Amazing, just amazing.Since I found out that Matt and Dave both are in Martial Arts and since I am also in it, I was just wondering who else is a member of the Matrix club?
Matt, we're having a week of sparring...how do you train for sparring and how do you incorporate the moves into it.
Both of ya, how long have you been in Marital Arts and do you train with music?
Dave, what system do you belong to?

Ben,
the Matrix Club is something I just made up when I wrote the topic, in other words, to my knowledge it doesn't exist. I do that a lot...sorry.Tim, what you study sounds very intersting.
I myself study the Shaolin Chuan Fa (Small Forest Fist Law)it's a Wu Shu/Kung Fu style. Our system also incorporates a lot of Karate moves and some Jiu Jitsu.
By the way, the trainer created the marital arts movement in the Matrix was a Wu Shu master.Later,

You mean Woo Ping? he rocks.
I incorporate moves by watching the sparring sequence over and over on DVD and learning the choreography. Then I use good kick combos that I see. The one i just used happened after the flying triple front kick(i wish i could do THAT). he does a reverse spinning hook kick(which i cannot do yet, so I just do a crescent) with his left leg, followed by a crescent, roundhouse, and then front kick all with his front(right) leg. Works quite well.
we train in class by doing drills, and we dont have music(which sucks, if i had the techno piece from the matrix i could move faster).
My at home practice is basically just learning the moves from the Matrix with hopes of using them later.
As for how long: only started at the end of last year, im a yellow now and by the end of this school year i will be green with blue stripe. I took Aikido when i was a little kid, but that was over a decade ago.
This summer im starting Kung Fu, and over my (6 week) winter break i will be taking Tai Chi, not the exercise thing, but that actual style which is very similar to Kung Fu.[This message has been edited by Matt (edited 10-28-99).]

I study Aki-Jitsu, an old soft style which aikido is based on. I don't think there are many scores that you can practice to, unless you count Mortal Kombat or something. I like to listen to Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim or The Crystal Method.

Matt,
thanks; you gave me some excellent pointers.
I just started in August and have just received my purple belt (I'm really in to it).
I should clarify that I only practice with music at home, we do not have music playing at the dojo (which of course sucks).Ben,
the way I practice at home is like this: I put on a soundtrack cd (usually Jerry Goldsmith) and practice fast and hard when the cues are fast. I practice in slow motion when the cues are slow. In other words, my movements adjust to the beat of the music which becomes interesting when you have a track where slow and fast beats are mixed.Scott

Scott, a question for ya(tho anyone can answer). Does your class take place on a wooden floor or do you have a mat? We are in the school's basketball court which is wooden, and so my feet are basically covered with dead skin.
Oh, some good music for working out and practicing to is the various artists Matrix soundtrack, and Run Lola Run. Basically fast techno pieces.
anyway, got class in the morning(well afternoon, but 1PM is morning on a saturday for me), gotta run.
-Peace, Matt

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I am/was in a style called Ryu-Kempo. It is a very good striking style. I practice on my own now....I was tired of paying the fees in class. It seemed more like a business then a class on self defenses. When I work out.....hmmmm if i listen to music it is usually fast paced. I couldn't tell you right now I cant think...I am just a little drunk.
have a good night alll.............I cant wait until Sleepy HOLLOW..

Matt,
we practice on thin carpet. Only during certain sparring sessions or take down excercises do we bring out the maps.
It's funny we're talking about all of this, because yesterday we sparred for the first time with music. It was great, except I performed a wrong kick and almost broke my foot.Anyway, Dave,
about practicing on your own because your classes have become too business like, this is own complaint I have heard and read about a lot. Not necassarily in our dojo but through various pipelines.
I don't know how much you're paying but I'm paying $55.00 a month and go on the average six times a week.
I love it, should have taken it up a long time ago. All that to say this, I think you will only get out of the classes what you invest into it (time and effort). Yet I have heard of a lot of places that are rather divious in their dealings.Okay, I'm rambling better go...
Thanks Matt for your suggestions, I'm going to get those cd's next week.

Scott, another good place to get moves is from Tekken 3. they use real masters to motion-capture the characters, so you get great(and frequently real) moves from many different styles. Just another place you can get moves from, another source is from any movie that Woo Ping choreographed(so most jet li flicks).
