I've heard both are great. I only have The Horse Whisperer. I don't listen to it much, but that doesn't mean anything. It's a good score.Jeron

I really love Shawshank, but there's something about the themes and the flowing, quiet undertones of The Horse Whisperer that really appeal more to me. Thomas Newman is the master of 'understatement' and this score really showcases some of his best talents. For some odd reason, I really get attached to Newman's scores for books I have read. I think that is why I love The Green Mile and The Horse Whisperer so much. I like anticipating the score & the visual in contrast with the literature piece.

I prefer "Scent of a Woman". It's a beautiful T. Newman score, and it has a wonderful, sweeping finale. Remember the music in the trailer to Primary Colors?NP - Snow Falling On Cedars

That depends on what you're looking for. If you want a score that will appeal to your heart and take to the top emotionally the whole way through, get Horse Whisperer. On the other hand, Shawshank has many more moments for the mind. Its music is usually more reflective than anything else, although in a few tracks (e.g. "Redemption," "End Titles") an extreme emotional high is reached.
It's really just a case of apples and oranges. If you're not satisfied when all these posts are said and done, my suggestion would be the good ol' "Eeny, meeny, meiny, moe."

Shawshank man. Horse Whisperer isnt nearly as good, or as memorable(that can be said with no disrespect to Horse Whisperer).

I say get Meet Joe Black!! It's some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard, and it still can move me to damp eyes. I like Horse Whisperer better than Shawshank because it has many great cues such as track 12, 26, and 27--some of my all-time favorite score cues. I also enjoy Scent of a Woman, but it seems like it's missing something at around only 30 minutes of score.Michel
PS: Thomas Newman's American Beauty score is coming out this month! :-) It's a Varese release though. :-(posted 01-08-2000 12:39 AM PT (US)

I got Meet Joe Black and The Green Mile today, bringing my total purchases of Thomas Newman scores up to an unimpressive 4 (the other two I own being Shawshank Redemption and The Horse Whisperer)....This man is officialy my fave composer, no doubt about it, yet I feel, huh, I know, I am missing out on a lot of his great scores, so I too would like some help. What should I get next? Heck, I may even go into town again tomorrow and buy more of his stuff right away!!

I agree Dan. TN is officially my favorite composer, too. I have The Horse Whisperer, Scent of a Woman, Up Close and Personal, Threesome/American Buffalo, How to Make an American Quilt, The Green Mile, Meet Joe Black, and The Shawshank Redemption. I will be buying American Beauty when the score (not the soundtrack) comes out on Varese January 25th according to CDNow. Has anyone heard Unstrung Heroes, The Player, Fried Green Tomatoes or any other TN scores I did not mention? What are some other good ones?Michel

The War is very good, especially the last couple of tracks. If you definitely have to chosse between 'Shawshank' and 'Horse,' I'd say get 'Horse,' 'just cause it's got more variety to it. Shaw is more of a darker score woth some beautiful tyunes at the end.
But of course, if you can, get both of themAnd YES...Meet Joe Black is one of the most beautiful scores I have ever heard! DEfinitely my fave of the TN compositions.

Now here's one thing that upsets me regarding The Shawshank Redemption. I finally got my hands on the DVD yesterday, and I've said before on this site the CD was missing a few cues, one of them ebing a truly beautiful theme that appears in the movie a few times. Now I was asked a while ago where these cues appeared, and I never had the time to flick over my VHS to name the scenes, but if you have the region1 DVD:
50:41 to 51:23
1:35:07 to 1:35: 55At the above times in the movie comes the cue I love the most on the score, and it aint on the CD. D'OH!

The only Thomas Newman score I have is The Player. If his other scores are anything like this themeless garbage then I wouldn't buy any others. I recently got Shawshank on DVD and when I get a chance to watch it I am really going to pay attention to the score. Hopefully it will reopen my eyes to this obviously skilled composer.Audacity

I actually liked the score to The Player since the day I first saw the movie way back at the time of it's release. You want to dispose of your copy Audacity? I have yet to buy it...This is the 2nd time you've recommended Little Women to me isn't it Scott? Methinks it should be the one I get next. Cheers!
