After the Alien debate I thought:"Let's see what everyone things about Star Trek".
So, in which order would you put the Star Trek films.
I won't give you my pick just yet, because honestly, I have to listen to 'em all tonight to confirm my first hunch.
This is going to be interesting.
Here for those who don't remember all the movies:
Star Trek - The Motion Picture
Star Trek - The Wrath of Kahn
Star Trek - The Search for Spock
Star Trek - (I forgot the subtitle, it's the one with the whale though)
Star Trek - (Forgot that one too, what's the matter with me today. It's the one directed by Shatner)
Star Trek - The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek - Generations (?)
Star Trek - First Contact
Star Trek - InsurrectionI know, I know, a lot of films, just try to get through it I guess...

Oh my gosh... Scott, you did not just spell it "Treck." You should be slapped! Star Trek, my good sir. Spell it with dignity and pride.
Ok, as for order... hmmm, this is gonna be hard. I love all the movies and the music. Here goes:
1) The Motion Picture
2) The Wrath of Khan
3) First Contact
4) Undiscovered Country
5) The Final Frontier
6) The Voyage Home
7) Generations
8) Insurrection
9) The Search for SpockOk, so - there's my order. Did I hit the target or completely throw your projections off?

I'm not really sure how I would rate all of them, but I will say this. "Star Trek V" was the worst. In my opinion anyway. It's at the bottom of the list.

I can see where "The Final Frontier" might not be everyone's favorite movie (personally, I thought it was classic trek) - but the score is nothing to be shunned. Goldsmith employs his fanfare theme in various ways, incorporating it in several action cues and then also developed the theme that would later be used as a secondary theme in "First Contact." If you aren't a Goldsmith fan, well - of course you won't appreciate the music as much as it really should be appreciated. But either way, it's definitely not a bad score. At all.~Jeron

Jeron,
I don't know what was wrong with me. I'm a big Trekker (not Trekkie). How could I have made such a mistake? And over and over. Whew, at least I spelled right in the new topic section.
Anyway,
here is my order:The Motion Picture
First Contact
Final Frontier
Undiscovered Country
Insurrection
Wrath of Kahn
Search for Spock
Voyage Home
GenerationsAs for Final Frontier, you Jeron, and I seem to be the only people who actually enjoyed that movie. As to the score, I think it's a very good one indeed.
Anyway, I'm going to Blockbuster to rent South Park (NOT)

Okay,I have to first say I'm a "closet trekkie", I only come out of that closet whenever the movies get released. After Insurrection- I could see how I might stay in the closet for a while.
But, so far as the music is concerned: here's my ranking- which I hate to do, but oh well.
The Motion Picture - The Wrath of Khan (Tie)
The Search For Spock
First Contact
The Undiscovered Country
The Voyage Home
Insurrection
Generations
Final FrontierThe only reason Final Frontier is last is because of the movie- otherwise my honest opinion is that the only so-called "least accetpable" score is Star Trek IV. IT's too short a score, not enough music by the Yellowjackets, and I think Alan Silvestri should've done that score

Don't get me wrong, it's one of my favorites, every one of those soundtracks is absolutely listenable- if only the movies had been as good.posted 09-27-1999 12:31 PM PT (US)

The only thing I don't get IS the criticism. I mean, sure... a good movie is a good movie. I think Star Trek is a different animal. When you look at episodic Star Trek, you have your good episodes and your bad ones. Such is life. Every moment is just not great. Oh bummer. Get over it.The characters certainly don't lead perfect lives, the stories aren't always incredibly awesome. Just accept it. It's more real that way (if you can get real w/ Star Trek AT ALL... certainly more so than Star Wars of course).
Same goes with the movies. You have your good stories and your bad ones. It all contributes to the Star Trek universe and makes it what it is. Star Trek is still an awesome thing. I think very highly of each movie - not because they are all superb and noteworthy, but because they add to the diversity and uniqueness of the Star Trek universe.
Same goes with the film scores as well - and yes, I agree that EVERY SINGLE Star Trek score is completely listenable AND enjoyable.
I hope I'm not sounding wacko here... lemme know if you get what I'm saying. I think it's reasonable.

Speaking of Star Trek, did anyone watch the Voyager season premiere? First of all, best Voyager I've seen since Caretaker. Secondly, it had a real pretty track of music towards the end of the episode, when Voyager was chasing the Equinox. I know this is a little of topic, so I hope you all don't mind.

I love Star Trek. The main title of The Next Generation is what got me into film scores and soundtracks here's my list. First Contact was the first soundtrack I ever bought. Know some of you must think that I am crazy but I have every Star trek score except the first one!1. First Contact (Great)
2. V The Final Frontier (The great score for a sub-par film)
3. VI The Undiscovered Country
5. Insurrection (The synth can be a little irritable but ignore it.)
4. The Motion Picture (Would be higher on list if movie was better and the V'Ger theme hadn't been so annoying. Ilia's, The Klingon, and Main Title were the best ever from Goldsmith.)
6. Generations (Great work from a first time film composer, could have been better)
7. IV The Voyage Home (An average comedy score for great film. Nothing very dramatic)
8. II The Wrath of Khan (Poor)
9. III The Seach for Spock (Poor)[This message has been edited by Aaron R. Brown (edited 10-01-99).]

Hey James, I read this somewhere:
quote:
The reason given for Kes's departure, is that the writers didn't have enough ideas anymore for the character. Since Kes is the only character on board that isn't supposed to be or trying to be a model officer, the human side of the problems encountered can only be played off Kes. It therefore begs the question whether writers that don't see stories for Kes, or involvement of Kes in other stories, are suited to write Startrek stories. Startrek stories need to have some problem or issue which is both scifi and involves a character on a personal level. Taking Kes out of the Voyager chemistry severely damages the ability to make proper Startrek stories work.Fortunately for the writers the official reason given is not the real reason. To further 'sex-up' the series a new character was introduced (7/9) which has and showed certain physical attributes that were out of all proportions. Note that even with the enormous amount of advertising for that fourth season, the average viewing figures without Kes and with 7/9 were lower than the episodes with Kes and without 7/9. But one character had to leave to make way for 7/9.
Harry Kim was selected as the character that was to leave. But based on an online poll (and we all know how unreliable online polls are) of a magazine, in which the actor was in the top 50, the producers decided that having such a popular person on the show would be free publicity. They decided to keep Kim. No announcement was made to the actors as to who had to leave, but Ethan Phillips (Neelix) fully expected to be the one.
The first episode of the fourth season sees Harry Kim recover from his fatal illness. No one leaves yet. The script for the second episode was sent to the actors. Jennifer must have been thrilled to see another episode that features Kes and her exploration of her mental abilities. She must have been wondering what miracle the writers had come up with to solve the problems threatening the ship and Kes herself. The curiosity must have been on a high when Kes is in the shuttle, transforms to a higher level of existence, and sends the ship ten years closer to home. How are they now going to find Kes back? She turns the page. "The End". They do not find Kes back, Jennifer is the one who gets fired. No one had told her.
It gets worse. The producers didn't even have a proper reason to select Kes. I gave one argument earlier why it harms the series if Kes is not there, and I can give more. But they had no counter-argument as far as I know. Kim would be logical, since his personality makes that he doesn't do much and doesn't get involved, unlike Kes's personality. Neelix would be the next logical choice, since Startrek fans hate him (I don't, I just think he's flawed. I loved the Jetrel episode).
One producer, who has fortunately left now and who has been a destructive force towards Startrek: Voyager on other occasions as well, had a little feud with another producer. This second one liked Kes, so the first disliked Kes. Or, the first disliked Kes, so the second liked her. In any case it was petty. Getting rid of Kim was the second producer's idea, and when (s)he was 'proven' wrong by the online poll, the first producer had a chance to get back at him/her. That's why Jennifer Lien was so coldly fired. And that's how they killed the last shred of humanity on Startrek: Voyager, just to satisfy their childish needs.
Is that true?

I love the classical Star Trek, but Next Generation is too much "politically correct" and slow for me...Anyway, here are my Trek favorites:
Movies:
1) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn (great vilain and nice action sequences)
2) Star Trek: The Motion Picture (very interesting story and impressive visuals)
3) Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (100% fun with a beatiful message)
4) Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (100% trash and fun, just like the old days!)
5) Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (good to see Spock back. Loved the visual)
5) Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (nice plot and a decent farewel)
6) Star Trek: First Contact (almost nice movie, but ruined by the boring TNG guys)
7) Star Trek: Generations (senseless plot and a shameless death for Kirk!)
8) Star Trek: Insurrection (all the politicaly correct giberish made me sick!)
Now the scores:1) Star Trek: The Motion Picture (one of the top ten scores of all times. Pure Jerry's magic)
2) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn (Horner at his best days: writing unoriginal music but with style and strength)
3) Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (the same as the above)
4) Star Trek: First Contact (Jerry helped the movie with a gorgeous new theme and his usual impressive action music)
5) Star Trek: Generations (surprisingly powerful score for a lame movie, with a beautiful theme for the Nexus, cloned by HZimmer on "TPOE")
6) Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (an average score for Jerry, but still very functional and with some genuine inspired moments)
7) Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (very weak score by Rosenman, but works fine with the movie on the comic scenes)
8) Star Trek: Insurrection (burocratic Jerry's score for the worst Trek movie ever made)
5) Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (Eidelman's amateur attempt to re-do Holst's "The Planets" is complete out of place for a Trek movie. The music for the finale is ok, but that's all)
Just my humble opinion, of course...!
