37) The Green MileFrank Darabont had some very nice and deserving things to say about Newman and the score in the liner notes, including:
"As a collaborator, he displays a remarkable lack of ego, always seeking input from those around him, never viewing his musical ideas as unassailable or above critique. As a composer, there is none better for conveying a sense of wonder, adding a touch of irony, giving a hint of mischief. More to the point of what a great score needs to accomplish, nobody infuses emotion into a scene better than Tom—at this, he is a prodigy, for never does the audience sense his ministrations being applied, never do they feel manipulated. His is a light touch indeed, nimbly avoiding at all turns the obvious or heavy-handed. Newman sneaks into a scene on little cat feet and weaves his magic in a way that leaves the listener unaware that the spell is being woven at all—and yet helpless not to respond to its emotional pull. His work possesses rare clarity and focus, accomplishing with seeming ease whatever the scene requires of him—whether the orchestration is spare and diminutive, or as lush and expansive as any classic film score from years past."

This score is truly magnificent, clearly one of Newman's best achievements. There is one standout theme that is represented in various ways in several cues. Great orchestration and nicely prepared. The total CD runs just over 74 minutes, with the score (less the 5 song tracks) tracks running an hour.I think that the tracks "Punishment", "Coffey On The Mile", "The Green Mile" and "Red Over Green" are some of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. Almost every piece of music in the movie is on the CD.
Pick this up and enjoy. Newman always amazes...this is no expection.
