Tie between 2001 and 12 Angry Men.

2001 takes the cake for all it's visual splendor and mystery, and 12 Angry Men has the best script and acting I've seen.

    Citizen Kane.

By far the best ever. That is not to say that there aren't many others that are magnificent. Each one is a personal preference.

Although I do have to say, I don't know if I would have it with me as part of a "Desert Island Movie" theme, I'd probably take 2001. I've watched that movie for almost 30 years and am still in awe of it. It is still the most "realistic" of any science fiction film ever made.

Woah, forgot Patton. Also add Kubrik's only masterpiece: Dr Strangelove. Just look at the big board!

Whoa, Matt. Did I hear you wrong, or did you say Dr. Strangelove was Stanley Kubrick's only masterpiece?

What about 2001, or a Clockwork Orange, or Full Metal Jacket, Paths of Glory, or even...dare I say...Spartacus?

I am sorry, but Stanley Kubrick is to me as Danny Elfman is to SFT: a god.

You heard right Ted. only..OOOOOOOOONLYYYYYYYY!!! MUAHAHAHAA.
2001 sucked, bad acting, bad plot(but could have been good with another director), bad direction...but OOOOH, it was technically accurate. Fu*k that sh*t, if i have to sacrifice silence in space to get a good movie then so be it. full metal jacket was decent, but lacked enough warmth to justify its existance. Never cared less about the vietnam war as i did during that one. Spartacus was good but no masterpiece. seriously had no problems with it...actually enjoyed it. It was good, even enjoyable...but masterpiece? nahh.

    Best movie? Dark City (1998).

Citizen Kane? I saw the film...
I'm not seeing how it's this good as everyone claims it is. I can see how it's influential though...

and off the subject... best anime: Ghost in the Shell, or maybe Nausicaa... or maybe Grave of the Fireflies ah nevermind

I have yet to see many of the films being named. Although in my mind I believe ROCKY is one of the best. One of my all time favs with one of the greatest themes ever composed. There are a lot of great movies out there and to pick a #1 is just nuts. I'd say breaking it down by genre would be more realistic and then again it's all a matter of personal preference.

    Raiders of the Lost Ark.

At least that is for me personally. When I saw that movie in the 3rd grade it changed my little life.

Plus it was the first soundtrack I bought
