melody I kinda composed and years later heard almost the identical tune in A Far off Place.By the Way Aaron,
I'd never drop kick YOU (especially with my back being the way it is right now), I'd just choke you to death.
