I just saw The Talented Mr. Ripley this weekend--the score is beautiful. Anybody agree? The movie isn't worth all the raves though--it definetely should have been a half hour shorter.

I enjoyed the movie inmensely the way it was, mind you...As for the score, very haunting tunes! A truly great tribute to the late Bernard Herrmann. I'm sure he's rolling over in his grave right now. I bought the CD thinking there weren't enough score tracks on the CD, but to my surprise, all were present. Some of them are just repeated a couple of times throughout the film, that's all. I even liked the jazz/blues songs. They fit the mood very well. Buy this CD (***1/2/*****)- A.

The whole movie felt like a Hitchcock film, right up to the blond heroine. I thought it was excellent...It had my favorite ending of any movie this whole year (though I haven't seen Fight Club, and if anyone tells me what happened there I will do something bad to them.)

Fight Club rules Ted.
As for Ripley's ending...SUCKED COMPLETE AND TOTAL ASS. basically it ended in mid-sentence. They could have cut it off an hour before to the same effect. I know it is a series...but in a movie you have to have a resolution, even if it carries on to later films.
another waste of time from the highly overrated Minghella. I had high hopes for this so that i could forgive his win for English Patient. Not happening.Good score tho

SPOILER BELOW:Matt,
For me, the film did have a resolution, and not to give it away too much, I thought it was supposed to give you the impression that he was suffering a never-ending nightmare. You weren't supposed to be satisfied or anything like that. I was just left with the horrible idea that he could and would do this forever (he certainly pulled it off well in the movie), and because of that he is trapped in the "basement/closet" of his own soul, forced to live in a tragic paradise he himself created.Oh, and yes...The score was very good.
Just my thoughts on that.

I agree with Ted's assessment of the ending...though Ripley had done some terrible things, I still had this feeling of sadness for the character...his world of his own creating had taken charge and he could not control it anymore...especially the final scene where he thought he had finally achieved a measure of happiness and acceptance, he had to do what he did to preserve all the lies he had created. A really good ending to a film that ranks with Fight Club; I would also rank with the ending of Man on the Moon.NP: the radio
