Does anyone know who is rumered to be scoring this film? The trailer looked really cool, reminded me of "2001" in a way. Also what scores it the trailer music form?

Ennio Morricone is the composer attached to the film as of right now.I'm somewhat intrigued as to what he'll come up with for this action/sci-fi film. But he seems to be a strange choice in my opinion.I don't recall him ever writing a score for this type of movie.

Trailer music is from Vangelis's "1491". I wish they would've used the fully orchestral version from "Cinema Choral Classics" though...sounds better than synth.

1491? Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1491?

I am thrilled that Morricone is involved with this project. I just hope that his sometimes "different" type of music isn't rejected. Fortunately, dePalma is the type of director who enjoys experimenting.

Thanks guys. Not to be a werid person or anything, but why not someone like Burwell or James Newton Howard? I think one of them would be a better choice.

Burwell and Newton Howard would deliver great scores because their talents in this field have been shown already, and we know that they are capable of a great score for this type of film...

HOWEVER, Morricone has no notoriety in this field, and in my opinion, that is exactly why he will deliver an amazing score.

Having Morricone on this project sounds like a great thing! Have any of you seen the 1982 movie The Thing, scored by Morricone? I have a feeling this new score may turn out like that thing. Things being what things will be, this is indeed a good thing in my book. This thing was so good in fact, this thread reminds me of the thing so much, I am now listening to the thing.

    Cinema:
Go to the store right now and buy a copy of The Mission. It is a gap in your CD collection that cries out across the web for fulfillment.

His music sounds like Morricone. There's simply no other way to put. He's one of the best from spaghetti westerns to heart-wrenching dramas. Other Morricone gaps (besides The Mission) in your CD collection:

    Cinema Paradiso
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Once Upon a Time in the West

Morricone is great at emotional melodies. His suspense music is just a little too brilliant though. It can be really untonal and hard on the ears. I hope "Mission to Mars" does not contain too much of this. Having said that, Morricone composed nothing but suspense music for "The Thing", and it had a few moments where it was oddly beautiful. One cue (underscoring the scene where Kurt Russell discovers a spaceship) is shiver-inducing. Morricone can have surprises up his sleeves. That's what makes me anticipate this new project even more.

    Cinema,

Also try "The Untouchables", it is a good Morricone sampler and one of his best.

Am I the only one that's picked up "The Legend of 1900" yet? I don't want to say you HAVE to get this score, because if you get it and hate it, you'll be mad at me. But in my opinion, it's one of the best scores this year. I truly find it to be inspired. I was so glad when it was nominated for a Golden Globe, and I hope it's not forgotten around Oscar time.
So stick that in the gap in your CD collection.

Legend of 1900 is an excellent score, but I think there are better Morricone scores to recommend to a person who currently has none in their collection. 1900 is probably a more enjoyable score to people who are already fans of his work, because he tries something new by blending short, almost out of place, jazz orchestrations with his usual harmonic themes. Bulworth is also a great score with a theme similar, if not superior, to 1900.

I'll buy that Al. You're probably right.

But about "Bulworth." I HATED that film, so unfortunately, the music was lost on me. I don't remember one bit of it. I was too busy not liking the movie.

    S Smith,

The reason that you do not remember much of Morricone's Bulworth score is probably because barely any of it made it into the film. The album contains some great music split into two suites.

Suite one is basically a seventeen minute version of the beautiful main theme. It is performed in different ways throughout. Unfortunately, the female vocal has a few appearances that are just hard on the ears.

Suite two begins with odd comedic chase music that is really quite catchy. Its only appearance in the film was a brief snippet that was mixed in with a rap song during a car chase. The rest of the track is unlistenable suspense music.

You may want to give it a try. I think there is a sound clip at cinemusic.net if you would like to preview it. The first track is the one that makes the CD worth the price.
