What do you think about Williams' score for the Jurassic Park: The Lost World? Considering that Jurassic Park was the film that introduced me to Williams' music, I have shied away from buying the score because of its rather mixed reviews and the "papier-mâché" cd case. I've seen the film twice and for some reason I can't remember very much of the score. Maybe I can't remember because of all the sound effects. Then maybe I need to see the movie a third time to make up my mind. Anyway tell me what you think of the score.

I would say that "The Lost World" is'nt a classic but still makes interesting listening. There's a lot of use of percussion and congos etc and in some ways is reminiscent of those 50's and 60's Tarzan movies with an element of Max Steiner's music for King Kong e.g. "Skull Island" compared to some of "The Hunt" music from "Lost World". There's a lot of big brass themes and some scary music similar to "Jurassic Park". Overall a different feel to the 1st soundtrack concentrating more on Jungle type rhythms as mentioned before. If I marked it out of 5 I'd give it about 3 and a half. Gae NP Sinfonia antartica (Ralph Vaughan Williams)

Avery good score. It is very different from Jurassic Park, with just a few of the themes being carried over. It is very "Safari" style like the Tarzan and Ramar of the Jungle pics. Which, if you think about it makes sense.

When it first came out I listened to it for about a week steady. I may have to dig it out and listen again.

Like others have said, it is very good. I especially like the jungle sounds which are good when I read the Tarzan books.

My opinion of the score is the same as that of the movie itself... I like it A LOT, but it's worlds (or islands ) away from Jurassic Park. It's much darker and much more gore-and-action. But it's intelligent, too. For comparison, think of the JP track "Denis Steals the Embryos"... make it three times louder, more melodic, and stretch it out for an hour. And in a hint of the original JP theme and you have a pretty bad description on my part. Sorry. And the CD also contains a couple of cues that didn't make it to the movie. I have only two complaints... (1) The four-note "raptor" motif from JP wasn't reused, and (2) the end credits of the CD are all messed up and the dramatic effect the finale had in the movie is completely lost.
4 1/2 out of 5 for the music
3 1/2 out of 5 for the CD (yes, the packaging is horrible... I put mine in a jewel case after I got it)

    I forgot one thing...
If you do buy it, make sure when you listen to the second track, "Island Prologue," that you have the volume up really high and the bass up to MAX. I did this and I could hear papers rustling in my room from the vibration it caused.

I must say, I was very dissapointed by the movie, and the CD at first.. but those are two different stories. The movie, because it was weak. it was obviously only there to sell toys and show off F/X unlike the first movie.. it was so far away to following the point of the book, that it made my head spin. The CD on the other hand.. I can say what threw me off was the fact that it wasn't very thematic. The first one came up with several different themes, and was a lot of fun to listen to.. the second one was better served as mood music.. and I'll say, it does a good job. I don't want to say it's something it's not.. it's certainly not Williams' finest score.. but it is definently not his worst.

    James,
    I agree with you.
And what is it with this End Title trend lately. Either they are not included at all (Jerry Goldsmith does this more and more as well as James Newton Howard) or they are completely altered as in LW. I mean what is the logic of replacing the island theme with the Brachisorous theme. I don't get it.Yauck.

I thought no one had ever noticed the raptor motif. Too bad John Williams didnīt include it in this score. About the jungle music, I loved the music in "Jurassic Park Gate" and the wee bit part in "Eye to Eye" better than the salsa music in this movie. I hope John Williams does a recording of "The Hunt" and the theme tracks with the Boston Pops.

    Sebulba,
I think your comments with get it were directed towards me. I am a big fan of the Lost Word mind you, and I think in certain ways it is a fitting addition to Jurrassic. I just don't understand why the End Title is different from the movie.

I really don't know why they do that either. Maybe they figure end titles are just repeats of cues (usually), and rather than repeat stuff, they figure they'll give us something else. I don't know. Just a thought that occurd to me. But I don't like it either.

Oh I enyoed TLW score too, was very good, dark and moody. Good stuff, though more use of the JP theme would have been welcomed. I hate the packaging of the disc, no notes from Spielberg or anything. Grrr....

Still, as said, I do like it. And I smiled when I saw Williams pefrom TLW theme with the LSO before my eye last year.

    Scott:
Hehe, yeah, I have that score. It is a lot better than the movie score.. in my humble opinion. I thought it sounded more appropriate to the type of mood. The Lost World seemed almost... rushed. I had a hard time believing it was John Williams.. lets just put it that way.
