I know, I know, tough topic, but I'll give it a try anyway.
Who do you think are the greatest film composers of this century?

    My choices:
    Bernard Herrmann,
    George Korngold,
    Alfred Newmann,
    D. Tiomkin (don't know how to spell it right now),
    Aaron Copeland,
    Elmer Bernstein,
    Jerry Goldsmith,
    John Williams,
    John Scott,
    John Barry,
    Thomas Newmann

    Those are my choices.

    Scott

Well, this is a tough question. First off, I want to apologize for my scarcity in comments and replies. I have actually been really busy with a lot of music stuff. I have just completed a score for a Natl. Geographic movie titled Mother Ocean. I am also working on two films that will be sent to various festivals. Well enough about me, let's get to the subject on hand.

First of all Scott, it is spelled Dimitri Tiomkin.

Your list lacks a couple of great composers for film.

    Franz Waxman
    Miklos Rozsa
    and Sergei Prokofiev

All three of these composers should definitely be added to the list!

    You guys are forgetting:

    Aaron Copland
    Carl Orff
    Juaquin Rodrigo

All classical composers from this century, and all good.

    Robin,

I believe the question was "greatest film composers of the 20th century?"

But, if we were analyzing composers of the 20th century, I'd like to name a few not listed above.

-Stravinsky(probably the greatest composer of the 20th century)
    -Gustav Holst
    -George Gershwin
-John Phillip Sousa(What would be played at the closing of concerts, if we did not have Sousa!)
    -Richard Strauss
    -and of course: Micheal Jackson

    Matt,
no ski accident. Of all things got hurt during martial arts, like two days after my blue belt test. It started hurting during training, but being the moron I am I ignored the pain and continued. Well, the next day I walked around like Quasimodo holding my lower back like the grandfather on the Simpson wanting to curse like the brats on South Park.
After three days of this I went to the hospital. Remedy: Three days off from work, two weeks no martial arts. An pills. Lots of pills.

    Scott

    Thanks for caring.

    Matt,
the main art we practice is Shaolin Chu Fa (they tell me essentially the same style as in the Matrix).
We also incorporate Karate and to a lesser extend Jiu Jitsu.
It's funny, just saw the Matrix the other day (for the second time), and recognized some of the moves we learned. The first time I saw the film, when it came out, I hadn't enrolled yet.
I tell you, this two weeks off is killing me though, I love martial arts.

    Scott

BTW, ever got kicked in the sheen? Happens to me constantly. The other day I had this big bump on my sheen it looked like Mammoths little brother.

Blocked a kick with my shin several times in a row..hurt like hell. was wearing pads tho.
heh, screwed up my knee again

As for Matrix-mostly Praying Mantis and Wu Shu(Woo Ping's art) to my knowledge...but hey, plenty of arts that use other styles.
