T&A class? They have a class for that in Hollywood? For directors, writers or producers? Is Aaron Spelling the professor?

    No Hal,
you didn't do anything wrong, I'm just wondering how you can give theses awards to scores like Legends of the Fall, Robin Hood or Conan or the Postman? I think these are all very well composed scores.

    Hmmmm...very odd indeed

    Scott

    Marc,

Let me know what the entrance fee is to this T&A class cause I am there. I wonder what the homework would be for that class.

Well, Scott I'll tell you. It's not really that odd. Just a difference of opinion.

I just couldn't stand any of these scores. I could go on at length to teell you why but I'll keep it brief.

Conan the Barbarian was sheer brilliance and Poledouris is one of my favorites but he just dropped the ball on the sequel. Maybw it's not fair to compare but even on it's own Conan The Destroyer was thin and just plain dusty sounding.

Prince of Thieves. Believe me... I know what it means to disagree with someone about this score because I and a friend of mine were so divided that we could have gone to blows over it. I don't like the score because it strove for bold Korngoldian gestures and just ended up sounding fake. I like Micheal Kamen sometimes (Don Juan de Marco and Baron Munchausen are some of my favorite Kamen scores) but his orchestrations come across as too contemporary sounding for this sort of period thing where an authentic sound is very important. Whenever the music came up in the movie I found myself wishing for a different score to be playing.

The Postman. I love Wyatt Earp. That's a great Newton Howard score. The postman was just big for the sake of being big but it just never amounted to anything. Shaun Murphy's gloppy sound design didn't help much either.

The there's Legends of the Fall. Don't throw stones at me but I HATED this score. For one reason the music started in the first frame and almost never shut up. It was one of those of many Horner scores that seemed to always be whining for a reaction or attention from the audience. All it did for me was get on my nerves.

I'm not calling anyone who loves these score any names... They simply didn't work for me. In fact, I think, they each hurt the films they were in.

    Hal, are you crazy??????

Prince of Thieves was the score that got me into this music. Man, I love that music. One of my all-time favs.

Legends of the Fall, come on now. This is great music. I usually don't like Horner (actually, I love his music but he pisses me off because he is too repetitive), but this is one good one. Please, try listening to them again. At least Robin Hood, because that one is amazing!

Robin and Scott. I'm not crazy. I've really given all these scores all the chance they need. But, guys, it's cool because I know there are things that I love that some of you will go "Blech!!!" at.

    Hal,
I respect your opinion and indeed I understand it. Of course I would disagree, but I do know that a lot of it is taste preference.

    Anyway,
    we still like ya

Scott- sorry about my late reply. Have you seen Zimmer's FYC Academy tape? True. There is stuff on original soundtrack that he did not write. However, the FYC tape contains Gospel music that he did write. It is not as complex as William's Rosewood writing, but, as I said before, even though I am not a Zimmer fan, I believe Hans' work was more effective.

About Prince of Thieves- the only thing really great about the score is its fanfare that was used during the Morgan Creek logo then and for years afterwards.

Absolutely, Dan. Goldenthal is a talent not to be wasted. He should go back to scoring the good films...

    like Demolition Man.
